Model 53 questions / value
I recently received a Smith and Wesson Model 53 with a 6" barrel, with all six inserts, the extra barrel all the paper work still in the box. How rare are these and what is the value of one? I also got 2 full boxes of Remington 22 Jet ammo with it, how much is the ammo worth? Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum bucks33!
Do you mean the extra cylinder? Shouldn't have come with an extra barrel unless it was swapped out.
I see the factory Remington Jet ammo sell in the $50 range.
How about some pictures?

they started making those in 1961 & stopped in '72 or so...only made about 15,000 (slightly less according to SCSW)...it was the last "magnum" round S&W was directly involved with in regards to creation & providing the first revolvers for the cartridge, but it had certain failings and it never really caught on...the biggest problem is the cartidges would slide back as they fired unless the chambers were bone dry (no oil residue) and this caused the cylinder to lock up (NOT GOOD)...plus, I've read the velocities never really produced as promise...
Still, for many years it was a coveted piece for collectors...but, I have no idea what it would bring today but would guess close to $1200 due to condition & all the goodies...

That is a nice piece---where you have the extra cylinder--
install it and leave the JET cylinder in the box. Also,I
wouldn't shoot a lot of the factory JET ammo because the
round is so hot it WILL erode your barrel forcing cone very
rapidly. If you shoot rimfires it will last forever and maintain
it's accuracy. Just my 2 cents. Pete

I wasn't going to shoot any ammo out of it. I may end up selling it, haven't really decided yet.

don't know if you are aware of it, but the grips tell us that the gun is from the early 60's, making it more desirable than the ones w/o the diamonds around the screw...in other words, more valuable - at least $100 I would guess...
any price experts around to give this gentleman an estimated total value? (I guessed $1200, but I don't make the shows & never really kept up w/ the Model 53 - I just happened to be doing some research on it recently because a lesser example became available to me & I passed on it.)

I purchased a similar one off of GB about a year ago for $1050. Did you get the red warning hang tag? The red tag and the tapered mop are hard to find.

Yes, there is a red tag with a warning about the high pressure ammunition. It also has the Nox-Rust paper, the parts list / instruction manual, and the other half of the registration card.

I saw one today at a gunshow in Utah that had all the inserts but not an extra cylinder. It also had the older diamond targets. Serial number is K439210. Was being offered on a table with no other Smiths for a great price. Told them I would call them later this week and try and work out a deal, but now I am not so sure. If anyone is really interested then let me know and maybe I can help you acquire it if I ultimately decide to pass. It comes with a box of remington jet ammo with about 1/4 of them already emptied. Just thought I would share. Oh, condition is perfect. No box.

Thanks for all the info. Does anyone else have an estimated price for this gun with the 2 full boxes of ammo? I also received a couple other smith and wesson guns from my grandfather. I also received a Mod-29 4 screw with a 8 3/8" barrel, a 29-2 with nickel and 8 3/8" barrel and a model 66-2 with a 2 1/2" barrel still in the box.

I'm sure they'll be some people wanting to know about the 4 screw model 29 with some pictures. That is probably to most collectable fo the models you have listed.

Yeah, I figured that, I will start a new thread in the pre 1961 section. Does anyone else have any info for the value of the model 53?

in the depressed market of today, think 1200 is about it. looks like nice gun. ammo 50-75 depending who wants. couple of yrs ago this outfit may have brought close to 1500 to the right person. might in the future. if you don't need the money, why sell guns from your grandfather? you will regret it in the future. your mileage may vary.

Around here the ammo will sell for $85 to 100 per box. The gun with the extra cylinder( I am assuming the cylinder is numbered to the gun) and the inserts would bring $1500 easy, and if it were mine I wouldn't take less than $1800 for what You have.

I totally agree with you. I see the guns with 22 cylinders NIB for around $1,800 at gun shows. Early guns with all the papers are very desirable.I paid $69 online a couple years ago for a factory box of ammo that still had its original price tag on it of $12.35.
At the time, I paid $1,000 for the 8" M53-2 NIB. No spare cylinder, although I am still looking. Big Larry

Recently saw a very high condition 53 but with no second cylinder, box, papers, etc, tagged for $950 in a LGS that is known for coming down about 15-20% if you really haggle, so I'd guess for yours in that kind of shape with the ammo 1100-1400, depending on where/who/when. Retail of course, not what a dealer or pawnbroker would offer.

On mine, I have the inserts, I have the extra cylinder, the jamming up rarely happens, the problem is the barrel coning. There seems to be three level's of M-53's , mint hardly shot with no coning, shot and coned, and those that have machined back barrels for removing coning. Barrel on mine is coned, have a 8 3/8 N.O.S. barrel to be fitted on, but then won't shoot it . Have another spare barrel that's been cut way back many times would need ejector shortened to use it. Plan for now is to enjoy shooting the coned gun as long as it doesn't hurt the front of the Jet cylinder????? Even knowing these problems would still buy this gun and glad to have mine. At the range booths get a kick out of the expressions when they think it's just another K- frame then see the Jet Rounds being loaded!
