.41 Magnum long barrel
I saw minty Smith Model 58 N prefix today. Pinned and recessed with the long barrel. The grips had been replaced with some rubber ones. It looked like quite a handful but was priced at $550.

If it is in decent shape, that isn't a bad price.

The Model 58 only came with the 4 inch barrel. The 57 (adj sights) could be had with the 8 inch.

coneten,
Since you mention a long barrel, I'm wondering if you didn't mean you were looking at a Mod. 57 instead of a Mod. 58.
The model 58 is a 4" fix sighted N frame 41 Mag and was only available in that barrel length. They could be either nickel or blue. The model 57 is a full featured N frame 41 Mag available in 4, 6, and 8 3/8 inch barrel lengths.. They were available in either nickel or blue and currently in stainless.
Is the revolver you looked at like the picture below? If so it is a Model 57...

Max, you and I definitely know what constitutes a Mod. 57 long barrel, and shiney, at that.

That is the revolver I saw today. I think the tag stated that it had a box.

If the gun includes the presentation case, tools and literature, and in 90%+ condition I would say it's a steal!
The 57's are becoming more popular every day and the 8 3/8" barrels are in shorter supply... That price isn't much more than they retailed for 30 years ago and the pinned and recessed cylinder already gives it collector status....
IMHO the 41 mag is a great caliber. You couldn't go wrong with that purchase...

That seems like a fair price. I have a 57 with that barrel length with a nickel finish. It is a very accurate pistol and a lot of fun to shoot. The recoil with that barrel length is not too bad.

Buy it and run...no ifs or buts. These are great revolvers (have a 57 in all three lengths, all are superbly accurate). The easiest to hit with at longer ranges is definitely the 8 3/8".

J. Mark, that was probably the prettiest Smith I ever owned. However, I don't miss it that much. I was never going to shoot it and I am glad you are enjoying it. I probably have a few more I should sell.
