Default Fresh off the magazine rack

while wife was picking up the last few items for our Thursday feast i wandered to the small magazine section in our local supermarket. a magazine titled "inside military surplus" caught my eye with the cover showing a USAF model 15. now, having a K frame on the cover is like a light to a moth in how i react.
so, the magazine in question came home with me. while the wife was cooking thursday morning (which she does exceptionally well), i did what i do well-read about guns and such. it was a very informative article about General LeMay and his influence on firearms procurement for the AF.
Leroy Thompson, the author, did quite well with the facts in the article-they jived with what i learned in Small Arms Specialist Tech School. in one section, properly titled "popular with the troops," he spoke of the training and qualification courses of fire. My time in the air force was after Viet Nam, so i remember the qualification courses as somewhat different than he described. i cannot remember the date of the regulation (AFR 50-57) we used for our courses, but i'm sure it had been revised since the conflict was done over there.
all in all though, it is a good read and has some good data on the model 15 Combat Masterpiece. so if you're looking for some bits of trivial information on these wonderful K frames i recommend picking this up for a good read.

I've enjoyed his articles for more years than I care to admit (because it makes me feel old).

Neighborhood Kroger store used to feature much gun - porn in its publication rack. Management pulled all that a few months ago.

Thanks for the comments; I love being a member of the forum. Unfortunately, it gets harder and harder to find magazines that want to run historical articles. The exception is FIREARMS NEWS

That’s because we still care about history.

I think publishers are just after the ad dollars. More general pieces, like Skelton used to write, don't bring in money. Or, not as much as featured product reviews.)

I quit writing for a knife title after being pressured to publicize a brand that I've never even held! And their PR man never returned my calls seeking a sample.

Another title dumped me, and I think it was due to complaints from an advertiser who thought I wasn't giving him enough coverage. Frankly, I thought I'd done rather well by him considering the product range and the fact that his sheaths smelled really bad. So did that publisher's ethics.

A well known gun writer especially noted for shotgun material and a shotgun book author, told me that he didn't think, Shooting Times had even read the last couple of stories he'd sent them. (He'd placed tell-tale signs in the mss. to see if it was opened & read.)
