Smile Two 19-2s, 5-inch, Nickel
Model 19s with a 5-inch barrel are really great guns, but tough to find. The 19-2 on the top was shipped in 1965 and was a special order for the knifemaker, Bob Loveless. It has a TT, TH, red ramp, and white outline. The 19-2 on the bottom was shipped in 1969 and was one of three sent to the Florida Highway Patrol for evaluation. It has a TH and standard trigger.

Bill,
Those are great guns! Do you know of any in blue finish? Sounds like the FHP did not decide to buy the gun. It is clear that the diamond grips had changed between the two and it appears the top one has rosewood grips. Thanks for sharing!

Bill...I would love to find one in bright blue. I have never seen one or heard of one.

The 19-2 on the top has checked, rosewood stocks.

I have heard of them but never saw one. It would have been my 1st choice if I had a chance too. I like the darker grips. I have a very close friend that was on I think Dade county S.D. in florida? He told me he has a 4" nickle model 19, but I never seen it.

I had the pleasure of seeing the Loveless gun at the Richmond show on your table.
Bob Loveless passed away recently, he was a true pioneer in the custom knifemaking world. I had the honor of spending some time in his shop a few years back, one of his "helpers" was my roomate in the USAF and took me by to meet him. Bob was a real fan of the Triple Lock and showed me a few of his, along with one of his custom Model 41 .22 autos.

They may not have bought the gun pictured but they did buy the 5" Model 19 in Nkl. I believe it was Bill Jordan who did an article on these guns many years ago in one of the gun mags. At about the same time, my brother located one of them ( a police trade in) in a pawn shop and I bought it. In doing some research I called the Public Service in Tallahassee and asked to be connected to the armorer in the FHP. Actually got the guy on the phone and he stated he was there in 68 or 69 when they came in. They were configured that way to fit the leather they had for Colt revolvers that wore out and FHP didn't want to buy more leather. Asked him about a box and he said they were long gone. Then he said that a few years before I called, they found one in one of the barracks. Asked him if he had it and he said yep, at home with my 5" mod. 19 in it and it isn't for sale. I was at a gun show and displayed it with the gun magazine article and a friend who is deceased now and worked the shows, a terrific elderly man, asked if they were rare and I advised that I thought so. He came in the next day with his. Now the kicker in all of this was the issue numbers were just a few apart but the serial numbers were more than 50,000 apart. My understanding is that 65 went to FHP and the 35 gun over run went on the market and those boys are tough to find. Thanks for posting pictures of two extremely scarce guns in such great condition. Don't have an extra box lying around do you, Doc.??

Bill, the current sale price for Loveless knives, and they are few and far between, is $10,000 and up. Waaaay up.

Wonderful guns. Bill!

As a rookie deputy sheriff, I settled on a then-new 6 inch Model 66 to carry on my duty belt. The extra 2 inches really tamed the blast and racket of the Federal 125 grain .357 Mag ammo I favored. I had a 5 inch Model 27 that also was better than my 4 inch guns that way, but the Model 27 was just too much heavier than I wanted to tote all day.

I wanted a 5 inch Model 66. I conversed with S&W. They would cut barrels but had to remove at least 1-1/2 inches, probably to get the entire front sight and base off. This would have left me with a 4-1/2 inch barrel, not enough difference to warrant the expense. If the Model 19 and 66 barrels had been 6-1/2 inchers, I would have gotten what I wanted made, or if they had made any 8-3/8 inch barrels, which would cut down to 5 inches handily, I would have had what I wanted, but, no joy.

And then S&W's service department quit cutting customers' barrels at all.

I still think I need to take the better of my 2 old Model 66 6 inchers and send it off to Hamilton Bowen for the 5 inch job. That gun would have been perfect.

FHP was fond of 5" barrels for the above reasons and others. They did carry Mdl 19 for quite some time along with Mdl 27's, Colt Troopers, and Colt Pythons.

You should do it. It is not cheap but Hamilton does a nice job and you will have a fun shooter. Some time ago he did a Model 19 for me and I enjoy it a lot.
