Arkansas State Police 66,need info please
I just acquired a 4 inch pinned and recessed 66-1, serial 72k which dates it right at 1980. It has the Arkansas State Trooper emblem on it. There were only about 200 troopers max back then. Was this a pistol that was issued to them or something that they could purchase separately? Any info on this would be appreciated. It has a red ramp front sight but a plain black rear, serrated trigger,no special features. Thanks for any light you can shed on this

I saw no mention of an Arkansas State Police Commemorative Model in the SCSW - so, would infer that your 66-1 was actually used and identified (roll-stamped?) by the Arkansas State Police. It's in very nice shape and, if anything like my 66-1, will prove an accurate .357 K frame.
Enjoy,
Jerry

Where's Tony when you need him? He's the expert on AR cop guns.
Looks like a commemorative to me. All of the AR cop guns I have seen were not embellished like this one. They were standard production line guns with "Arkansas State Police" engraved on them. I have seen some that were nicely engraved and some that were very crudely done. But never badges and such.
Where HAS Tony been lately?

haris,
That's a standard issue 66 from "back when". There were also Model 60's issued with the same badge emblem on the sideplate. I think Troopers are issued Glocks (or some such) now.
If memory serves, a Trooper retiring could, at the time, buy his carry-gun. I think also, that when the 66's were being phased out they were offered for sale to ASP personnel.
Call Troop L Hdq. and see if there's anyone there anymore that could give you some history.
FWIW :-)

Always remember that many, perhaps even most of the commemoratives back in those days were done outside of the factory, even for some of the largest agencies. Companies like Cake Davis/Davis Company turned them out by the thousands. As S&W didn't actually produce the gun as a commemorative, or didn't do all the work in house, they don't all show up in the SCSW, although some outside produced ones do.

When AR dropped the wheel guns - (and that was a big fight) - they settled on Sig P245s. Not sure if they have stuck with that make and model.

Several years ago, maybe 6 or 8 my agency ordered approximately 10 new Sig P229s .40 S&W and two came in with Arkansas State Police badge markings on the slide. The guns were issued out, but were wanted by more that just the two officers who got them. I don't know if firearms section or admin checked into why or how we received the two guns, but they were interesting conversation pieces.

Yes, that style ASP M66 is not a commemorative but was actually issued to and carried by Arkansas State Police troopers. And the above poster is correct, the ASP CID personnel carried identically engraved M60s (those are really hard to find now).
The ASP then transitioned to Sigs (P229 .40 SW) with the ASP logo lazer etched on the top of the slide.
The present ASP issue is Glocks (with ASP logo markings).

Well, I slouch corrected. I had no idea the ASP carried such fancy revolvers.
Whoda thunk it?

No problem.
About 4 years ago we transitioned to Sig P226 DAK's and P229 DAK's and both officers had the opportunity to buy their ASP marked 229's. I don't remember if they did or not, but if they did, it's a good possibility they still have them. I don't know if they would part with them.
