Default Model No. 60 Chief's special Stainless price help?

I recently aquired this gun from my grandfather who passed away a few weeks ago. I am yet to put it in my name (anyone know the procedure for all that?) But I am wondering what this gun is worth. I believe it has never been shot and I know that somewhere I have the original grips and I have the original box and paperwork that came with the gun. Any idea on the value of this? Thanks for the help in advance.

Welcome to the forum.

Since ther is no national registration, you do not have to "put it in your name".

From what I have seen on this board, and I am sure others more knowledgeable than me add their comments, it is worth at least $500, espically since you have the box and papers to go with it.

If I were in your situation, I believe that I would keep this fine weapon.

If you take the rubber grips off and post the serial number, someone here will be able to tell you the date of manufacture. The serial number should be on the label on the end of the box. Is this a Model 60, or is there a dash after the 60 followed by another number? This should also be on the box label.

You will get responses pro and con about selling a gun that you inherited from your grandfather. I am normally against selling any firearm that has been passed down from a family member. I have many guns and several I have inherited from my father and f-i-l, they will be the last guns that I ever get rid of and most likely will be passed down to my grandkids.

As for transferring the gun into your name, depends on your state and local laws, there is no national registry. In the states I am familiar with there is no requirement.

As for value the Mod 60 should be worth at least $500. If you do decide to sell it, place an ad in the Classifieds in this forum and give the members here a chance to buy it. There are many here that would love to own your grandfathers Mod 60.

A number of States do have handgun registration or reporting requirements and they generally have a time limit, so it's a real good idea to check your State Police web site or phone your local PD to determine what you need to do to be legal.

The barrel pin was dropped in the early 1980's and Bangor Punta markings ended sometime in the mid-1980's, so your gun should fall somewhere in between (if the box and paper are correct).

I knew I came to the right place! Thanks alot guys! My grandfather left me several guns, this being just one. Any idea on the value of a Colt Mustang MKIV series 80 in .380 Auto Caliber?

Very nice gun. I have one like it that I bought in the early 70's and I had to order it and wait about 6 months. Its' not the most comfortable gun to shoot but with those rubber grips it probably helps. I just wanted to say that in Penna there is an exception to the handgun transfer requirement in that a transfer is not required between father and son or grandson etc., or between LEO's. I discovered that when I tried to transfer a gun to one of my sons at a gunstore. I don't know if that applies in other states or not. You can look up your state laws on the internet.
