Default Model 527 NYSP contract...

There is a Smith& Wesson Model 520, N frame, pinned 4 inch barrel, blued, .357 magnum for sale. It evidently was part of a 3,000 contract for the New York State Police but they were never issued. Sounds pretty good..also looks pretty good. Any feed back is welcome.

Seems that most are found unfired as everyone knew they were instant collectibles. Make sure it has the correct MM stocks. Only the 520 and the 58 used these.

Cool 520 post

A couple of years ago, someone started a M520 post to find how many forum members owned these revolvers.
I my failing memory serves, something over (50) fifty of these revolvers was accounted for.
Two members had five each.

I want one to carry as a hog gun on my land in LA! I wish smith would reissue something to this effect in stainless for morons like me who believe that a fixed sight 4 or 5 inch bbl gun is far better as a using gun than anything with an adjustable rear sight.

I could be wrong, but since the NYSP version of the 520 was ordered without departmental markings on the left frame below the cylinder ("NYSP"), and the fact there were 520s not allocated to that buy, the collect-ability is then enhanced by an accompanying matching box showing NYSP on the end tag. Without a list of serial numbers associated with the refused contract, the practice of forged boxes and tags is a concern for collectors.

One side of my box has a standard hand written label with no indication of NYSP. The other side of the box has a printed label marked "5200014051" and "357 NYSP 4IN".

The gun is unmarked and NIB.

Yeah, but I like the trajectory and power of the .357. I love the .41 mag, but ammo is too high and it's almost the exclusive domain of the handloader (like me). And the .45 ACP isn't much of a hunting round. I need either a .357 or a .44 mag with fixed sights. Make it a tough and depandable hunting gun that way.

I paid $600.00 each for two of them...over five years ago. $600.00 today is a very good price.

Maybe you are aware of guns I am not, but I don't believe that any Model 520's were manufactured or shipped that were NOT a part of the NYSP production run and a normal over-run. They were never a catalog item. I have never heard of or seen a 520 box that wasn't NYSP indicated.

I got mine in February, 1982. I traded a like new, in box, ex-SLCPD Model 39-2 for it. I was into the 9mm all of $85.00, so I did okay. I shot I a few boxes worth before putting it away. I haven't shot it in probably 20 years.

I bet I could get my $85.00 back!

They are great sixguns, but large frame fixed sight .357's (I count the L frame 581 and 681 as 'large') have never been hot enough sellers for S&W to keep them in the line-up. The M-520's, when released through the retail distribution network, took a few years to sell out.

I bet if the new Model 58 "Classic" sells at all, it might encourage S&W to make some more 520's. We have seen the Models 21 and 22 made recently, so S&W can make these again if they want to.

I picked one up in January from Cabella's in Dundee, Michigan. Some blueing wear on the backstrap, otherwise excellent, with the original grips. Came with a unlabeled blue box, no paperwork or tools.

Tag price was $650 as I recall, but I had a coupon for employee purchase price on one item, and a gift card from Christmas, so my end cost was about $525.

I also have a NYSP contract Model 28-2 that does have NYSP on the left side of the frame, under the cylinder. The 520 has no NYSP markings at all.

Endeavor to Persevere

Dave

I bought mine for I think $240 quite a while back, and it has been fired quite a few times now. I bought a 25-2 .45acp cylinder assembly a long time ago to convert it to .45 acp, but thankfully I never found a cheap barrel to complete the project.

Thanks to Red Rover I am now the proud owner of a new to me 520 with the box and papers. I had one before, but Allen-frame (see picture above of that one) managed to "wheedle" me out of it. I've been wanting one back ever since, so now all is cool.

DWFAN, maybe you know, were these guns ever shipped with a tool kit. Since it was a Guvmint contract I haven't seen any with them. Have you?
BTW my serial number is N55852X.

Talking tool kit

Diamondback
They were shipped with a cleaning rod and brush- no instruction manual. Just a couple of advertising pamplets, or at least that is what is in the two boxes that I have. One box matches the gun that is in it.
The other box is a spare that needs the original gun, but talk about looking for a needle in a haystack.the serial number that is on the spare is N560400. Oh well maybe someday;

I bought my 520 for $225 at McBrides in Austin about 12 years ago. I have seen conflicting information on boxes. Some souces say they did not come with a box at all and any boxes are forgeries. I kind of doubt that as they would have needed to put them in something. They would not ship them loose, would they?

I will really make a few folks sick with the other slick top N-frame I have. A M-58, S prefix 98% condition for $165 from a pawn shop about 15 years ago.

Simply not true.
All the real boxes I have seen besides the end label also have a plain white label on the opposite end that says:

5200014031
357 NYSP 4IN

How would someone making fake boxes know to put this on the other label, they wouldn't.
