Default Model 64 Heavy Tapered Barrel

How rare is a 4" heavy tapered 64?
I have seen one locally and don't know much about them. Box is blue wire reinforced marked M&P Model 64

I have never heard of a "heavy" tapered barrel. When first introduced in 1970, the Model 64 included a standard tapered barrel (same profile as the Model 10-5 tapered barrel). The 4 inch Model 64s introduced a standard "heavy" barrel in 1972 (similar to the Model 10-6 barrel). The 4 inch tapered barrel was discontinued in 1973.

The 4 inch tapered barrel Model 64s are desirable and are becoming collectible.

Hope this helps.

Steve

It's in between the two. Starts heavy and then tapers. I will see if I can get a pic of it.

I would love to see a tapered HB 64.

You never know, I have a Ruger Service Six with a very rare Machined Heavy Barrel, no one knew what the heck I was talking about until I posted a pic of it, it was something no one had ever seen before. It was a run of them for a PD who requested this barrel. Like Ruger did with the MHB, maybe S&W cranked out a batch of some different type of tapered heavy barrel for a special "batch" or something.

Sure would like to see a photo. It may well be a special order, have you contacted Smith & Wesson?

Yes, we can't evaluate this possible rarity without a pic to look at!

Guys,

Maybe it's just the lighting in his pics, but it looks like the top 64 in Chuck Jones pics has a much heavier tapered barrel than the bottom one. The underlug looks different as does the area around the front sight.

Oh jeez! I think it was just the lighting that makes 'em look different, but now I'll have to find them and check. Now where'd I put 'em....

I have not seen anything in between the tapered and heavy barrel 64, but with S & W anything is possible. If you compare older and newer 3" model 10s and 36s the former definitely have a lighter barrel contour - there's a thread on this with photos somewhere on the Forum.

It's an illusion; the barrels on those two 64s are identical.
