S&W M15-2 value?
The new gunstore in my town has a S&W M15-2 (4 inch barrel) for sale. Visually, it is in rough condition. It was a duty gun and it is apparent that it spent many years in a holster. Almost all the blue is gone on the right side. Very little blue is left on the left side. I can see no rust. Stock are beat up like the fellow didn't care about this "tool" of the trade. However, mechanically, this gun is sound with nice trigger (both da and sa). Asking price is $150.00. Would you buy it if you didn't need it? My first thought was $150.00 might be worth it parts. Now I am thinking about the cost to re-blue it and if it is worth the effort? Does anyone know how much S&W would charge to re-blue the gun?
What do you think?
Thanks for your opinion,
Mark

I don't know what sw gets for reblue, you can check the website or call, but I think whatever it is plus the 150 it takes to buy it would add up to more than the gun will ever resell for.
If you need a truck/woods gun buy it and use like it is.

Assuming everything else was OK, I'd jump on it for $150.00. I wouldn't think about getting it reblued.
Old, blue worn guns have character.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat. (In fact, I have done so!)

For $150... BUY IT, however why would you take apart a functioning gun for its parts? The parts on a model 15 are still readily available. I personally like the bargain guns they make good projects, and they have character.

I would buy it and shoot it. I would only replace the grips. It is mostly likely worth less than $150 but that would not stop me for one minute. At $150 on that Mod 15, you can always get you money out of it.

Sounds like a gun with a lot of character. $150 for any mechanically good S&W is definitely worth it. If you're looking for something prettier, continue looking. Rebluing will not be worth it financially as others have pointed out. Besides, you'd be destroying the character and history of the gun.

I picked up a M19 like that a while back. Make sure it's mechanically good to go and shoot it.
The S&W blue job will put you way over what the gun will ever bring and it won't shoot one bit better.

First of all, thank you all for the advice and information. I think you just cost me $150.00! If lack of blue adds to the charactor of the gun, this gun has A LOT of charactor and would be the biggest charactor in the safe.

I would buy it for $150 and use it as a truck gun. But, I would also offer only $125 out the door and see if the shop will accept. Good luck.

You know it would be a good pistol to take to the range, Out in the canoe and just a basic good accurate shooter without the worries about scratching it, Dinging the grips of letting your friend Joey shoot at the range, There is something to be said for a well work gun, Like a nice hammer that has been used for the past 40 years, o matter what it looks like it has served someone well for many years!
Dont have it reblued, Just love it for what it is!
I have a model 49 which was a PD BUG on the ankle, There is rust and pitting on the gun and most of the blue is gone, It is with me on the hottest days when sweat happens and when ever we are out in the canoe,,, I just clean it and wipe it down with some oil from time to time.
Now monday has passed, WHere is that Model 15?????

I'd buy it, treat it to new set of grips that fit my hand, take it to the range, and enjoy it.
