Default nickel finish s&w 48

Hello everyone, I have a model 48 with nickel finish, it is marked on grip frame with the symbol, letter N inside a triangle. Doe's anyone know if that indicates original nickel finish.
Thank you.---sonny

Yep - sure does. If it had a star it would be a refinish

Thank you Ken, the gun was represented as 95% on GB, not even close. I am going to send it to s&w for refinish and may sell it.
Thanks again.---sonny

Do you know how old the M48 is? Is there a "N" anywhere else? Like the rear of the cylinder or on the bottom of the barrel. Just wondering.

It's a rare gun in factory nickel, would like to see the before and after photos after the refinish if you can.

don't send it for re-finish!!

sell it as is, it's worth more in the condition it's in.

factory orginial only happens once.... IMHO

silvertip...revolvers with a factory nickel finish have an N (by itself, not inside anything) stamped on the lower left side of the grip frame. If the mark you are referring to is on the right side of the grip frame that is an inspector's/fitter's mark and does not indicate a factory nickel finish. S&W stamped these marks on the right side of the grip frame (I inside a rectangle, S inside a rectangle, N inside a rectangle, etc.). I believe each mark was specific to a certain inspector/fitter.

Many times, revolvers with a factory nickel finish will also have an N stamped somewhere on the cylinder (possibly under the extractor), but not always.

Doc44, you are right, thjs is not original nickel finish. My other nickel s&w's only have letter N, and a 5" nickel 10-5 doe's not have the N on the rear of cylinder. The most similar s&w is a 6" nickel 1978 mod. 19. I compared the 19 again and found a triangle with the letter M.
Thanks to everyone.---sonny
