Got my first Highway Patrolman!
I've been jonesin' for a model 28 for a little while now...for some reason they've just appealed to me. Well, today I got one. I had a rifle listed for sale or trade on our local trader and a guy offered me his 28-2 and I jumped. It's in very nice shape and really doesn't look like it's been shot a whole lot. It could use a good "going over" but it's still sharp to me. I really like the satin finish, and I love the looks of the magna's on it (although I'm not sure how well they'll shoot for me). According to "the book" it dates 1978-1980.

Welcome to the club!
Congratulations. Nice piece. Now, how about a range report? Got mine last week and an unplanned trip delayed getting to the range. Tomorrow is the day!

I had a nice 4 screw Model 28 with diamond magnas, that I sold when I ran out of money one summer. It was in excellent condition.

Good looking gun.
I carried one like it as a baby cop. I figured out pretty early that carrying that monster around while running, fighting, etc., wasn't a lot of fun, but I don't think the crooks I pointed my K frames at were ever quite as impressed as they were with the big gun.

you're not kidding! Last night I was reading the Ultimate Highway Patrolman thread and decided I've got to have a 4" to keep this one company!

Excellent score! Congratulations. There is just nothing like a huge revolver that has an all-business, no-glitz appearance to it. No matter how many "show" guns one has, there always needs to be a no-nonsense work gun. And you have one of the best.
My HP is an early six-incher. I think I need to keep an eye out for a four-inch model, too.

Congratulations are in order! I've got a 6" from 1974 with Magnas. Got to love the sometimes unappreciated Brute!
I agree. A four inch would be nice!!

I got to shoot it today, and I like!!! At first I didn't think that me and the magna's were going to get along, until I found that they are awesome for one-handed shooting. This one is definitely a keeper

Great buy! I just acquired a 6" 28-2 about 2 weeks ago. Mine came equipped with Pachmayrs. Not the prettiest setup but I abandoned all thought of changing the grips after one trip to the range. The gun handled 158gr. and 125gr. Magnums as if they were .38 wadcutters. I love my 28, it's the perfect companion to my 27 4".

I got my first Highway Patrolman while I was stationed at Wheelus Field in Lybia in 1962. I shot the heck out of it every Saterday at the base range. I'm amazed that I didn't blow it up, those were my reloading days when hotter and faster were my goals. Sadly the next year when the M-19s arrived I sold it for the smaller pistol. I did'nt get to replace it until I picked up a new in the box 5 screw in the 80s. You'll love the Patrolman because they shoot well and never seem to wear out.

This 4-screw Model 28 (no dash) dates from about 1959.
It has one of the best trigger pulls of any Smith in my safe. A delight to shoot DA, even with full power magnums.
