It's a no dash model with no letters in front of the serial number.

Bush Dog,

First, let me welcome you to the S&W Forum . . . there are great folks here willing to share their passion and vast knowledge of Smith & Wessons.

With regard to your model 60, I'm not aware of any model 60 with just a 5-digit serial number. Is it possible the 343XX number you provided is located the yoke/crane of the gun? If so, it is an assembly number and not associated with the serial number which is found on the butt.

S&W began making the model 60 in 1965 and numbered in the Chief Special serial number range. The first ones were 401754 to 401792. In 1969 they added a letter R prefix and started with R001.

Sounds like 1984. Someone will be along to correct me if I'm wrong.

Hey, nothing to forgive. The beauty of this forum is we're all here to learn. Even the most knowledgeable ones among us learn from the Q&As such as yours . . . that's how they got so smart!

Misty, as usual, is right on the date. I can only add that the three alpha plus 4 numeric serial number format began in the early 1980's and remains today.

Enjoy that model 60 . . . they're pretty special revolvers to many of us.

I am new to this forum, but not to S&W, my first was and still is a mod 17, six inch barrel. Very accurate and now very collectable. To add to this conversation regarding the Smith mod. 60 another great gun, what year roughly was serial number ANT18XX from? This one has no barrel pin and reading from many posts here, this indicates that it is a newer model after 1982 when the pins stopped being inserted. I am enjoying reading many of the posts here in the forum. Nice site. Thanks.

ANT18XX was probably shipped in late 1986. Hope this helps.
