What do you think of this 28-2 in Chrome
I think it looks kind of neat. These aren't really collector guns anyway, and this is certainly different.

I like it, and it looks clean. The gold might be a little too pimp for me but I like the chrome. There are enough beat up 28's out there that I would not feel bad at all about tricking one out in such a way.

It looks like someone did a nice polishing and nickel job; just hope it doesn't show up as a "factory original finish" gun in a future online ad

How are the bore, chambers, mechanical function, and how much is the asking price?

When I poured a cup of coffee this morning I had no idea I would be looking at a chrome 28-2 with gold hammer and trigger before 8 AM. I love this place.
I think the value (for me) would be lower because of the chrome but it's certainly one of a kind. If you bought it...would you shoot it?

I like it better than the satin look, for a shooter anyway, for a collector item id rather have it all original of course.

$375. Mechanically it's perfect. It will never be a collector, but I think it's kind of cool.

$375 is more than I would pay for it. I couldn't deal with the gold....but with this finish it would make a decent "boat" gun or one to leave hidden in the car somewhere.

I would jump on it in heartbeat. I prefer hard chrome to blue because it wears well and will still look new 15 years from now.
It would cost around $200 just for the chrome work alone. As for the gold accents. My wife prefers a revolver for self defense. This is model 10 I had made up just for her. She thought the gold trigger was a nice touch.

I'd take it for that price, then sell off the gold stuff and replace them with standard blue, or maybe nickeled to match, trigger and hammer.

Back in the '60s and early '70s, that chrome and gold combination was very common in Houston. Because of the climate, plated finishes were very popular before stainless steel became available.
There was (and for all I know, still is) a company called Ware (sp?) Electroplate that did so many of them that people called them Ware Specials. Back when the Houston Chronicle still accepted firearm classifieds, you would see things like "Hipwr Ware Spl" and everyone knew it was chrome and gold plated.

Guess this explains why some by Ford and other's buy Chevy. No telling what appeals to people. I wouldn't give a similar gun a second glance, even at a bargain price, but I seem to be in the minority. Oh well, enjoy!

I recently bought a hard chromed 3.5 inch 27-2. I put a set of diamond magnas on it and it is my daily carry gun. The hard chrome is almost as shiney as nickle and much more durable. For me it makes a perfect daily carry finish.

I like it. $375 easy.
I could do without the gold, but I like the hard chrome. A satin chrome with a black hammer and trigger would be awesome.

Pimpalicious! :D
At $375, if it shoots, you scored a deal, however it's tricked out. The chrome & gold is a matter of taste, but if it works for you, that's what matters.

I like orphans myself. They're fun to play with.
The almost $400 price for the one you're looking at is a bit steep.
For me ,a guns value is determined by how it shoots.
This model 28 cost me $217. and got chopped and
channeled into a carry gun.
Good luck with your decision, Allen Frame

I'm sitting here with my hard chromed 19-3. For using the finish is hard to beat. Mine had Stainless TT & TH added, not Gold, it looks right. We just came back from 8 days of vacation, it was the gun taken. No finish worries. Buy it and yes, shoot it.

It's always amazed me that guys will pay thousands for custom paint jobs & extra chrome for their Harleys, then decide chroming a gun reduces the value. Go figure.
Personally, I'd love to have that gun. I've never cared what anyone else thinks.

Another opinion
In my neck of the woods, I would buy an N-frame .357 for $375 in a second. The gun looks clean and if it's a good shooter, I'd get it. This gun would be good trade material at some later date, a good start for a custom dream gun, and/or a great self-defense gun. Go for it.

Hello Gmountain
I looked long and hard for a Pre-30 for daily carry and all I could find was super nice ones or ones that had been abused and carried to death, and that appeared to be loose. I came across one that had not been fired much, but looked as though it spent it's entire life under the seat of a Pick-Up truck, with much corrosion on it. It had an owner applied Shake & Bake ugly finish on it, but the price was right of $125.00 so I bought it as the bore & cylinder chamber's appeared to be bright and shinny, and it locked up good and had it's original serial numbered factory grips on it. The next day, I took it to the range and to my delight it shot real tight groups.
After carrying it a couple of months I called Ford's Custom Refinishing in Florida and spoke with Larna the shop owner. I told her I wanted to have the gun refinished as it was tight and shot well, but in it's present condition it was a little embarrassing to carry something as ugly as this, and I felt the gun deserved to look good again, since it functioned fine. I spoke about a nice high Polished nickel finish being applied to it, and once she heard I was going to carry it daily she suggested High Polished hard Chrome, as a better alternative. I asked if I could Prepare it for it's new finish and have worked with them in the past Preparing parts I send them for refinishing as I Like doing it, so she agreed to letting me Prepare it for it's new finish, once she explained how they had to be prepared prior to finishing it.
That was a mistake on my part, as the rust Pit's were very deep and it involved a lot of hand polishing. I made up a Jig to turn the badly pitted cylinder in my battery drill and spent Four nights working on it with different grades of sand paper until it was Pit free and finished up with 1500 Grit 3-M Sand paper. I then sent all the part's to them and they Hard chromed it for me. The Only issue was it came back to me without it's barrel pin. They wanted me to return it to them for it's Barrel pin it was missing, so I Later sent it back down to them.
It now resides in our Daughters night stand as I gave it to her & her husband when they got married a couple of years ago, for home protection. I carried it Four years with no noticeable carry wear. In my opinion, Hard chrome is the only way to go for a daily carry piece. Here it is shown below before, during, and after it was finished. Ford's Re-cut the S&W emblem as well but the other stampings survived rather well...

An N-frame .357 for $375.00? Chrome, gold, blue, whatever, around here, I'd jump on it and I already have a 28!

That is very nice. I do like it but not the gold hammer and trigger. Slap a pair of mother of pear grips on it and it be da bomb yall!! Total pimptastic den my S&W hommies!
For $375 I would have got it too. I paid that for a 28-2 last year that has lots of blue wear and was sporting Pacs. Cool gun!

I would pay that for it. I never met a model 28 that I didn't like. I have owned several over the years but not like this one.

I don't own a model 28 yet.... but when I do a chrome one will NOT be my first. but for a 2nd or later shooting/home gun I may need to soften on this chrome deal.

The only thing I know about a chrome finished gun is based on a Colt Police Positive I saw a few years back that had been chromed. Around the muzzle the chrome was beginning to chip and flake- not sure if this would be the case with all chrome finishes or not
That Colt had an action that was awfully smooth- easy to shoot accurately

That is a very true statement.

Hard chrome, which is what a gun should be finished in, will not do this.

Hell, I'd buy it for that. My only regret would be that it wasn't changed to a round butt before the refinish. Whoever did the work knew what they were doing, looks good.
