Default Are these the correct grips?

It's a P&R S 238182 serial 29-2 I think it should have diamond Target stocks, but it doesn't
There are no numbers stamped or written on the back of the grips.

What do you experts think?

Thanks, Alejandro

Your guns's serial number indicate that it should have shipped with the diamond targets known as "cokes".

The ones in your pic are from sometime after '68, and wouldn't have a serial number stamped on the inside. As a general rule, only magnas had the serial number stamped inside the right panel, since the factory finished those style grips to the frame and needed to make sure that they stayed with the correct gun throughout the builld.

There are exception to this though, as many posters have mentioned having a gun that has both magna and target stocks that were shipped with it from the factory.

G4F are you sure all diamond targets in 1964 were still "cokes"?

All of the ones shipped on 29's and 57's were "cokes" up until '68. Standard diamond targets were shipped on other N frames like the 25-2's, any left over 24's, and sometimes special ordered 27-2's.

BTW, how you doin'?

These stocks are on a Model 57 that was shipped in early 1964 (S237000 range) and should be correct for your Model 29-2 that was probably shipped in 63/64.

Coke bottle stocks were replaced on the Model 29 as early as March 1967 and possibly as early as sometime in 1966. They were made of Goncalo alves, whereas, other target stocks were made of walnut.

Lightbulb Here's a 29-2 from the same era...

This gun is within 10,000 frames of your number...

In the case of my gun, these stocks are Rosewood and are a little darker than Goncalo which would show more grain contrast, but also be correct for your 29.

This Pre-29 is earlier than yours but it illustrates the Gancalo Wood.

Thanks Bill, also nice to know. Weren't the earlier "cokes" before that either in walnut or rosewood?
I think Sebago Son just answered my question. Thanks

Dick...When the 44 Magnum was first produced in December 1955 it featured target stocks made of Goncalo alves. A few pairs of stocks were also made of rosewood, but not many, as that wood was mostly reserved for plain stocks that were featured on engraved and presentation revolvers.

There may have been a few pairs of stocks made of figured walnut, but I only know of one pair and it may have been Goncalo alves that had very little grain.

Don't mean to thread jack but, I bought a 4" nickle 27-2, made around 79, it has smooth football targets that have a 5 digit # stamped between the holes on right panal that doesn't match my frame, does this mean they came off another gun??

Dang Bill...

Is that the 57 in the odd presentation case that we discussed so long ago? Mine is in the S256,000 range with similar stocks...

Beautiful Photography.

You make me want to throw my camera in the lake and start over!

Most likely those were a special order for another gun. Post pics of what you have and someone will be able to tell you more.

I'd say that if your stocks have the brass screw escutcheon that comes up flush to the surface of the wood like those on Doc44's gun, then for sure they are from an earlier gun.

Drew...the gun we discussed (seems like) many years ago was shipped in January 1965 and in the S255000 range. mtime7....the number is probably a part number. Each stock panel has a part number and often it was stamped on the underside of the panel.

Well, thank you all for giving me the bad news...
I suspected the grips weren't correct but wanted to know for sure.

Anyone to ship a pair of cokes to Argentina??

Thank you, too, for posting great pictures of those beatiful guns.

Alejandro.
