17-2 5" bbl? Common or scarce? UPDATE: Brought it home. PICS
Found a 17-2 locally 5" bbl according to the owner. Going to
see it in person tommorow. Anyone know if the 5" is a common configuration or hard to find? I've heard the model 15 in 5" was a special run but search didn't turn up anything on the 17. It may be that the seller doesn't know how to measure a revolver bbl. Won't know until tommorow. thanks guys!
Update: it was a 6" Nice S&W holster came with it.
It's got a really nice trigger shoe, stamped "17". I ran half a box of federal bulk pack thru it yesterday and it shoots EXCELLENT.
I was not dissapointed. Everyone who shot it yesterday was hitting the steel easily at 30yds.
Anywho, for $400 with the holster and period correct trigger shoe I feel like I got a good deal.
SN: K56319x dates it to 1964.

The Standard catalog of S&W says that some were made and that they are rare. I have no clue how rare they are but the book says that they are rare.

I am sure there may be a very small handful of 5 inch K-22's out there, but I have never seen one or a photo of one. Many folks mistakenly measure a revolver barrel from the front of the frame to the muzzle, instead of from the front face of the cylinder to the muzzle. My guess is, that is what is happening here.
A 5 inch K-22 sure would be cool, though! Take something to measure with.

10-4! Now I'm excited! It was listed on Craigslist for about 12 hrs so I was lucky to see it. Hopefully it really is a 5".
I've got a 17-5 4" so this will be my second model 17 if it's in the condition the seller states.

Ever had a gun you wish you had kept? I had an original all factory blue 17-3 "5" that had a red ramp front sight, white outline rear sight,.500 target hammer and .500 target trigger with smooth Rosewood service grips, which I sold about 15 years ago. Yes they did make them, and somewhere out there is my old gun.

"If it's in the condition the seller states".....Condition???
If it's a FIVE inch gun...BUY IT ..... pure and simple. Even if simply to resell to a collector here.

Yep. lots of them. Gun Trading is a disease that renders poor folks incompetent on their next gun purchase when they find themselves short of cash. I now have 2 kinds of guns, keepers and traders.

I didn't know Craigslist allowed the posting of firearms, here in CT it is prohibited. That's probably a good thing as far as my bank account is concerned...

You did well.
Grips are later- a 1964 gun would have diamond grips.Rimfires have a frame mounted fp.It's the centerfire guns which initially had a hammer mounted pin, later redesigned for a frame mounted pin.

That is a perfectly standard 6", not 5". Whoever measured it doesn't know how to do it, they measured from front of frame, not face of cylinder.
