Which would you find most desirable?
Would would you find most desirable a Model 29-2 with a 4" barrel or Model 19-3 2.5" barrel. Lets assume both guns are equally in good shape. The model 29 does not have the original box, tools, etc and the model 19 comes with original box, tools etc.

I vote for the 19 because I have no use for a .44 anything.

I'd grab the 29 because it is much more versatile and I'm a big Model 29 fan! A lot would depend on what you want to use it for.

The 29-2 4 inch .44 magnum. They just look right and 44 specials are a hoot out of them.

Most definitely the Model 29-2. Nothing comes close to S&W N-frame.

The 4" barreled M29-2. Opposite of Grog, I have no use for a relatively heavy short barreled .357 Magnum.
If value and pricing are a consideration, it is a stretch for the M19 to come within $100 of what the M29 will bring.

I would get the 19 because I have the 4" M29 already and the M29 snub is next on my list.

A 4" 29-2 or a 357 snub? Are you serious? You can have the 19 and i'll
take the 29.

If the choice was between a 29-2 and a 28-2 with 4 inch barrel I could go either way but between a K frame and N frame I'd buy the N frame every time.

Go with the 29 if you can handle the frame size and learn to shoot it with Specials. Great gun!

I once owned a Model 29 and I sold it in a moment of madness. I've never forgiven myself. I already have a Model 19 which will never leave my stable. The answer to the question would have to depend upon your needs. If you want a revolver for carry and concealment the Model 19 is your baby. The Model 29 serves other purposes such as for camping in wilderness areas or hunting. Either gun you choose is a winner.

I prefer 357 mag over 44 mag, so I would go with the Mod 19. I like N frames a lot, but I take my N frames in 357. Either way you will be happy, both are great guns, maybe you can get a buy 1 get one half price deal

Considering I already have a 2 1/2" 66 I would take the 29-2. The 4" 29 would be a good match for a Jordan Border Patrol holster I have for my 28-2.

In 1974, when I started on the job there were two (2) must have pistols every young hot-dog cop had to have… the M-39 and a M-19 2 ½”. As much as I appreciate all things N frame, nostalgia would win out for me. So go with the M-19.

BOTH! No question about it. They are different guns for different purposes and you NEED both of them. Lots depends on where you live and what your going to use them for but, that's a choice only you can make. I probably wouldn't want to walk down Broadway in any major city with the 44 strapped on my hip. That's what the smaller K-frame is for. On the other hand, a hike in the woods almost requires the 44. Good grief man....... get them both!

I like the 4" 29, because I don't have one.Come to think of it I don't have a 2 1/2" 19 either. Well never mine.

I would take the 29 and try to figure out a way to get that nice 19 too. They are both at the top of the desirable want to own list.

Not sure whether Snowbandit's or deanodog's reply is best, but you can't go wrong with either's advice. Certainly get the 29 - you can pick up the 19 or its functional equivalent for intended purposes (maybe even a 2" Model 15) any time.
That's for practical use. For collecting a representative sample of S&W's finest, same advice. Get the 4" M29 first, but get both.
BTW, what did you really expect to hear on THIS forum? Of course you should buy both.

I have owned two model 66 2 1/2 revolvers over the past 30 plus years, one that I won in a shooting event. I sold both for the simple reason that a 357 magnum round in a short barrel has far too much muzzle blast for the modest performance gain you get over even a 38 plus P. And, in reality, it doesn't carry that much better than an N frame in a similar barrel length. Both realistically require leather as neither are 'pocket' pistols. So, I much prefer an N in any caliber that begins with a 4, over a short barrel 357. Better yet, I prefer my 'L' framed 696 over either, but that is for another thread.
That being said, do not pass on the 29 four inch! It is arguably the most versatile revolver ever to leave the Smith factory.

Because I have small hands I'd rather have the 19.
Especially seeing it has the original box, tolls etc.

Well, I've already bought my wife a gun, so I would choose the 29. N frames hold value and are the better all around guns. I like the 19, but if it were one or the other, really there is no discussion.

If we played password, and you gave me clues of "S&W" and "desire", I would say, "Model 29!"
But then, I have chronic N-Frame lust.

Exact opposite for me, although both are about as classic as a Smith can get.

If I was looking solely for defense/concealment, I'd take 19, 2.5 due to a smaller diameter, lighter weight and still plenty of good loads to choose from.
If I wanted an all around gun, I'd take the 29 4" due to better sight picture, more power for a hunting/woods carry and you can still use it for defense if you don't mind concealing or the weight of an N frame.

From a standpoint of shooting and future value, the 29-2 wins hands down. If you're looking for a carry revolver, then choose the 19.

A friend of mine had a 629 4" that i fel in love with.
So much that i got me a 629 4" mountaingun my self.
Huge dissapointment, i should have got me a regular 29 instead.
Sold it after not shoting it for a long time.
Better balance in the 29.
Unfortunatly my arthritis wont allow me to shoot big boomer any more.
But you can't go wrong with either the 29 or the 19, go with your heart.
I still have my 19-2 2-1/2" though.
