Default Smith and Wesson model 49 3"

Hello I would appreciate any and all help I have a smith 49 3" barrel and it looks like a brushed nickle finish on the gun I sent for letter from jinks it says gun was made in 1977 left factory with 3" barrel and in nickle finish does not mention if it is is a polished nickle or matte the trigger and hammer appear to be flash chromed. the only desire i have is to find out if it is trhe original finish or somebody polished it.

That is the finish it should have left the factory with.
Enjoy your rare 3" Mod 49!

JD, I am sorry I have to amend my answer! Something didn't seem right so I checked.
According to SCSW 3rd edition, nickel finish Mod 49s were bright nickel until 1993 when the finish was changed to a matte nickel, so if this one is 1977 the finish has been altered.

Again, sorry the fast and innacurate reply.
And, welcome to the S&Wforum.

That's interesting. I guess it's possible but if Mr. Jinks replied and didn't mention it, I think that lessens the chances it came with a special order matte finish.
On the other hand, the finish does look good enough to be factory. If it was matted after the factory it's no "bubba" job.

I have what I have always called a Chrome Model 49. I carried it quite a bit and the finish is not that nice. Yours does look like its brushed. I bought mine NIB in May 1977. I had a choice of a blue one or the chrome, I chose the chrome one because it was a different finish than any of my other guns.

I thought all Smith revolvers had case hardened hammers and triggers?
I have a model 49 1 7/8 inch barrel that is factory nickel and has just a plain N on the grip frame as well as under the star wheel. It is a 1967 and shoots like a damn!!
