Any fans of the Model 17?
I picked up this Model 17-3 yesterday.
Definitely not a safe queen. It looked like it had been somebody's woods gun. Had holster wear and lots of surface rust. The worst spot was some rust on part of the cylinder where it ate through the finish and caused slight pitting. Also, one ear of the rear sight is bent a little bit forward, but doesn't affect the sight picture. I'm not going to try and straighten it though, because it will break off.
Mechanically, the gun is fine. It cleaned up well, and I'm only into it for 300 bucks.

Looks very nice, you'll enjoy shooting it, and worth in my opinion considerably more than $300. Enjoy.

I don't like them because everybody knows how accurate they are and they remove all doubt that any misses are the shooter's fault.
Oh, yeah, I have 3 of them.

Congrats. That's the type gun that you can use and enjoy without guilt or worry of devaluing it.

Nice gun and a decent price.
I have both a 18 and a 17. I find I use the 17 more as it just fits me better.

A 6" pre-17 and a 4" -6 have seen regular use 'round here for years.

I would say that anybody reading this post is a fan of the model 17. Don't think I know anyone who isn't a fan.
Nice score!

What's not to like about the K-22/M-17? Just about the closest thing to perfection in .22 LR revolver form. Sure yours has a few warts here and there but it should be a fine shooter that you can use guilt free. The best shooter I have is a well worn but rust free 1961 vintage M-17. Heck it had its whole barrel spray painted to cover what had to be the worst fitting holster of all time had done to it, big time loss of blueing on both sides of the barrel. I've been thinking for a few years of sending it off to the mother ship for a nickel finish. Enjoy that one!

You can tell a gun that is well traveled by the wear ...
... and the stories you can tell about what it took to make it look that way.

Asking about fans of the Model 17 is like asking guys if they like pizza.
I'm down to just one revolver in my old age. It's a 17-4.

Yes, I most certainly love my M17-3. No. I don't intend on shooting it. I have others for that. This one is full target. 3 "T"s.

A mod 17 is what I call a "lifetime" gun. It is so useful there won't be a time you would ever want to be without one. From teaching your kids and neighbors to shoot, to competition, to hunting, to plinking, there is no end to the list. The problem is you will eventually get more than one, and then you have to decide which one you want to shoot.

I would say it's pretty hard to not like a Model 17, even if it's not a "Model 17." My four screw isn't marked as a Model 17, anyway.
If wear is an indication of where a gun has been, this one hasn't been far.

(that flat looking spot on the end of the barrel in the lower picture is a trick of light.)

I bought my k-22 new in 1961 when I was 15. I mowed lawns and every other thing I could do for 2 summers to get it. New price at that time was $81.00. I'll never sell it, probably give it to one of my sons. I love it. They are a wonderful firearm.

Congratulations on the purchase as they are great revolvers and once bought are seldom sold. It is pretty hard to even find one for sale around here. I have a 17-4 with the 8 3/8 inch barrel that shoots like a rifle in terms of accuracy.

I am a Colt guy, but even I like the model 17. Have a pretty nice 17-4, one of the last P&R. Very accurate, and the price was right. They have quite the reputation which was why I got one instead of just getting a Colt like I would have preferred.
I do have two complaints though. One is purely personal preference.
1, the K frame is a tad large for a 22lr. I would have preferred a Colt D frame size. But hey, at least I know it will NEVER wear out.
2, the final polishing is pretty poor, at least on mine. I am used to the perfect polishing jobs on Colts. When I got my 17-4, I was shocked and at first thought it was refinished. Then I realized that it wasn't refinished and it was just lesser quality polishing. They left quite a bit of 'grain' instead of polishing it all out. The worst area is the cylinder flutes where they left deep machining marks from when they cut them out. Some of the marks are at least a thousandth of an inch or so deep. The barrel also has grain in certain areas. They just blued right over all that. Very noticeable too. I couldn't believe it.

If your 17-4 was made during the tumultuous times when S&W ownership was taken over by Tomkins plc, that level of quality control is not that surprising. That was a dark time for S&W... Tomkins plc nearly sent S&W into the ditch.
I have an N-Frame made during that time frame where the grip frame recess on the left side was cut a tad too shallow, resulting in any target sized/style grip that I put on it, they have a small gap between the underside of the top of the grip and the frame surface instead of being against it with no gap.

I have two M17s. They both seem to do ok but I will get rid of both of them when I find something that does better. I will probably have to look a long time but patience is one of my virtues. Larry

`I had a 17-3. But I swapped it for an 18-3 because I also have a pre model 17 from the mid 1950's. I figure I got the best of both worlds now.

I've got a few 17s, pre 17s, 18, 34s and a 63. I have my original
K22 from about 1964. It is got thin blue and holster wear, my
main carry gun since. I have never owned or shot a 4"-m17,
would like to try one, but my old 17 kinda grew on me. I just
recently got a 63, my only SS S&W. It's the only one I can't
warm up to. If I had to keep only 1 handgun it would be my
old one, even though I have a earlier one NIB.
