Thanks brother. I've been after one a long time... like most other folks!
Finally got to shoot her the other day and I'm hooked. Nothing like a big iron sight N frame.

I'm glad this thread is alive and well. I just picked up a very clean 58. It's an S prefix 257xxx. I'll get it up on here ASAP.

The more I use it the better I like it and now it`s my fav.
I found the grips on ebay unknown maker marked made in Italy.
They fit my hand very well they are keepers.
The crude front sight is home made, I can SEE it , so it`ll stay till it falls off.
I have lots of fancier , more expensive guns , but this one goes to the range every time.
I aslo have a M-65-which I am quite fond of- I guess I just like plain vanilla guns.

58
Jack - My first 41 was/is a Blackhawk. SuperMan told me I'd be hooked. And I am. I reallylike the cartridge and have found it to be very accurate. With moderate loads behind LSWCs I find it easy to shoot. I am very much looking forward to the arrival of the 58. It will be fun to compare it to the Blackhawk and the M57 at the range.

Check out my new avatar....Its my model 58 with new Ahrends Retro Combat in cocobolo. I finished them my self in tung oil. I think cocobolo is related to rosewood , it is just as dense...hard as a rock and polishes up to high shine.
I think it only fitting , if you belong to unoffical club, to have your 58 by your name.

A great find from a friend which found it's way to me.
I was looking at this fine 58 and talking to my buddy about who may be interested in his S series 1967-1968 M58. Well as we had lunch I thought this beauty should be in my safe. On later reflection since it is a .41 it will make a fine 41st BD gift to my wife. If I can hold back for another year before spilling the beans it will be a miracle. I had no clue as to the value on this gun until I got home and did some research. About twice what I paid was a nice surprise.
A great place for .41 ammo.

very nice!
That is an outstanding package you have there Bull....I only wish that I had the box and papers for my Nickel 58. I don't know how many nickel 58's were produced in the S series, but I would imagine that it was quite low.
Good find, and I won't tell your wife if you don't

I read somewhere it was 10 % of the total production.

Snake loads for the Model 58
In the last two weeks, we have killed two Copperheads right close to our front and back doors. I tried getting the plastic shot capsules from CCI, but they don't make any for the 41 Mag crowd....
I had emailed back and forth with a member here as he was making shot loads up for the 41 mag out of 30-30 brass.....has anyone perfected this idea, or maybe have some other ideas for good 41 snake loads?
I would love to hear what you guys are putting together. My neighbors keep telling me that there are lots more snakes out there and I am really tired of packing around two guns (one with snake shot, and the 58 for everything else).
Please feel free to share what you guys are making up and/or using.

The only problem with "snake shot" is if you use it too much it could erode the rifling out of the barrel. I do not think a dozen times would hurt but would not want to push it with such a valuable gun. jb

JB,
I have heard this about 'rat shot' in the 22's , but never about CCI snake loads....is there something that I am missing? I figure lead shot won't hurt anything just like lead slugs wouldn't.....what causes the rifling to erode?

Made-up shot loads usually are simply a light powder charge, followed by a copper gas-check, then fine lead shot almost up to the case mouth, followed by an inverted copper gas check held in place by a roll crimp.
It is a misnomer that this 'erodes' or harms a barrel in any way. It may lead up the bore to some degree, depending on how hard the charge is pushed, but it's impossible for this combo to harm anything on the gun whatsoever.
This was being done years before CCI came out with plastic shot capsules. And I don't think you'll ever see capsules marketed in .41.
Recall an article where someone found veterinary gel capsules in the proper diameter and used 1/2 of one of those to increase shot capacity.

I purchased some .414 SuperMag cases just to try and make up some shot loads but have not gotten around to it yet. Since there are so few snakes around where I live and poisonous snakes are VERY rare there really is no hurry in doing so...

.41 Mag. shotshells
A fellow by the name of Ed Petersen was selling these on a couple of the gun auction sites.
I haven't shot any yet, nor taken one apart to see what's in them.

Found a dealer on Auction Arms who has Petersen Shot Shells but none in .41 are listed. Sent him a message asking if they are available....
Thanks for the tip. A long time ago I remember someone selling .41 shot shells but never did buy any..

Contacted the dealer who turned out to be the manufacturer. He has posted more .41 Magnum shotshells on AuctionArms. If you put PETERSENS in the search box they come right up...

I am thinking that the .414 cases will have to be run up into a .40 S&W die to get the neck past the cylinder throats....

I just got this at my Dealer's last night....
Can I join the club? S/N S314***, and the grips number to the gun. No box or anything though. I still need to clean it up. I just might make it to the range on Saturday.
Cheers,
Rick

Welcome Rick,
That is a pretty clean looking 58. You might look into a Tyler Tee grip adapter before heading to the range, or maybe some better stocks. Those original magnas can be hard on the hands with stout loads. Save those original PC magnas though, they can be very hard to replace. Happy shooting

Do the Tyler T grips work well with the magnas in taming some recoil? I love the looks of the magnas, but have considered getting some Ahrends boot grips or something else (wood).

Shooting the 58 with the right loads will make a world of difference.
The Guns and Ammo link below has a lot of information on the 58 .
Smith & Wesson Model 58 Review - Guns & Ammo
.41 Magnum for the NON-reloader - The Firing Line Forums
[IMG] [/IMG]
I put target grips on our 58 and still need some 1000 FPS ammo to check it out.
Georgia Arms had some SWC cowboy loads at FPS 800
The 1400 FPS with issue wood was brutal and 12 rounds was plenty without gloves. The skin was a bit raw. I don't have office hands either. I work construction.

The Tyler Tee grips don't change the width of the grip at the back of the frame like adding target stocks or combats will. They will however, keep the gun from 'twisting' in your hand. The help to fill your grip and keep the original look of the gun. If you plan on running some hot loads through her, you will probably want to find some comfy rubber grips that distribute the recoil impulse over a larger area. The rubber can also reduce the recoil by compressing to absorb the impulse.
The Ahrends boot grips are great to carry, but you will be sore after a short session with hot loads. I tried some Eagle boot grips on my 657 3" and they came off when I got home - the 210gr barn burners were too much for those itty bitty grips with the sharp checkering.
The stock magnas are classy and the Tyler's help a bit, but find some grips that you really enjoy shooting with, and take those to the range. Keep the Tyler's and the PC magnas for the photos (and BBQ's)
Have a happy 4th

Great trip to the range!
My wife and I just got back a short time ago from the range. She shot her M60, and I took my new to me M58. We had a great time! It is warm and humid here in SW PA today (81 degrees with 75% humidity).
I had loaded up 50 rounds for my M58. I used a similar load to one I shoot out of my M57 that uses my home cast 215 grain SWC over 5.0 grains of Hodgdon CLAYS powder with Winchester LP primers.
For the M58 I used 210 grain Berry's plated bullets I wanted to try, with the same powder charge and primer in new Starline brass. My first six shots at 10 yards I was just aiming at different points on the target to see how things went and I didn't take a pic of that target.
Below is my target at 10 yards, followed by the 15 yard target both with 12 rounds and the last target (I was out of the Caldwell targets) was rested at 10 yards with 20 rounds.
You can see how clean the load is in the couple of pics with my M58 in them. I didn't take the chrono today, so I don't have any velocity info. Btw, I did put some orange paint on the front sight ramp yesterday. My eyes just need some contrast.
I really like this load with CLAYS! The M58 is all I hoped it would be. Also, I have a set of Ahrends Tactical, non-finger groove grips in Moradillo wood on their way
Cheers,
Rick

Aloha,
I found for best recoil control and fast Double Action(IPSC) style shooting,
the Best grips are the now discontinued Pachmayer Bill Jordan Trooper grips.
They are a bit Large for my hands, but, I find them the Best for constant DA shooting.
Yes, this 57 has been sent back to Smith to have the front sight changed.
One day, I am hoping to get a pair or 2 of Herrett's Jordan Troopers for my 57s and 58s.

2nd range trip for my M58
It is another warm and humid day here in SW PA, so what better to do than to go to the range with my wife and three S&W's. My wife shot her M60-10 again and I took my M58 and my .32 HE in .32 S&W Long.
I loaded 100 rounds for my M58, 50 using Starline brass, with the Berry's 210 grain plated flat point over 8.0 grains of Unique sparked by Winchester LP primers, and 50 rounds with just the powder being different; 5.5 grains of Red Dot.
Shooting went well with no issues. The Unique load is very nice. I am pretty happy with it. It was a comfortable load to shoot. I don't think I will be taking the powder charge any higher. The Red Dot load did not seem to me to be as good as most loads I use Red Dot in, but maybe it was just me.
I shot at 10 and 15 yards. Most targets were shot with my arms rested on my range bag. I left the chrono at home again. It is complicated to set up at the range since the firing points are on a raised deck. I have to take a tripod to mount the chrono to and with the legs fully extended, I can just clear the bottom target backer board support. I'll chrono the loads sometime at the hunting camp range. It's easier to use there.
Oh yeah, I did put the Ahrends Smooth Tactical stocks in Moradillo wood on. I like them!
Cheers,
Rick

I scored mine at a gun show in Nor Cal for a reasonable amount of money. I shoot it very little, but it has an excellent feel to it. Some day I will take it down and shoot it at my regular IDPA match just for the hell of it.

my 2nd 58. Would have preferred an earlier one but this one came with these grips and they make up for the hole.

SuperMan,
I really liked the Unique load. That is one i will keep loading. For a new shooter/soft shooting load, I will probably use the Clays load I had posted about. I am pretty happy with both of these loads in my M58!
Nice guns everyone! My 58 has quickly become one of my favorites.
Cheers,
Rick

I guess I'm the newest member of the club. Picked up this pretty nice shooter from my dealer today. Neat grips help with recoil. So far I'm not to impressed with the accuracy though. maybe I'll try a couple of different rounds to see what she prefers.

Welcome to the club Gordylew! My 58 has become one of my favorite Smiths. What loads have you tried? Factory or do you handload?
Cheers,
Rick

BTW, the 41 mag case will last almost forever when using 900 fps
"target" loads. Since I started, I have kept records of how many reloads I
have gotten out of the original 550 cases. I have stopped counting
once I reached over 50 reloads on the batch of cases I use Only for target loads
I have other cases just for 1200 fps jacketed magnum loads. The Most I
have gotten so far is about 12 reloads.
BTW, if anyone asks, Old discontinued Hornady Silhoutte FMJ 41 bullets
WILL go thru a 1968 Oldsmobile side to side, including one of the
metal side impact door plate.
Will also penetrate closed trunk and stop in the front dashboard.

Wish I would of had a mentor introduce me to the .41 back in my young Marine days. Go for it!

Welcome Gordy!
I have had several model 58's now and they all shot POA with 210gr rounds. Those combat grips that you have should help soak up the recoil a bit too.
Good luck, and let us know how she does with some different loads.

This indians arrows land in pretty small groups when fired out of his 57. lol. So far I find vertical stringing to the low left with Georgia arms 210 gr hp. I do load for .44 but have not bought dies for the .41 yet.

I haven't shot any factory loads out of my M58 yet. The two handloads I use (5.0 grains of Clays & 8.0 grains of Unique) under a Berry's 210 grain plated, shoot very well and to POA, when I do my part.
I always suggest folks get dies for their .41's if they already load for other pistol calibers. It is a very satisfying cartridge to load for.
Cheers,
Rick

Yep every chance I get. Here is a 1967 vintage S serial number that I picked up last Saturday at our local clubs Open House and Swap meet. Came with 1 bad spot on the left side of the barrel which I can live with, a ugly set of Sile grips which I replaced and a trigger shoe which I removed. Also had a little brown haze on the topstrap and grip frame from sweaty hands which I cleaned up with oil and 4 ought steel wool.
Shoots great and functions perfectly.

Yep, just received my El Paso Crossdraw in order to tote my M58 into the woods this Fall.
Looking forward to taking a deer and helping fill the freezer with the ol' M58. Sold a Ruger BH in .41 to get it.
We shall see.......
