Default Value of Model 36 Chiefs Special .38 2"

I have posted the Model 36 for sale and a little unsure of what would be the value of the weapon. I purchased it as an off duty weapon in 1977 ( I think). I have no paperwork or box. The weapon has less than 200 rounds with slight blemishes on the grip and no other blemishes. The bluing looks to be very good.

It does NOT contain a dash ( not sure what the significance is) in the serial number however is preceded by a J which I am assuming is the J frame with a square butt.

If someone can set me straight on the perceived value I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Seems like it could bring 300-375.......From your description I would call it very good to excellent.........Depending on your area and to whom you sell it.......I would think a dealer would give you roughly half the retail.....You might try consignment if they dont charge much more than 20%... I picked up a 60 something for 265 but it was fair to good.....it shoots great. Im not an expert and would love to hear what they have to say about price

It should go for somewhere between $300 and $400.

.38 Special J frames are largely considered more useful than collectible.

And, square butts are generally considered a little less useful than round butts (due to fewer after market grip options and the relative "difficulty" in concealing their slightly larger grip profile).

Thus, a round butt will usually bring more money and move quicker than a square butt. A round butt, as described, would bring $375-$400 without much trouble. A square butt, as described, might take a while to move at $325-$350.

Here's my track on the Model 36:

Smith & Wesson 36 Revolver in .38 Spl. Bluebook of Gun Values (31st Edition) indicates between $380 in 95% condition and $590 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 43 recorded prices for this model gun from $284 to $595 over a period of 2 Yrs 5 Mos ending July 7, 2010. The average price as of that date was $387. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights all represented as 95% or better, no distinction for import location or engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $822.

Here's how the data charts out. Note that the Average Used Price as of July trended at about $420. Better examples would command higher prices, especially with box, papers, tools, etc., this is a faily short track but the price trend seems pretty clear. Those little J's are becoming increasingly popular.
