No pictures, unfortunately...But I used two different Ruger 4" DA .357s from 1981 until retirement in 1994; putting literally cases of factory 125grain Magnums through both and replacing the barrels. To say that I trust them and have a soft spot for them would be an understatement.

This isn't my original duty weapon but is set up like the one I bought for the academy and carried for my first 9 months, to the end of my probationary first year. Once I was off probation I qualified with a MKIV Series 70 and carried one form or another of 1911 until I retired.

My duty gun was a 28-2 which I carried with the Magna stocks and a grip adapter. This is a more collectible/desirable Model 28 (no dash). This one happens to have the best DA trigger of any N-frame in my safe.

USAF 1982-85 with one similar to this:

1986 bought this while in the academy and carried it:

Until I switched over to this one:

Then we went to autos issued by the agency. Still carry a .38 snub as a backup though.

These are like the ones I carried before we were issued Sig 226's.

This is similar to my lst issued revolver in 1972: Model 10 HB

Similar to the 2nd revolver we were issued: Model 66, 4 inch, with my original Jordan Trooper stocks, which I also had on my Model 10.

Similar to the gun I issued myself when I was in the DB: Model 66 2 1/2 inch

One of my backup guns: Colt Det. Special

The only revolver I was ever issued was a Model 10-5 when I was a Army helicopter pilot flying UH-1Hs. I only carried it about 2.5 years, then on to the Beretta 92. I just recently added a Model 10-5 to my small collection, looks exactly like my old Army friend.

My 19-4 It wore Hogue Mono-Grip when it was in the holster.

This gun took me through the academy and my 1st two years on the job...till the Sheriff forced me to go to a Semi-Auto...I was the last road officer to carry a wheelgun for that agency...

I kept it clean and cold blue touched up...I always wanted it looking dark and gleaming.

Question Bat Guano. What two Ruger 4 inch 357s were you carrying? Did the Rugers split the forcing cone like the M19s did with heavy use of 125grain Magnums? I have not seen any Rugers that had to have their barrels replace. I have a Ruger Police Six 4 inch barrel service type revolver and it has seen many magnum rounds. Still locks up like a bank vault with no visable wear on the forcing cone. Well used but still shoots.

Today's laugh, this is what I carry on my rent-a-cop job! Before I get lambasted for both being a rent-a-cop and carrying a Taurus, I am going to the PA Municipal Police academy in a few months, and I am just doing security work to get by because I just got out of the Army and couldn't find anything else I don't want to carry one of my "good" S&W's and risk getting it wet out in the rain or bashing the grips around on door jambs.

To redeem myself, I carried this on occasion when it was warm and sunny out. My security company grudgingly allowed me to carry a revolver, it had to be a .38 Special. Their license to provide armed services expires soon, so if I am still there this winter I will go back to unarmed "Paul Blart" status.

I carried this M25-5 (with Hogue grips) back in the early 1980s. I round butted it myself, as the RB fits my hand better.

I carried this M27 converted to .44 Special in the late 1970s. Back then, it had a 6 1/2" barrel. When I had the gun converted, it was supposed to be cut to 5", but the gunsmith either didn't read the work order or he forgot. I was a young, poor deputy and I didn't want to wait any longer.

My two guns I was lucky enough to buy when I retired. Both no-dash 66's.

Very nice guns, from everyone!

LEO's just don't get to carry cool guns anymore, in 10 or 20 years when guys are showing off the "old Glocks" they carried it won't be nearly as cool.

I carried a personally purchased Model 66 as my belt gun and a department issued 2" Smith as a backup. The 66 was stolen from my mother's home many years ago and the little Smith had to be left behind when I left the department. As an aside, the little Smith appeared to be really old, even back in 1982, and it sported a three digit serial number, "429". It shot well though.

Stan, that S&W you showed looks like a Model 64 (by the trigger & hammer finish). You are aware that stainless steel holds up pretty well in the elements (even sweat!). So there's really no need to be seen in public with a Taurus. (Sorry Stan, just some good natured ribbing...I loved that Kevin James flick too, so I figure you must have a good sense of humor.)

We still had the Colt .45 1911 A1 when I was an MP in Uncle Sam's Army from Feb '83 to Feb '86. I then did private security in California for 18 months with a 4 inch Model 65, and as it turned out that's the same model TDC had when I came to the Texas prisons as a guard in 1987. I work in admin now & my own Model 65 is in a friend's safe (sold it in a moment of weakness - but have since replaced it w/ a very clean Model 66). So, sorry guys, no pics.

Great thread!

I'm not a cop, and have never been one, but I too, over the years have worked as a security guard, both armed and unarmed. Even now I'm working at a private campground as unarmed security. I carry a radio, a note pad, and a flashlight.

Back in the day, I worked for Burns Security. I don't even know if they're still around or not. I had a tin badge, a whistle on a lanyard, a billy stick, and a Colt Official Police 38 with black Pachmayer type grips. I was issued six rounds of 158 gr round nose lead bullets, a Sam Brown belt, and a border patrol holster to go with it. My training consisted of a little booklet called "Your Revolver" or something like that, and the instructions (basically) "Don't shoot yourself or anyone else if you don't have to." I never even fired that old Colt. I wish I had it now, I remember it having a really nice trigger, but I admit I probably wouldn't have known a bad trigger from a good one back then.

Anyway, this isn't the one I carried, but I'm pretty sure someone carried it a lot of miles on duty somewhere.

I used to have a Taurus like the one pictured above. It was a good, solid, revolver. With wadcutters, all I ever shot out of it I guess, that thing would just cut the center out of a B-27. I wouldn't have hesitated to carry it.

I was one of the 'NEW' jacks that was issued the 9mm.
However, I was the the first of the last Two classess, in 1997, to be trained on the 5 shot Off-duty. The S&W or the Ruger.

I chose the S&W 640 Centenial .38 and had one with no dash. I carried it, until I dropped it down a flight of concrete stairs which ruined the gun. I was so mad, because the gun wasn't made anymore. Not like that!

Then I found out that a local dealer, who also is a distributor, had the entire cache from the factory, and was sitting on them, still New in the Box.

I went to see him, and ended up with two! Brand new 640-2, .38s built on the new magnum J/E frame, and couldn't be happier. They were made in 1997, when I was in the PA.

Not my pic, but a great one of the revolver.

I carried this 19-3 for a week in 1973 - on the day shift - just so I could say that I had carried a revolver. [Otherwise carried 39/59 and 1911 .45's.] Pattern loading was popular then. First 2 rounds were 110 gr. Super Vel; next 4 were W-W 158 LSW.

roaddog28--The guns in question were a Service Six and a Security Six. The barrels didn't crack out or anything, just eroded until the spitting got to me. I had a Ruger armorer's ticket, and between that discount and shipping through USPS the cost to get the guns overhauled was minimal. As a matter of fact they replaced the barrel and refinished one of them for free.

They're still a favorite of mine. The S&Ws are more refined, but those old "Sixes" are real workhorses.

The issue guns today are pretty soul-less IMHO. Sort of like giving samurai polymer and aluminum swords and telling them "they're just as good".

Hi:
This "Old Antique" has been with me for many, many years. She started Patrol as a Model 28-2 .357 and after 10 years was converted to .45acp.
She has accompanied me down many a dark alley, empty buildings, and long, lonely highways. She is still good and dependable. Three years ago I installed a new mainspring and mainspring tension screw.
Even when I had to qualify with a "Bottom Feeder" I also qualified with "Her".

Reference Steve 02C5 wanting to know how many have fired their weapon on duty, it will be interesting to see the number and nature of responses that he receives. Personally speaking, not many folks who have had to drop the hammer on someone feel obliged to talk about it.

For pwhphd:

The revolver pictured is a 66-1, When I got the revolver I traded rear sights with a friend who had a 67 with the unfinished stainless rear sight assembly. I added a white outline blade. The stocks are Hogue nylon from early 1979 when the Hogue's first hit the market.

The holster is a Bucheimer-Clark "Deputy".

No pics, but when I went on the Wash.,D.C. PD in 1960 I was issued a Colt commando revolver .38 special. Goverment surplus given to the Dept. after WW2..Had that revolver until I retired in 1982..As you all know it was a version of the official police. The dept. went to the Glock 17 in the early 80s.......

love these old classic used guns- keep the pics coming! the only time I was ever issued a revolver was during my brief stint in the A.F. when we qualified with smith model 15's- only time I ever saw the gun was during that one qual in a three year time frame-was not in a position that would typically require being armed. My Army time saw me shouldering various m16's or a Beretta 92.

It's nice of -791 to have started this thread. My bits follow.

I carried the Model 15 while on missile combat crew during The Bad Old Days, serving with the 740SMS/91SMW at Minot from '79 through '83 and a few command posts in Europe and CONUS after that. I recently obtained a Model 15-2 which is appropriate for the period that the USAF M-15s were produced.

My current service revolver is a Model 21 Thunder Ranch Special with modified front sight and some nice grips from Hogue. My company permits us to carry anything within reason so I settled on the .44. I'm proud to say that the blue is long-gone from the cylinder face and the muzzle has the slightest hint of finish wear.

The contracts to which I'm assigned are low to moderate tension, so I haven't felt the need for a belt-fed weapon.

I also have a couple of pet Model 66s if I feel the need to go "light". The 66-6 is especially useful in dim conditions with the tritium sights I've installed.

Smile Duty Revolvers

I used a number of revolvers from 1976 until 1982 (I went to a Colt Gold Cup 1911 .45 ACP in 1982); however, I only have photos of 2 of them.
I used a S & W Model 25-2 .45 ACP 6 1/2" revolver as a duty handgun from 1976 to 1980 at a City PD. I used a S & W Model 60 2" and a S & W Model 66 .357 magnum as a BUG or Off Duty Handgun.

In 1980, I went to work for a Sheriff's Department that would only let us carry .357 magnum revolvers. I had Bill Davis make me up a custom S & W Model 19 with a Python 6" Barrel installed (Smolt or Smython) which I carried for the 2 years I stayed with the Sheriff's Department. I used the same S & W Model 60 2" and a S & W Model 66 2 1/2" as a BUG and Off Duty Handguns. Here are the photos of the Smolt .357 and the Model 25-2 .45 ACP. I carried both duty handguns in Hoyt breakfront holsters.

Revolvers have never really left me. I continue to have the S & W Model 60 2" and a S & W Model 642 2" that continue to be carried from time to time as BUG or Off Duty handguns.....

I carried in this order thru my 30 so years as a LEO, Model 10HB, Model 19 Nickle, Model 66. We then went to semi autos and I carried a Sig 226, and a Ruger P90.

Have numberous O.D. guns, such as a Colt Det. Spec., S&W Model 37, Sig 239.

Sold some of them. Still have the Model 37 and Sig 239, as well as Sig 226, and Ruger P90.

Son who is a LEO also, has my 226 and I think carries it as a O.D., as he carries a FN FNP .45 on duty.

Sorry no photos

I carried model 15's a 66 and something in an L frame till we went GLOCK. The Glock didn't have the romance or beauty of a good old wheel gun but boy it made you feel more comfortable in the hood, two mags for the gun fight and a third to get you the hell out of Dodge. I never had a ftf with the Glock can't say the same for a model 15 I carried in the Air Force years ago.

Roaddog28-love those Ruger Police Service Sixes. Basically, a very tough gun. Setup similar to a Smith (where hand is, cylinder rotation). Had a couple of adj. sight Rugers but got rid of them to fund Smiths. Found out I had no .357 Ruger. Damn!! Had to fix that. Don't think I will ever need a BUG OUT gun but this and a Marlin .357 would do nicely. :

Don't know why Ruger did away with the Security/Service Six line but they are very serviceable guns. The newer GP100 guns are very solid and rugged (maybe a little over-engineered) but I've always had a Security or Service Six in the stable because they are solid, reliable firearms. Ruger could have coated them in camo for the outdoors group, pink for the gals and touted them as being more "green" than semiautos . Can reload the brass multiple times to minimize the "carbon footprint"! Also more retro than the IL stuff and tupperware guns of today. Ruger could start a "back to basics" movement. Just a thought. By the way, if I could find a RB Ruger Service Six snubbie, I'd snap it up in heartbeat. I can find S&W snubbies by the score but not Service or Security Six snubbies!
