Round butt Model 10
I'm not sure how many of these 4" round butt Model 10's were made, but I haven't seen too many of them.
I found it while roaming the gunshops this afternoon and couldn't turn it down for $265 out the door.

I have one in nickle. I was told the model 10 was one of the most widely used models aver made. Very popular for LE.

Smitty,
If that 10 is as mechanically sound as it looks, you make a good deal. A round butt, 4" pencil barrel model 10 is as good as life gets.

It locks up like it did on day one and doesn't have enough end shake to feel.

Nice score! I saw what I believe was an NYPD officer carrying one of these in the old-school JayPee-style open top duty holster during a visit to the city a few years back. It definitely wasn't my imagination although I realize this was probably not a regulation NYPD sidearm in 2003.
Can any current or former NYPD officers shed any light on this?

I'm not NYPD but older officers are allowed to carry the M10's if they choose, but new officers cannot choose the M10 or M64 any longer.
The number of revolvers carried by NYPD officers is dwindling every day as the older guys retire.
One of the best things S&W ever did was make the round butt standard on the more recent L and K frame revolvers, I love that grip profile.
My 2003 production 64-7 with the older Magna grips, love it! The MIM and IL doesn't stop it from feeling and shooting like a classic.
I have wanted a 4" pencil barrel with .RB bad, they are hard to locate! For now this will do....

I have had mine about fifteen years, $120.00 used. It sat in a shop for nearly two years, I was the only guy who ever looked at it so the shop owner sold it to me for what he gave for it. I swapped a .22 L.R. Astra Constable for the SB HB #10.

They are not frequently seen these days. In the early 1970's the 4" RB was standard issue for new Treasury agents, but I'm sure those guns never hit the market. You got a great price on a great gun.

I bought mine a couple of years ago. Mine doesn't have a lot of blue left, but there is no pitting and mechanically it is very sound. You stole that one! A square butt model in 95% condition would cost you about a hundred more around these parts.

Very nice find. Good price too. Back in the early 80's I saw several female MPs in the Marine Corps armed with Rb 4" Model 10s.

I had a RB Model 10 with a skinny barrel that had MPDC (Metro D.C.) on the backstrap. It was finish worn, but shot POA/POI.

The round butt model 10 4" was US Army issue for years, often for aircrew and female personnel who might have difficulty with the M1911A1. I assume those guns have all been destroyed by now.

Anyone now who really wants a RB 4" Model 10 can just order one brand new, get a 10-14 and add RB magna's.......sure it's not the "same" as the nice older ones, but it's still a Smith and they still shoot pretty darn well.

Does it have that goofy lock? (yes)
Does it have a forged hammer and trigger? (no)
Can you buy them for $265? (no)

My issue revolver as an Army Aviator was a RB M10, it was blued not parked. I later had the USAF armorer at Ubon do an action job on it, never should have turned it in. Later on I acquired one just like S. Kelly, also marked MPDC, it was built in 1960 and it still had the old skinny sights, but shot very well, still got it.

Wow! I have often wished for a round butt skinny barrel Model 10 but have never seen one and did not think they existed other than as an older M&P.
That is a really nice looking gun and a great deal. I did have a heavy barrel RB Model 10 at one time but got tight and sold it.

anyone have more info on U.S. military issue m&p or model 10's that were not victories? I see things here and there on this site regarding them-do we have any ideas how many and what variants were purchased by the military and how they might be marked? As I recall the Smiths I saw in miltary service (1984-2009) were all square butt.

I have no details other than personal experience. I had a Model 10 issued to me (all of them 10-5's) in four different AV units. All our 10's were, taper 4", Round Butt, commercial blue, no military markings, nothing special about them (no lanyard loop, etc) at all. 100% commercial off-the-shelf. They were all fairly well worn in the finish department, as you can imagine. I never saw any square butt Model 10's, they were all RB. This was from 1985 to 1990.
We also had 4" Ruger Service-six with lanyard loop. They were round butt as well. Yeah, I know that should be a Speed-Six, but the frames were indeed marked "Service-Six". There was a "US" marking on the frame as well. Nothing else military specific, just "US" stamped on there.
I always had a choice, and I went with the S&W. It was lighter, and the trigger was better. While I am a big fan of the "-six" Ruger myself, I'm a bigger fan of the K-frame.
I was in the 1st Cav at FT Hood (493rd/F-227, E-227, HHC CAB) and B-3/501st ROK and it was the same in all those units. Choice of Ruger or Smith & Wesson. We had more than enough in any of the arms rooms to pick either model. After that I was at Campbell, and we had brand new M9's.
I know some of the dog handlers had revolvers as well. The idea being they could operate it with one hand easier, as they controlled the dog with the other. Female MPs were rumored to have them as well, but all the female MP's and some of the dog handlers I saw either had M1911A1s or later M9's. What the Army says how it's supposed to be , and how it really ends up being was often two different things.
We didn't shoot them much. I wasn't too impressed with the USGI .38 Special ammo. It was basically the same as WWB FMJ. All of my S&W's would have done the job though. They shot decent, and they were all actually in pretty good mechanical shape because we just carried them around. Massive finish wear, but they probably lasted forever.
I know the military had over 100,000 .38 revolvers of all makes, shapes and sizes before it finally bought the M9. They were bought in different batches as needed, by each service separately. So the variations are likely endless.
We had "Dirty Harry" shoulder holsters that didn't have any retention other than the steel spring and it was pretty obvious that in any kind of aircraft crash you'd loose the weapon. Most people wrapped the lanyard around it to retain the revolver because you certainly didn't want to loose one out in the field. Since the Model 10 didn't have lanyard loop, you had to do something with the stupid leash anyway. The Survival vest had a holster sewn onto it. I've seen leather ones, but all ours were nylon. We also had leather hip holsters that were typical GI design with the wire belt hanger. None of them were all that great. All were worn out ten times over. I used the shoulder holster usually because it was easier to sit at a desk or vehicle and simple enough to just swap over to the survival vest if I was flying. I used the hip holster only for parades, etc. where we had to use them.
I don't have any other info that I could say was factual. You have to figure that the way they bought and issued those things, there was no real "that's the one way it was" with .38's in the military.

I like that model 10. The older diamond grips are in good shape. One can not have too many model 10's.

Great guns, this was my first issued revolver in 1968. It was several years old when I got it and can attest to the fact that it worked fine when needed.

All of the Hong Kong and Aussie M-10's I've seen have been square butt. The New South Wales guns from Oz have three-inch barrels. Alas, they destroyed a BUNCH of them.
I do very much want a round butt std. bbl. M-10. Wish they'd made them in M-64 form.
The rounded butt wears coat linings less and is a bit easier to conceal. Add a Tyler adapter or maybe Uncle Mike's grips (if you can still find any) and you're good to go.
In the USAF in the 1960's, the only M&P or Victory guns I saw were sq. butt. Never really saw a M&P/M-10; just Victories, supplementing M-15's until there were enough of those later Combat Masterpieces. We did have a few Colt Official Police and Commando guns. Those older .38's were rumored to have come from the Navy. Some of the Victories were so marked.

And some of the aren't too bad:
Sure it has the dreaded MIM hammer and trigger, and guess what?
It shoots just as well as the older ones do.

You better get yourself a good lawyer and turn yourself in cause you stole that one! The grips alone are close to what you paid for it. Nice score!

I have seen one, and only one, M-64 with 4" tapered barrel with round butt. That was at a gunshow in FL about 15 years ago. I was too poor at the time to buy it, or I would have.
So they did make them, but that was the only one I've seen. If I see another, and have the cash, I'm buying it.
I definately want to get a blue 4" tapered RB, since I carried one in the Army for several years.

Here is my "custom" Model 64 round butt tapered barrel. I sent the gun and a used barrel to Smith & Wesson and they installed the barrel for me.
I really like it!

I have a M10-8 4“ RB. A fast action & tight lockup. I’ve weened a number of shooters on it & am not surprised by those who have come to appreciate its hidden merits lost by the plastic fantastic crowd

I don't have the honor of owning a Model 10 RB. The closest I have come is a Model 65-8.

Great buy ! My brother was issued an identical round butt standard barrel M10 as his first duty weapon as an MPDC officer in 1968 -- Washington D.C.
My M10-11 round butt is pictured. The action is smooth as butter and it has a purty grip !

I have a Model 10-5, skinny barrel round butt, and a Model 12 in the same configuration. One to shoot, one to carry. We had some in inventory at the US Marshal's Office in the 1970s. The US Marshals had a pretty open firearms policy then. I carried one of the service owned Model 10, round butts for a while, had some nice Herretts grips made for it. Saved my pennies and bought a Model 38 for BUG. Then saved again and got a Model 66, 2.5 inch. The 66 and 19 were the most common carry gun at our office with SuperVel 38 rounds so the short ejection rod would clear them out for sure.
Late in the 1970s, the Model 39s and 59s started showing up as personally owned service or BUG guns.

I bid on a round butt standard barrel Model 10 on gunbroker a few days ago, but let it get away. I'm wishing I bid more, as I've decided I need to have one of these.
How difficult is it to find a standard barrel M10 with round butt?
Were they actually a standard production item in the U.S. or were they all imports? The one I bid on recently had an import stamp.
ETA: I already own a standard barrel M64 with square butt, a heavy barrel M10, a 2" M10 RB and 3" M10 & M64 with RB. What I want is standard taper, 4" with round butt . . .

Can any current or former NYPD officers shed any light on this?

The last Mode 10 was issued to the NYPD in 1988. 4” heavy barrel with square butt Model 10-8. It was replaced by the Model 64 DAO. I know 3” 64’s were offered and they were round butt. Don’t recall a 3” Model 10.
I’m a gun guy obviously and noticed guns when I was still on the job. Don’t believe I ever saw a round butt Model 10.

Here's my model 10-5. My father purchased it from a MA State Trooper back in the mid sixties.

My dad carried the round butt from 1957 -1981 on NYPD. You could always tell the old timers by the wear on the outer grip. My Dad's was smooth.

Round butt . . .
The ROUND BUTT M10 with a 4" Standard Taper barrel seems to be a fairly uncommon configuration. Anybody know what years those were made?
