Default Any cops use trigger shoes on their duty guns?

Just wondering if "back in the day" if anyone who was a LEO or knows of any who used trigger shoes on their duty revolvers. I saw a Model 10-5 recently that the gun shop owner says was brought in by a retired cop and it had a Tyler trigger shoe on it, I kinda like trigger shoes and was just curious if any were used on guns that were carried on duty.

If I bought one that didn't have a target (wide) trigger, I put a trigger shoe on it. I still have several of them equipped that way. I also have several of them in my parts box in case I need them later.

I was the chief firearms instructor for my department's 400 armed personnel my last 6 years before retiring. I covered everything from training and qualification in the academy to training the SWAT team. I seriously discouraged any use of trigger shoes. They can loosen and jam up the trigger action, maybe at the worst possible time. There have also been a few cases where a trigger shoe that was a bit wider than the trigger guard caused an un-intentional discharge when the gun was holstered in a tight fitting holster that covered the trigger guard.

I always recommended, if you had to have a wider trigger, have a factory version installed by a competent gunsmith.

While I don't know it's history, a few months ago I picked up a mid-50's, K38 "Heavy" Combat Masterpiece (4" Barrel) that had a well made trigger shoe on it that looked to have been on there awhile.........

I did remove the shoe and was glad to see absolutely no marring whatsoever to the trigger itself.

Thanks for the info, very interesting. People seem to either love or hate the trigger shoes, and they have pretty much fell out of use except for wheelgun junkies like us I guess

I tend to shoot well in both DA and SA on my revolvers that have trigger shoes, it just helps me get a more even stroke on the trigger.

I only use trigger shoes on some older S&W's, where it would be "period" to the gun. I've also bought a few revolvers that look like the shoe had been on there since Nixon was in office.

I like them, on certain revolvers. It's an easy and removable way to add an instant target trigger to a revolver. If it weren't on already I wouldn't put one on a minty Smith wheelgun, they tend to put set screw marks on the triggers. But most of my 80's and before "shooter grade" S&W's wear them, and even some of my Rugers.

I bought a Model 34 made in 1962 that came with a trigger shoe on it. I shot about 100 rounds with the shoe on and then took it off and shot another 100 rounds without it. I have left it off my pistol and when I removed it, no marks were left by the set screw.

When I started, I bought a 19 it was a standard trigger and hammer. I was fine with that...but the gun guys at the academy suggested a trigger shoe...it came off when I stared working...the Sheriff would not allow Trigger shoes...he had seen one come off during a qualification, so it was a non issue...not allowed...then I transitioned into a Semi-Auto

When I was a LEO back in the late 70's my department had a regulation against trigger shoes on duty guns. The department had a S&W trained armorer and if I remember correctly he would swap out triggers on S&W revolvers for free. He also did real decent action jobs.

Dave T is correct.

A Trigger Shoe should never be used on ANY holster gun or ANY gun, that you life might depend on...

They were banned on my Dept. as well.

I did not even use them on my Target revolvers.

Some people did use them on their Bullseye 1911's.

They were strongly discouraged by a lot of instructors by the mid-70s. In addition to that S&W recommended that the built-in trigger stops on K frame target sighted guns be removed at about the same time. Apparently it was thought that the mounting screw could loosen and allow the little stop to shift and prevent full backward travel of the trigger. I still have a few of them that I took out way back when.

I'm not fond of anything that could concievably balk the gun. I have a very smooth GP-100 with the trigger drilled and tapped for an overtravel set screw that has never moved. It's not a defense gun-- it's too heavy. But as great as the DA pull is, the screw still bothers me a little.

A guy at the range a while back told me he drilled two little divots in his trigger to keep the set screws on the trigger shoe from slipping on the revolvers he used for PPC.

I like trigger shoes for my range guns, but the Model 64 and Ruger GP100 I use for HD and CCW do not wear trigger shoes. I figure if I have to use those guns for anything serious I want as little "clutter" on the gun as possible. Trigger shoes help to shrink my groups at the range but would be irrelevant in a defense scenario.

These days if you mention "trigger shoes" 99% of shooters will just give you a blank stare and then be like "what's a trigger shoe". I think they are pretty much dead as far as widespread use. T-Grips however are making a comeback due to increasing use of revolvers for CCW.

Chic Gaylord, the holster maker, mentioned that he advised one NYPD cop to get a trigger shoe. No one else who knows guns has ever suggested them, to my knowledge, at least not in a serious defense gun.

I had one on a Colt 1917 years ago, but removed it when it worked a little loose. I was also afraid that the trigger would rust under it.

A trigger shoe on a duty/defense weapon? There are many reasons why not, but the single one that it BOLTS/SCREWS onto the weapon is good enough. Something that is stuck on by set screws can come unscrewed, and jam things up. Not to mention having something that is wider than the trigger guard is a really bad idea.

Several years ago I bought a used 4" Colt Python that had one on it. From the wear on the bluing and grips my guess is it may have been a cop gun from the 1970s-80s. The first thing I did when I got home was take that thing off. Depending on the holster, those things are a good way to shoot yourself in the leg. They usually hang outside the trigger guard and when put in the holster, sometimes they will catch on the holster and trip the trigger. Not a good idea for a carry gun. They may be fine for any gun that does not see the inside of a holster.

So if modern cops get "Glock leg" (because we know cops always shoot themselves with Glocks, right?), then cops in the 70s must had had "shoe leg"

I would think if you carried the revolver in a Jordan style holster or something with the trigger exposed, there would be no problem with a trigger shoe.

I like the Flaig Ace trigger shoes, because they are steel, they fit better than Tylers and they were made in the same state I live in here in PA

I have split a couple Tyler aluminum shoes trying to snug them on.With the Ace steel shoes I wrench those set screws on there and the shoe isn't going anywhere.

Back in the day, some of our officers used trigger shoes, but then we got the new fangled holster that helps with retention, so the bad guy is not supposed to be able to take your gun away. Anyhoo, one of our officers decided to keep the trigger shoe on his gun, and one morning, while in the report room, he removed his gun, and then attempted to re-holster it. Well, the trigger shoe caught both sides of the holster as he was jamming the gun into it, and it went kaboom, and he shot himself in the leg. No trigger shoes were allowed after that incident.

I never saw a trigger shoe on another LEO's revolver. I personally felt that anything that might cause failure was not needed. I thought a tricked out target shooting gun might have a shoe or trigger stop but not my duty gun.

Semi-retired rent-a-cop.... I put a no-name trigger shoe and no-name T-Grip on a 4" M10HB used for soft clothes and concealment. Never a problem with either. I bought the gun about 1968, and carried it for about six years. It's still in the safe - I took it to my CHL class when that became necessary. Still shoots fine....

The shoe did NOT extend wider than the trigger guard, and was on solidly. IMHO, it's hard to AD a DA revolver that way unless you're not paying attention - especially with an IWB holster. Seems like my duty holster was stiff enough that anything could happen, but that gun didn't have a shoe. (6" S&W M19 Combat Magnum. Did I mention that I'm kinda big? )

I saw a few of them around here - nobody ever reported a problem.

Funny thing - I had problems with my P3AT "biting" my chubby fingers and put KelTec's shoe on it. Trashed the trigger.... It took me several years to get that thing to the point that it would finish a magazine before something croaked.

I prefer NOT to put a true target trigger or hammer on a carry gun. Just an IMHO....

Regards,

I have a several revolvers which have trigger shoes on them. They have been on the revolvers since the late 60's. Never had any issues with them and the holsters used with them. I think it is all up to the folks who use the guns. The never came loose and I liked them.

Our shop was located in the building adjacent to the NYCPD Equipment section ( Company store).
We sold trigger shoes to those who insisted, but advised against them for service use as they could interfere with holsters, and sometimes come loose. The departement hadn't banned them, but advised against their use.
We installed Genuine Factory wider triggers on K and J frame revolvers with no labor charge to the officers. ( Used to buy the triggers 25 at a time).

Back when revolvers were the norm.. The overtravel tab on M-19 & M-66's were also removed.

Nope, I don't recall seeing trigger shoes back in the late 70's.
Trigger shoes were widely regarded as unsafe for duty guns as long as I can remember. I don't know anyone who thought they were a good idea

So here is a question-

I have a 5 screw K-38 from 1955 that was my father's and a 5 screw K-22 from 1956 that I purchased. Both have trigger shoes that have been on since they were new and both are used for range use only. Would you remove the trigger shoes?

Redmond:

If you're carrying them, or likely to stuff one in to a holster, I would at least look at the width of the shoe, and how it's installed, as well as the nature of the holster.

Otherwise, the only reason to remove them would be the hazard of timed fire exercises if the thing decided to hang you up, or potential problems with a "range holster"....

These things were a way to put a "target" trigger on a gun without significant expense, and without any real effort to remove. The problem is that the dumb thing can come loose and lock up the gun temporarily, or snag on the holster and AD. "Target" triggers run an equal risk of snagging, IMHO, but likely won't come apart ....

The trigger stop issues, btw, (and not applicable to Redmond's question) were the subject of a recall some decades back. I left my M19 alone after checking it. Since I wasn't carrying either K-frame by then, it really didn't matter.

So, Redmond, if you're not carrying these, or don't have holstering issues, I wouldn't worry about it.

Regards,

That is the real issue: the holster used. Back in the 1970's many LEO holsters had open triggers and there was nothing for the trigger shoe to hang up on. But, when you mix genertions, and start using a vintage trigger shoe with a modern holster with molded trigger cover, that's where the problem can develop. Look at the holsters below and notice how the vintage one on left would provide no problem for a trigger shoe, but the two more modern ones on the right would.

I used a Tyler trigger shoe on a Model 60 on the job in the 1970's and also had one on a Model 15. The one on the M15 got loose, I went to tighten it with the provided allen wrench, and the trigger shoe split. I swore off them at that time.

Have bought several revolvers with trigger shoes. Took them off right away. Still have a little box of them somewhere. Never saw any LEO's use them on duty guns.

A long time ago my father-in-law acquired a Model 28 from a CA LEO and it had (and still does) a trigger shoe. Once it was given to my husband I quickly snatched-it-up for my blued revolver collection and to tell you the truth, I didn't notice the trigger shoe for a while (I was pretty new to collecting then.) It doesn't bother me a bit. That said; I am a purist and would rather the gun stayed as original as possible.

All of our issued Model 15s came with target hammers, target triggers, and trigger stops (one of our Lieutenants was a dedicated PPC shooter). About 1978-79, S&W sent out the safety notice about the trigger stops, and our S&W trained armorer removed them. At first, we were issued Don Hume Jordan holsters, which were not a problem with the target hammers, however, we had to special order thumb break holsters from Don Hume when we converted to them due to the length of the target hammer spur.

If you put a trigger sock on first then the trigger shoe they won't work loose if you lace it up tight.

Question

Speaking of trigger shoes, are any old-timers here familiar with these?

I found these in a parts lot I picked up awhile ago. They're solid bronze and have slot, rather than Allen, screws. Matching them up to Flaig/Ace models I have on hand, the smaller one seems to most closely fit small-frame Colt revolvers while the larger fits K & N frames. Both are obviously from the same maker, one marked "A. Tarr" (this is the only marking at all on either, no size numbers are present). The only thing I've been able to find via Google on "A. Tarr" is there was an Allison Tarr of Verona, PA who was a sportsman/competitive shooter from the 1930s-1950s(?). Considering Flaig/Ace was also in PA, I wonder if there's any connection, as these seem to be very similar, design-wise, to Flaig's product.

Texas Star[post # 13 above] mentions Chic Gaylord recommending trigger shoes. He also recommened grips or grip adapters to "fit the gun to the shooter". Jim Cirillo, famous NYPD Stakeout Squad gunfighter also recommended Custom grips, grip adapters and trigger shoes.
While my gun fighting experiences in the military, Military Police and Criminal Investigator plus some time augmenting the US Secret Service do not amount to a "hill of beans" in those guys arenas [No gunfights with the USSS other than extensive training]. I came to the conclusion that trigger shoes are an accident waiting to happen.I am a big fan of custom grips that fit my hands[they're on the medium to smallish size # 9 gloves] and I found many years ago from Elmer Keith that the "magna grip" was way better on a 4".44 Mag.than over sized chunks of expensive fire wood for control of the "buckin'.44". I also found that a grip adapter was a great help.I couldn't afford ivory grips with a carved steerhead on the palm side to stabilize the grip that Elmer prefered.
Many people with more experience than I have in gunfighting recommend a grooved trigger, I have found, for me, that the smooth middle sized trigger that S&W has is the ticket for me on S&Ws.
I have no "large graveyards" behind me but I have had my share of "serious social intercourse" turn ugly and I am still here.
Thank God and good training,Nick

I bought a nice model 60 stainless Chief not long ago & it had an Ace trigger shoe on it. It was very nicely made & fit very well on the trigger, but was very definitely wider than the trigger guard. I didn't like it-- for DA shooting, I prefer the standard .240" trigger with the serrations polished off and the sharp edges & corners rounded off. A wide trigger shoe might be great for deliberate single-action shooting, but I don't do much of that with my j-frames- they're meant for "serious social work" and I practice with them accordingly.

I was ruined early on... I started with a colt trooper which had a wide/smooth trigger. when I started to buy smiths, I would take the aluminum shoe and sand the sides till I had a tapered shoe getting close to the colt size. we had the stories of a holster actuating the trigger so I had the shoe smaller than the guard. mostly to simulate the colt trigger but the side benefit was no trouble with re-holster. I did a browning hi power, smith 19, a remington 22 rifle. I cleaned the bhp, a carry gun, enough that the shoe was kept tight. no need anymore, smith came up with a wide, smooth trigger in the '70's. they’re on the 29, the 17 and something close on the 686. still have the shoe on the remington 22. the trigger pull "feels" lighter because of the wide surface. I'm a bit older and maybe a bit wiser so I wouldn't use them now. except the rifle. hadn't had trouble in over 35 years on the 22. have to find the small hex key so I can fully disassemble for cleaning though.

When I was in charge of the weapons at the Fairbanks Correctional Center in the Nineties, we used model 19s. Other than grips, NO after-market changes were allowed. That included "trigger jobs", trigger shoes, or reduced strength springs. It was simply an acknowlegement of the likely civil liabilities in the event that deadly force was used on a prisoner. A clever attorney could easily make a jury believe that a trigger shoe resulted in a "hair trigger", which, in turn, displayed an eagerness to kill. There's no way to make a trigger shoe look good to a jury.
On the other hand, personally, I like trigger shoes. All of my revolvers have them. That's the difference between on-duty and off-duty.

In the dark ages, before the internet, IPSC, and Glocks, many police officers had trigger shoes on their revolvers. It was part of the aftermarket trinkets that came from PPC and 2700 shooting which was the standard of the period. In many ways the "tactical" **** seen today reminds me of trigger shoes, hip grips, and grip adapters.

NRA LEO Instructor 22 years. Trigger shoes will get you dead. If they loosen up and slide down your service weapon becomes a paperweight. They did feel nice on the range though.
