Model 64 No Dash
I walked into my local gunshop and he had a NIB model 64 no dash with the 4" tapered barrel. Apparently someone bought this Smith in 1970 and just left it in the box. The gun is unfired and even turning the cylinder was at first sluggish due to the old gummy factory lubricant. It has the original box and papers and he wants $485 for it. Do you guys think it's a fair price. I know this is a 40 year old revolver and one of the first Model 64s. I was wondering if there was a collectors market for something like this. The gun is absolutely pristine and unfired. I had him put it away for a couple of days and will give him a firm yes or no after I research it here.

Hi,
The model 64 is a great revolver. But even a unfired one to me would be worth $400 tops. They are not rare. Just a good shooting revolver. With the box and unfired its worth to me about $80 more than a shooter which is worth about $275 to $325.
Maybe someone else has better information.
Regards,

read the string "opinions about the S&W model 10"...the last entry was 07-19-10...maybe you'll get inspired...
I gotta agree w/ Roaddog28 about the price though, but when you're talkin' new in box condition on any S&W you really admire, it's easy to be reckless w/ the wallet...just don't plan on recouping your money anytime soon if you buy it

That is not a common Smith.
Standard barrels are a bit more difficult to find NIB..
HB's are out there.
But, he is about $50 bucks too high.
Minty PC stocks..$35...box/paper/tools $30..$35
Lay down $400 and see what happens...you will likely buy it.
EZ to pack and bring into use..a Smith must have IMHO.

Model 64s with the "Pencil" barrel is very scarce in my part of the world.
They are not multiplying or getting cheaper.

For some reason, I have seen about 6 of the early model 64s come up for sale in the past month, but none in the condition described. I agree it is about a $400 gun NIB, but I doubt you'll miss the extra $85 if the seller insists.

I'm leaning toward buying it, I like the tapered barrel. This thing is so pristine there isn't even a turn line. He has a like condition 2" round butt for the same price, but the 4" really brings back memories of one I owned in the 70s. I'll post some photos if I get it.
Xfuzz, I like your stag grips.

Well I pulled the trigger this afternoon and then got a big surprise. My dealer apparently bought a large collection of S&Ws and was putting them out as he priced them. I really wanted to buy the 4" Model 64 and told a friend who wanted the 2" Model 64. When I told the counter person that if they come across a nice Model 67 to let me know. He said wait a minute and wheels out a cart with several NIB S&Ws amd there was a 67 no dash with the stainless steel sights. I was starting to build a pile now. My friend who is a dealer walks in and buys everything I didn't including 629s, 66s, 63s, 10s and keep in mind these though old are NIB pristine revolvers. I spied a Model 18-4 and added that to my pile. I guess you could say I was at the right place at the right time getting 3 NIB S&Ws, my friend who has more resources ended up with 11. Here are some pics.

The revolver seems to remind you of earlier times. I would buy it if I were you. Paiding $80 or so more wouldn't really make that much difference . I bought a very pristine M13-2 4 inch. I paid probably too much but the revolver reminded of early days in my youth. That makes the extra you pay worth it.
Good luck,

Roaddog, We think alike.
I actually stopped dating American women years ago, they have changed too over the decades and not for the better. My wife (Filipina) a graphic designer I met in Bangkok on New Years eve 2008. She was the polar opposite of what I was use to here so it was love at first sight. One immigration lawyer and a year of paperwork I finally gor her a visa. Got married last year and couldn't be happier. She loves guns and shooting and always goes to the range with me. Here's my favorite retirement picture she took on Mactan Island, Cebu PI that I send to people who ask if I find retirement boring. Besides liking my hobby she enjoys travel as much as I, so next New Years were doing in Hong Kong. Life is good.
