Default 1970 N Frame 3 1/2” Proper Grips

1st post...Recently aquired a 1970 27-2 with a 3 1/2” barrel. Grips were presentation magnas in rough shape that I don’t think are original to the gun. I want to replace them and would like for some of you experts to weigh in. The gun doesn’t have a target trigger so i think targets are out. So far my research tells me i need to look for checkered magnas (no diamonds) with black medallion washers. Does that sound right? Also, im struggling with the wood type and color. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forum

The revolver on the bottom is a 1975 vintage Model 27 wearing it's original factory supplied grips

However mine does have the target hammer and target trigger and left the factory with a presentation case

I agree that yours would have left the factory with Magnas.

As to wood, that is around when Goncalo Alves was rolled in, but Smith and Wesson wastes nothing so the overlap from Walnut could have been a long time depending on inventory and sales. Either one might be right

The correct stocks for your 27-2 are Magna stocks made of American walnut, black oxide stock circles, and no diamond around the escutcheon and nut.

Target Stocks were not made standard on the 27-2 until 1975 or 76 and are too big on the short barrel anyway.
