Machined Cylinder Ring?
I saw this picture on a for sale thread on another site:
And I can't believe that it was worn into the cylinder. Is there ANY reason why one would MACHINE the ring into a cylinder?

Definitely appears to be machined. I have seen that area polished , allegedly to reduce drag. I've never seen or heard of this. I am NOT a gunsmith, just an old geezer that's been shootin' a long time.........

Probably someone's idea of a "custom" touch, or someone who had a lathe that didn't like the look of a turn line worn in the bluing . . .
I've seen folks do a lot of weird things to guns in the name of "customization".

Hah, my favorite Model 10 HB looks like that strictly from many years of shooting.

That's it: it's for looks. Instead of a wear ring (which is not even around the circumference) you have a machined in slot.
