Default Smith 48 Help me understand

So i was watching this auction and after watching what is advertised as a 48-2 sell for almost 2k i began scrutinizing the pics .And something that bothers me is it doesnt have diamond grips 48-2 was produced from 62-67 and the diamond grip wasnt deletted till 68 how is this possible it shipped without diamonds?S&W Model 48 22 Magnum PINNED RECESSED EARLY LNIB : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

Very possible the grips were changed out at some time in its life - not unheard of at all.

I understand the possibility but looking at the rest of the gun and its condition i see no reason someone would change from diamond magnas to non diamond i cant see disliking that little diamond enough. i just searched gun broker and found another 48-2 and he claims it was mfg in 74 im confused by this cause again it sold for good money . i would think if something was hokey they wouldnt bring crazy money

I'm going with the SN on the box 6Kxxxxx is not in the 1960s. More like a 1970s SN thus grips correct. Also, that long barrel is not often found on the Model 48. Nice ! IMHO, well wroth the price.

Maybe it's the way I'm wording it . When did the 48-2 go into production and when did the 48-3 start

I think the dates you have are correct, but the changeover could be somewhat fluid. If S&W had a frame stamped 48-2 in 1970 they weren't going to discard or re-mark it, out it went.

I don't remember the model 48 being a big seller back then.

S&W also will produce a batch of guns several years later. It is not uncommon for S&W to locate some batch of barrels, for an unusual caliber or length, and put them into a frame (remember the frames fit numerous calibers), and produce something out of sync. I recently purchased a 431PD (that were discontinued in 2005) which Roy tells me shipped in April 2016.

Yep. I have a 19-2 (marked on the crane) that has all of the 19-3 upgrades....

With S&W nothing is cast in concrete!!!!

As stated - they did NOT throw away anything!!

Perhaps the original owner sold the diamond grips separately, to increase his profit? Not unheard of either, I've seen this happen on this forum.
