My call woud be 1200 (tops) if 100% gun, and same cond case.
1000 easily the norm.
The linked to gun you saw was a lucky catch!
Deals like that are NOT the norm!

I know there are very knowledgeable folks on this forum who can give an approximate value on todays market....That is what i am asking.
Thanks anyway.

I agree with a $900-1000 range; as with many other guns shorter barrels seem to be bringing more.

At that price one might as well make a shoot of one..right?
Shouldn't loose that much value.
Strange that most any 1911 clone will bring $1,000. and these nice older collectable Smith's just kind of get stuck in that range. I think they are a good buy and will increase in value. I may be wrong but I just like them..a lot!

Not so. Sellers on auction sites want the moon for these things, partly because of places like this that specialize* and drive up demand, and because lately any gun that was ever made out of steel and wood looks like a Colt SAA to these people. Can't tell you how many 'rare' 8 3/8 29s with 'custom' (Ajax) grips I've seen in the last few years.
* Through most of the eighties and nineties, a clean 28-2 was $200, and that was all you got -- the 28-2, probably wearing Grippers. Enter specialty gun forums. Now it's common to see listings for $700 28-2s that say "Sorry, no box." Where did they get the idea that the box was important? Us.

I routinely see asking prices of $800-$1,000. I don't know if they actually sell for that much. My friend and I agreed that the gun was likely worth about $800 and I offered $150 less on the premise that A) I was saving him the trouble of advertising it, B) I was saving him the selling fee on an auction site, C) I was saving him the consignment percentage from a local shop, D) we're friends and always give each other discounts.
He has expressed a desire for a rifle I decided to sell so I will send it to him and he can pay me what he thinks it's worth. It's only money.
I still think a super clean 4" 29-2 is worth about $800. Sellers (and buyers with more money than I) will disagree.
Good luck.

I don't know the value. That is why I was asking. I do remember seeing at least one where the asking price was just under $1,500. ... unfired for the works. I am supprised that they are only $800.-$1,000.
I know you can find nice used ones without the box for $700.- $800. asking price. That is why I thought unfired in box would bring much more.

It might. And certainly sellers can and will ask more. But asking price is not always selling price. I have no doubt some people will pay $1500 for a NIB 29-2. The question is, are the guns so rare that someone willing to pay $800 can't get one?

One of this era in original condition brings $100-150 or so. The plastic liners crack easily and the blue flocking falls off, but a Forum member rehabs these at a reasonable price. Other, earlier versions go for much more depending on the type.

Paid $750 for this 6" nickel a few weeks ago and bought it through one of the "overpriced" auction sites. Not NIB but hard to find any flaws. Seems prices are all over the place. Local shop has the same gun in the same condition and asking $1150. Of course it's still sitting there......

That is just awesome beautiful. I am glad they can be found for those prices although not unfired in box, a great firearm to own, appreciate and shoot. Seems like a good thing for Smith lovers as much lower grade guns sell for as much or more than some of these older classics (or some nearly classics).
