Bought my 58 at Clark Brothers, outside Warrenton, Va. in 1987. My two sons and I have put a lot of rounds through it since settling in Texas in 2000. My youngest son has pretty much claimed it these days. May not have a real purpose for existing, but this big bore baby has served very well as a truck gun, a backup hunting gun for deer and hogs in the brush country and just as an all-time favorite shooter. Its not all that pretty, but its a keeper!!!!

My newest.....
Found it on GB and wanted to join the 'unofficial 58 club.'
It has the smooth target trigger and is in pretty good condition. Has some wear around the muzzle and frame which looks like honest holster wear. Bore is very nice and seems to have been shot very little. Seems tight, and has the smoothest trigger I have ever felt.
Also, can anyone tell me some info about it? Any additional information would be welcome. Serial # S296XXX.

Very nice 58! And congrats.
I had been wondering how the Pachy Grippers looked on a 58 and now I know thanks to your photo.
I will be ordering a set for my blued 58 so I can enjoy shooting some of the original flamethrower 210 gr HP's.
Hmmm..i start shooting IDPA tomorrow...I wonder how the shooting crowd would react to the big boom of the .41..

I used to shoot ISPC with my 657/58s in the 90s. 215 LSWC at 1000fps always Major. Now they didn't like when I shot my Coonan with 125gr JHPs at 1450 fps.

Found some really nice target loads for my 58's today. Was helping my friend setup at a local gun show. One of the other vendors had these HSM .41 mags.
210gr hard cast LWC. He shoots them out of his 57 and chronographed them at 1150 fps. $30/50. I picked up two boxes to play around with. If the weather ever warms up.
And a comparison of a HKS J frame speedloader vs the 57/58 speedloader...

So I did a search of this thread and did not find anything; but I apologize if I missed it.
My question is about ammo in the M58 (again). I just ordered some CorBon 250 gr. Hard Cast Lead Flat Point ammo. It's advertised MZ is 1325 ft/s. My wife and I occasionally go camping, and I want a good stout load for that.
Has anybody used this ammo in their M58? What does it do in terms of recoil/blast? The 'meanest' loads I've shot so far from the M58 are the Remington 210 gr. JSP. Lots of muzzle flash, recoil, and noise. Should I expect these CorBons to be even more intense? What sort of penetration can I expect from this sort of load?

It sure sounds stout. Do you have a chrony to check it out?
We need a range report
I like the Remington 210gr SP...they are a lot of fun to shoot out of my 3" 657. I always draw a crown at the range with that combination....quick note - ditch the Eagle Secret Service boot grips before shooting anything 'stout'

What kind of price is that as far as .41 mag ammo goes? High, middle of the road, a sweet score? Now that I'm thinking about it, is .41 Mag ammo pretty available or more like hen's teeth?
To be such a fan of the caliber, you'd never guess it based on these questions.

Someone asked about the 250 grain hardcasts you can get form Cor-Bon and Federal. I could not get my first 58 to shoot well with them. Went back to the 210-220 grain stuff at 1000-1100 fps and it did much better.

$30.00 for 50 rounds of .41 Magnum or any other major caliber Magnum ammo these days is a great deal.
I have never shot the CorBon 250s but have shot the Federal. They both use the same LBT hardcast bullet that had been supplied by Cast Performance but later I heard that Leadhead was making them for Federal... The velocity of the Federal was 1080 from a 4" 57 and the recoil was not bad compared to the 210 Remington soft points. CorBon usually loads their ammo to the max so I would expect more velocity, recoil and muzzleblast from them.
Go over to MidwayUSA and there is very little of any ammo out there for not only .41 but .44 Magnum, .44 Special, .45 Colt... I did go into a big shop in Connecticut last November...they had 5 different kinds of .41 Magnum but none of the others I just listed...sometimes it pays to be "different".
Glad to see more people joining The Cult... :-)

I wouldn't have guessed thirty bucks for fifty rounds of cast would be a great deal. Ouch.

Well, I'm in the club. After a long search I finally took delivery of my Model 58 today. This one is an S prefix which dates to late '64/early '65. It was purchased from a fellow board member. The Tyler T also came from a another gentleman here.
The picture is poor, but the revolver needs cleaning. I had just returned from the range when I took the photo.
This is what it looked like pre-Tyler and nice and clean.

I definitely prefer the target grips on my 57. Overall I'm extremely pleased. The first thing I noticed is how well it balances in the hand. I like the fixed sights much more than I thought I would. I'm very impressed with the accuracy of this revolver. Very. My 57 and Redhawk both do very well with my cast 210 gr. SWC over 15.3 gr. of 2400, so that is what I had on hand to shoot. The 58 may like the load more than the other two. This one will be a regular at the range. For $700 I'm super happy with it.
It will also be making its debut at court later this week.

After 36 years fron the last one I had, I traded for this one today! It is in much better shape than my last one. This one has it's box and papers and the tag from the shop that sold it! Seller said it was 95% but it is like 99%. So please accept this one for club membership.

No on the hammer and trigger. I believe the previous owner add the target grips and the box lable is marked "S" in the stock section.
N260xxx
If this was an "S" - I would be smiling for a month!

Scott...that is a real nice looking holster!!! And just as nice a 58. It is great there are some agencies that still let officers carry big bore revolvers...
Ray...nice gun...those Winchester 210 HPs...Winchester stopped making them a long time ago...

Sorry, I don't have one. Don't worry it's on my list.
I was commenting on the fact that I go to Green Top literally 3 times a week.

I called S&W and was asking about the #41895 in the Special Features box on the label. The customer rep said it would be something that is not on the revolver as it is normally issued. He said a list of things, trigger - hammer - grips magna's...no target and he said that might be it then. But he had no way to look it up. Roy might, but that would run me $50.00 and I do not need to know that bad. Others have mentioned the grips also.

This is one I had but it is headed to a new home. It is one of the San Antonio PD issue guns. It came with mismatched magnas but I bolted on the smooth target grips for the new owner.

New grips and ammo report
So two new things to add on my model 58.
I ordered some magna grips from Eagle Grips. They came today, and I must say they feel good and fit very well. We'll see how they feel on my next range visit. I think the smooth wood looks nice.
I also got around to shooting the CorBon 250 gr. hard cast rounds that are rated at 1325 ft/p. I don't have a chronograph, but I'll give my impressions on how they 'feel'.
The Remington 210 gr. JSP's are by far the hardest kicking, LOUDEST, brightest flashing factory ammo I've tried. The last range visit, the people in the next booth over commented on how they felt the concussion through the booth wall. They are a lot of fun, and very expensive. I was honestly expecting the CorBon 250 gr. rounds to kick every bit as much, and I was very surprised when the recoil was soft, the muzzle flash was low, and the noise was very mild. I shot 5 rounds of this stuff, and they were all consistently mild to shoot. They were noticeably milder than the Speer 210 Deep Curl rounds I carry in the M58 for daily carry.
This leaves me puzzled. If CorBon were not such a highly reputable company (Massad Ayoob stands by them), I would have thought I was duped. My only guess is that CorBon is using some proprietary powder that can achieve high velocities at lower pressures, and with less flash.
If this the CorBon slug is doing at least 1200 ft/s at 250 grains, then I'm sure the rounds are very hard hitting on the other end.

That Remington JSP was one of the causes of the downfall of the 58 as a PD gun.. Nobody could get anything but that, which is a hunting load and a good one.
It was too much for PD use and the 58 soon fell into disfavor with many LEOs.
The LGS guy gave me a box of that ammo when I bought my gun.. On a cop's salary, I couldn't afford to pay $81.00 for the gun and ammo too.
I fired that box and went to reloading. I have never fired another factory round in the gun since 1967.
I used some pretty warmish loads, but they weren't as nasty as those Remington JSPs.

Thanks for the compliments XTrooper. I like the 'minimalist' look to these style grips. The target grips came with the gun when I bought it, and while they feel good in the hand, they are a little too bulky for carry. I carry the M58 in an OWB thumb break, and the target grips were just a little too long to get in the way. These magnas look nice and carry well.
Iggy: thanks for sharing your experience. I cannot imagine having to shoot those Remingtons indoors in an LEO capacity. While the muzzle flash would also set the bad guy aflame, the noise would be absolutely deafening.
I find that the Speer 210 gr. Deep Curls (Gold Dots) are about 10-15 percent less flash and noise, they are still quite intense.
One day I will start to reload.

Yup, a couple of serious social encounters in close quarters resulted in tinnitus and hearing aids. I sleep all night with the TV on to drown out the constant ringing in my ears.
A lot of practice shooting also taught me that recoil is accumulative in the wrists too.
It's a wonderful gun, but you pays your dues.

CORBON IS INDEED GREAT AMMO. IMHO, THE HARDCAST SOLID 250 GR BULLET IS MORE APPROPRIATE FOR HUNTING BOAR, OR BEAR PROTECTION--AN APPLICATION WHERE YOU NEED DEEP PENETRATION AND BONE SMASHING ABILITY. IT MAY BE GOOD AGAINST BAD GUYS IN VESTS, BUT I THINK THAT YOU WOULD BE BETTER SERVED BY AN EXPANDING BULLET, LIKE A 158 GRAIN HOLLOW POINT, AS OFFERED BY BUFFALO BORE FOR DEFENSE AGAINST HUMAN TARGETS… IT'S TACTICAL SHORT BARREL, FEATURING LOW FLASH AND LOW RECOIL……. Buffalo Bore .357 Magnum 158 Grain Hollow Point 19E Ammo - 20 Rounds per Box

Do Not let Superman see this post...
The 41 Mag is not really necessary. [sorry Elmer Keith], the same ballistics could have been done with proper 44 Mag Police loads...
HOWEVER the 41 Mag became a reality. It was designed with 2 loads, a defensive load and a full power hunting load. Back in the day they were good loads.
In todays world, with proper loads, it would/could be one of the best revolver choices on the Planet.

I will trade you my jet engine for your ringing Iggy...know how you feel. Nothing like having a idling B-52 sitting in your head.
My first expirence with a 58 was back in the mid '70s with the Remington JSP 210's...very hot and nasty round. Not for the weak of heart.

The model 58 in any other caliber just wouldn't be a model 58 anymore.
The 41 magnum round is an awesome caliber. Too bad we didn't have the internet back then it would of been more popular. But we do have a model 58 club now don't we?
If you don't like the 41 magnum please refrain from commenting it's our moment in time right now for the guys and gals to hoist up the m58 flag and give it it's just do finally. Thank you, God bless, bill
