Pretty much the standard abbreviation for cartridge, if there is such a thing as a standard.

Not a stupid question. These acronyms drive me nuts. I was reading a post on another forum today in which the poster said that his gun worked best with LSWCHP ammunition. It took me 15 minutes to figure out what that meant.

And another 10 who "know" but are wrong!

My thing is Model #s. Half the time I have to Google to find out what caliber it is...

Ah yes... the alphabet soup of bullet types. FMJTC had me going for awhile: Full Metal Jacket Truncated Cone.

Truncated cone? I've always known that as a flat point

A post on another gun forum referred to "shorter coal". I had to read through the whole dang thing to figure out he was talking about lighter powder charges. Good grief!

Dave,

coal doesn't refer to lighter powder charges, and if that's what someone claimed they are loopy. That's the standard acronym for cartridge overall length as measured in inches. It has nothing to do with lighter powder charges, with the exception that sometimes a shorter c.o.a.l. required to fit a certain chamber may require less powder to allow for the bullet to be seated deeper, which makes the c.o.a.l. shorter
