Default 1968 Model 27-2 w 5" barrel...PICS!

I recently added this fine model 27-2 to my collection. Built in 1968, serial no. S311xxx with a 5" barrel and non diamond walnut service grips that are numbered to the gun.

The blue box marked "Smith & Wesson, of Bangor Punta, Springfield, Mass." has the solid silver border on the lid and a white construction label on one end as well as printed gun information on the other end as shown in the picture.

The gun came with the original heavy waxed brown vapor wrap, 3 documents, the correct owners manual, NRA membership card and the full warranty registration card. Also included was a period correct hollow ground sight tool / screwdriver. I am missing the correct cleaning rod, brush and swab.

The action is just incredible and the high polish bright blue truly reminds me why I love Smith & Wesson revolvers.

Awesome - I would be hard-pressed to shoot that beauty. The 27 is my favorite although I have only a 6" - would like to pick up a 4" although that 5" looks perfect.

Nice pictures too - do you know that your camera is set for the year "2002"?

Great looking revolver. I like the 5 inch barrels the best. I have never had one but may someday.

That is a beauty! I have it's slightly older (numerically) brother S2978XX. This one shipped in March of '68. It is an excellent shooter too. The streaks are the rust preventative I use- Birchwood Casey's Sheath.

Not as pretty as Bob's or Tim's Mod 27's, but here's one from the mid '60's with that great 5 inch barrel...

.. I just can't let a Mod 27 post pass without jumpin' in!

The 5" M/27-2 was the finest modern day .357 that S&W ever made, I have owned a couple. I now own two 5" pre 27 5 screws, one is completely original and the other has been converted to .44 Special by Hamilton Bowen. It is in my opinion the ultimate .44 Special that S&W never made.

I agree with Skeeter on the five inch barrel length. Perfect balance, you have a sweet piece there.

Every time I see a Mod 27 thread I want to own all the guns shown. The 5" Mod 27 is my favorite all time S&W.

I've never understood why S&W didn't make 5" barrels a standard production item on early 57s and 29s as well.... and include the checkered top strap and rib on all N frames..

I love the 5" 27"s I've got two of them and when I learn how to take pictures like you I will post them. I have a 27-3 4" nickel that I bought last year and when I go to the range it's on my hip. I'm courting a 6" gun from 1969 with the box and tools. The trigger and hammer has been changed to the target versions. The originals are in the box as well as all the paperwork and tools.

I love the 5-inch 27, and I have to clean the drool off the keyboard after seeing the OP's.

My book say's 1964-1965 range. In the condition as seen here I would say between $675-$800 range. I can't check the gun for timing, end play cut on the top strap above the forcing cone so I'm giving you a pretty big range. The last one I bought was $ 650 two years ago its about 98% very slight turn line. with original presentation case loaded.

j: I'm down to three 5" M27-2s. I had to pay $650 to $850 for them depending on condition and extras.
