Diamond Targets
When did S&W stop the Diamond targets? I recently bought a new-to-me N frame that was wearing them, but fear that they are not appropriate to the year of the gun....anyone know what years they were being produced?
Thanks.
BTW...these are 'non-relieved' Diamond Targets for a N frame.

They stopped in late '67 to early '68, though I know some shipped out later than that. On top of that they were offered as an accessory for a while so someone may have had a few sets sitting around that were NOS that sold at a much later date.

1970 or so...
The ship date for this N frame would have been around 1970-71 (as far as I know).... maybe they were correct for the era....I though they might have been discontinued earlier than that though...like 1961-63, but I am frequently proved wrong.
Thanks....I guess that I shouldn't pull them off and sell them.

They stopped using the unrelieved diamond targets in the mid-1950's.

Then they are at least 15 years too early for my new toy...

I missed the fact that yu said they were non relieved dimaon targets in your OP. My bad, or I would have tld youwhen they were available.
Those are nice ones! They are from the mid-'50's though, and no where near the '70's time frame.

Maybe another pre-27
Maybe I can find a decent pre-27 to mount those grips on...what else was being produced in the mid 50's that makes a great all-around ranch gun?

If the right inside stock panel has a stamped number, someone can probably tell you the year the gun that had them was shipped; however, the vast majority of these were not numbered to the gun.

I would think a 4" Highway Patrolman or Heavy Duty. Anything else would be collectible in any condition or very expensive, or both.

I have a first year HP that my grandfather carried...I can't bring myself to carry it around though....it has the original factory magnas that are numbered to the gun....I was perusing the ultimate HP thread and noticed that it has one of the lowest numbers of all the ones reported by the members here. I may just have to take some photos of it and post them in that thread...maybe I can find another first year HP and stick these grips on it.....that sounds kind of backwards doesn't it? Buy the grips first, then the gun

If you haven't already, please do!! Since it is one of the lowest numbers it would be great if you posted the first part of it too.

Early 1955 Targets came with non relieved diamond targets, as well as magnas and relieved targets.

probably going to let them go...
I have been looking around at prices on the 38/44 heavy duties and other 1950-1955 era N frames and I just can't bear to have that much in a shooter....I guess that I need to send these grips along to someone who needs them for a period correct gun....any ideas as to their value?
I know, I know....pictures would help....I will try and post some later today.
Thanks guys!

It's a shame that there is so much damage to the butt and the front strap corner Scott. I'll bet they were on some Sherriff's old service revolver - appeared to be used as a hammer... probably to hang a "Wanted" poster
I'd say about 30-40% of SRT's estimated value.
Member "DWFAN" could restore those to look original.

I had figured on keeping them and buying a 38/44 or some period correct N frame to put them on, but the prices (and my darling wife) just aren't cooperating...If I had a really nice piece I would keep them and get him to restore them to 'like new', but things just aren't working out in my favor this month.
I had thought that they might have been from a LE background, but I am used to seeing one side or the other of a duty gun worn more than the other....maybe the good sheriff was like Andy Taylor and his gun laid in the desk most days and saw most of it's duty hanging posters at the USPS
