41 conversion
Has anyone ever converted a 41magnum to a 44 magnum or 44 special? seems to me it would be simple, a barrel and cylinder change, but I might be wrong?

I am sure it could be done but would be far from simple. The cylinder would need to be fitted and the barrel probably turned to achieve the proper setback. 41 mags are much less common than 44 mags so I see no benefit of turning a harder to find gun into a more common one not to mention the cost involved.

A couple of years ago I saw at a Tulsa gun show, at Model 58 that'd had a Model 29 barrel and cylinder installed, resulting in a fixed-sight .44 Magnum. The guy liked heavy barrel, fixed sight guns. It was priced at $700 and I would've paid that for it, but I had just bought one each of the new M-21 and M-22 revolvers and couldn't talk myself into it. Should've.

converting .41 Magnum to .44 Magnum
I've been involved in rebarreling and re-cylindering an M657 with M629 barrel and cylinder.
By great luck (coincidence?), the timing, headspace, and b-c gap came out correct, and the end result was a good-shooting .44 Magnum with minimum expenditure of spare parts and cash. The conversion parts came out of a police confiscation sale from a gun show for about $100.

I had a gunsmith friend of mine that wanted a fixed sighted 44 mag and since I had two model 58s. One became a said gun with a 4" tapered bbl and sight ground down and the other had a adj sight model 29 frame with a 41 mag cylinder and a heavy bbl with beefed up front post. This was done in San Antonio around early 90s. That one 58/29 always shoot 100fps slower over the crony then my other 4" .41s.

My question is,"Why?". 44's can be had easily, the .41's bring a premium price.

To me it would be better to find someone to trade the .41 to for the .44. That way you get a nice .44 mag and a somewhat hard to find and more valuble .41 mag remains. That being said if you have the right project Mod 57 or 58 that is very well used and have the right parts it should be doable.

If you have a fixed sight .44 mag available to trade, let me know.
I'll round up another .41 mag to trade you for it.

Well does anyone of you fellows still have the 41 mag cylinder from your conversion? I have a 57 with a bad cylinder. Would love to pick up a good cylinder to get it back operational.

On a similiar subject...I want to have a M629 8-3/8" 44 mag rebored to 45 Colt and end up with a 45 Colt Magnum.

You can always have a .357 bored out to a .44 Special.

M58 converted to .44 mag
I'm pretty sure Hamilton Bowen adresses this topic in his book, recommending the 58 as the only good candidate for a fixed sight .44 mag conversion.

They turn up on the auction sites now and then. If you don't mind a two tone look, there's a non-fluted stainless cylinder on GB right now for 91 bucks.

I think you'll just end up with a 625 .45 Colt. It won't be a gun you can shoot lots of hot ammo through if that's what you're looking for.
