American1776,

I think handloading is the way to go with the .41 mag. I know I wouldn't be able to shoot as much or as often if I didn't handload. My M58 is one of my more accurate handguns. A real favorite of mine. You have certainly picked a great S&W.

Cheers,

Rick

The first trip out with my new s&w m58 to the range everyone was shooting autos that we're very quiet. I woke them all up with the 41mag. They all stopped and looked. I like the attention it gets.

All activity ceased while I went through my 6 rounds. The range master, who later became a really good friend, hurried over and asked exactly what the heck was it that I was shooting. I will never forget the look on the other cadets faces...it was priceless - none of them had ever even heard of a 41 Magnum before that day....some came the next day with double hearing protection....I guess that I made an impression ......I only wished that I had a model 58 to carry at that time.

Great story SAFireman! On the few occasions that I have shot any of my .41's at an indoor range, it was quite an eye and ear opening experience for the other folks there, haha.

Cheers,

Rick

Looks good to me too...now where can we have badges made...cheap.

The .41 Magnum was really unnecessary as was the Model 58....it was all about marketing a new "weapons system" to LE. The probably better solution to the Model 58 already existed....the Pre-Model 21 .44 Special. The problem was because of the .44 Special Triple Lock and some other even less robust guns on the market, neither Remington or Winchester would make anything other than the 246 grain round nose lead bullet.

If there had been a .44 Special +P round with a 225-240 grain soft lead bullet that did an honest 950 fps from a 4" barrel it would have been exactly equal to the .41 Magnum Police Load.

The Model 21 also has a tapered barrel which makes it lighter but that said it would also have recoiled more than the 58 does with an equal load.

There was also the .401 Herters Power Mag.... If S&W didn't have such a big EGO that would have made a MUCH better LE round than the .41 Magnum. Bullets would have been between 135 and 200 grains and would have covered everything that the .40 S&W and 10mm do now in semi-autos.... And Colt could have easily adopted the round to the Python/Trooper line. It was a true crime that the .401 died....

But I'm not complaining... The .41 is way more than the .357 will ever be capable of and will do everything the .44 Magnum will with with less perceived recoil.... It would be an interesting race between a .401 and a .41....

Herter's .401 PowerMag

As a new Model 58 owner and a new .41 mag owner, and first time S&W owner, I have a question. (apologies if this is naďve)

How well does the model 58 stand up to 'long term' use in .41 mag (factory loads)? I understand that the N-Frame is made to handle .44 magnum, and from what I understand, .41 mag is supposed to recoil less than the .44 mag. Is it safe to infer that the N-Frame will handle .41 mag even better than .44 mag?

Is there anything particular to my model 58 that I should look out for in terms of wear over the years? Or is the N-frame .41 mag pretty much 'overbuilt' for that cartridge?

I'm still learning about this revolver and cartridge.
Thanks

My opinion is that regardless of caliber be it .38 Special or .44 Magnum, over time all S&Ws will loosen up to some extent. How much and how fast depends on what it is being fed.

In the case of the .44 Magnum, a constant diet of full 240 grain factory loads will loosen the gun up quicker than a .41 on 210s....it seems there is just enough more metal to absorb the shock that it makes a noticeable difference.

In the case of the 58, it will loosen no quicker or slower than a 57 with the same loads. If you want to enjoy your 58 the most try and find some of the Georgia Arms 210 LSWC target loads. They are basically going the same speed as the original 210 Police Load and are much more fun to shoot. The Speer 210 Deep Curl (Gold Dot) HP is loaded a little slower than the Remington 210 SP and Federal 210 HP.

Only problem with this club...
I can't find a way in.

I've been looking for a shooter 58 for so long I forget why.
The last one I saw was $750 with rubber handles.
Guess I shouldn't have passed on all those ex-police 58s for three-four hundred bucks not so long ago.

Congratulations on your Model 58, Rob!

I carry mine like this. In the winter, it's worn under a coat. In warmer weather, I wear it under a sport jacket, a vest, or, when hot, an unbuttoned Hawaiian-style shirt.

robbt-that 58 just begs for a set of football targets on it.

And cherry river, it took me over 20 years to find the right one when i had the resouces to do it. I hope it doesn't take you that long.

$750 for a shooter grade is pretty much the norm around here...****n of the mill N frames bring $500 and up, so you can expect to spend more for a 'cult' (limited production) gun.

I do hear of people getting lucky from time to time and finding a screaming deal, but those seem to be the exception rather than the rule.

I can tell you that I am not letting go of either of my 58's any time soon

Love those Farrant's rob....I wish that I could find a fully checkered version with swells on both sides (in N frame).

The old ammo boxes are too cool for words, there can't be too many of those around either.

Welcome to the club

Default "58 club"

Keep looking CherryRiver. If you want a bargain do not waste your time on line or at gun shows. they are both good entertainment, but poor fishing for bargains. I scour the local classifieds up to 150 miles from my home. I have found some very good deals that way. The 58 shown here was bought last year. It is a poor photo, but the gun is 95%+ condition, and it came with 220 rds of factory 210 gr ammo, for a sum south of $600. you are going to look longer and harder, but half the fun is in the hunt

Very nice robbt! Period correct would be the 12 round cartridge slide.

Still made in black basketweave by Triple K Holsters. And yes they did make dump pouches for the .41 you can use the 44/45 ones just fine, same with the cartridge slide.

Speed loaders did not come into common use until the late 1970's. I used cartridge slides on my duty gear right up until the early 1990's.

Here's mine!

It obviously spent a large portion of its life riding around in a glove box. Internally, it looks like new. The ejector rod was almost perfect when I bought it telling me it wasn't shot much. I have put a few rounds thru it and will continue shooting it. The grips are modified targets I found in a lgs. Supposedly they were modified by a state trooper for his off duty gun. Not sure what it was but they work out pretty well on the 58. Yea, its a big heavy beast BUT it also packs a serious punch and there is just something about a fixed sight S&W! Being a HUGE 41 fan, its one of my favorite pieces. Been looking at others recently, might just have to increase my 58 collection to 2.

Y'all boys are killing me.

I'm a .41 Mag junkie, and I cast and load for my 57 and Redhawk .41 Mag. And I carry the 57 off duty regularly. That said, I still haven't been able to score a good 58 (which I want in a bad way). It will happen one day, but who knows when.

Last week I was visiting with my retired lieutenant, and he casually mentioned having owned a pristine 58 years ago. He started his police career in '72 with a four inch Model 57 which he also sold years and years ago.

I know this is a little off-topic, but since we're talking about holsters and speedloaders, I hope this post is ok.

The New Jersey State Police used cartridge loop swivel holsters which remained virtually unchanged from the establishment of "The Outfit" in 1921 to the end of our revolver era in 1982-1983. The earliest of these holsters had 12 rifle cartridge loops (for our Winchester 94 .30-30 carbines) and 12 pistol cartridge loops. The later holsters eliminated the rifle loops and had 30 pistol cartridge loops in 2 rows. In the last 12-18 months or so of our revolver days, we switched from 6"-barreled revolvers to 4"-barreled Ruger Security Six stainless revolvers and went to some sort of security-type holster with the same cartridge loop setup. Both the revolver and holster were roundly disliked, but that's another story.

Here's a photo showing an earlier holster having both rifle and pistol cartridge loops.

Thanks, scott!

I wish I knew, but, unfortunately, the maker is unknown to me. It is vintage and unmarked.

Looks in decent enough shape to me, Mike!

robbt,

The two loads I shoot the most out of my M58 are 5.0 grains of Hodgdon CLAYS under a Berry's 210 grain plated, and 8.0 grains of Unique under the same Berry's plated bullet. Both loads are put up in Starline brass sparked by Winchester LP primers.

The Clays load is very soft shooting and works well for giving new shooters a chance to try a .41 mag for the first time. The Unique load is very accurate and comfortably "snappy", haha.

I have used 17.5 grains of 2400 under my home cast SWC's weighing 215, 220, and 245 grains. It has given me accurate loads out of my M57, M657, and my Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter. I haven't shot any of them out of my M58 yet. I imagine they would all be very stiff out of it

Cheers,

Rick

FYI (everyone's) there is a decent shooter grade-looking M58 on page 24 of the current Gunbroker auction list for S&W Revolvers. (Not supposed to link directly to an auction IIRC) Buy it now price of $650...I have NO affiliation with the broker, etc.

That is a very nice specimen in nickel!

What are the rounds laying out in front? Silvertips?

Yes they are. My LGS had 2 boxes of them sitting on the shelf last week.

He made me a good deal if I took both boxes for $50 inc tax.

How could I refuse?

Robbt- If the one on GB was the one with the finger groove Pachmeyers ikor is referring to, I may be the reason you can't find the ad.

Didn't mean to snatch it from under you, but I wanted in the club too!

When I get it, I'll try to post with some pictures.

Good job! I was wondering where it went....$650 is a steal....they have been going for more than that lately (sometimes a lot more). Post your photos and ranger report when you get her in.

If it was the one I saw with the Pach's, it was pretty nice looking and a good price. Good score! Pictures are mandatory when you get it

Cheers,

Rick

I emailed robbt and opined that some one here had snatched it with a phone call, although neither of us was sure about that until now. :-) Conga Rats...I'da bought it except I just picked up a new DW VBOB in black so my spending cash is all gone for a while now.

Thanks guys.

One load I have shot a few of from the 58 is 6 grains of Trail Boss under a 215swc (commercial cast). Only reason I shoot these so slow is they lead when driven hard. I am working with powder coating bullets now so I can shove these same bullets or my 245swc cast to much higher velocities. My goal is to find a load that will print to point of aim at 25-yards. I'll then learn holdover for other distances. The 58 is one of my absolute favorite S&W 41mag's and I own a bunch (yes, its a incurable disease), a couple of the PC guns are in the running for favorite. I'll try to remember to post back my results, if any care for the info.
