The 41 magnum round is an awesome caliber. Too bad we didn't have the internet back then it would of been more popular. But we do have a model 58 club now don't we?
If you don't like the 41 magnum please refrain from commenting it's our moment in time right now for the guys and gals to hoist up the m58 flag and give it it's just do finally. Thank you, God bless, bill

Right on BigBill!
If you handloaders have not had a chance to check out Montana Bullet Works .41cal lead you should. Good quality hard cast that can be driven to excellent velocities, plus Dave Jennings is a real "stand up guy" that is honest with great value. (No, I do not work for him but am pleased with the product he puts out) jb

Yes there is the shotshell issue.
I have found the CCI/Speer shotshells to be a most excellent product.
I have killed some big snakes with them in 22LR, 22 Mag, 9mm, 38, 44, 45ACP and 45 Colt.
I have also taken a lot of small game for the pot with the 44's and the 45 ACP's.
In fact I never go into the woods without some shotshells for my handgun.
You can hand make some shotshells for the 41 Mag. It is a bit of a pain, but they would be well worth the trouble IMHO.

M-58 with a round butt.
M-58 with a round butt, target hammer and who knows what else.
Just bought this from an outfit in Michigan. The salesman said it has NOT been re-blued. I'm skeptical but will find out in a couple of weeks.

So I've been lurking on this 58 club thread for a month now, I'm down on the 58...only have a couple 57s. Maybe when I find a worthy specimen for purchase/trade I will try to snake my way in the club. I have had several of the mod 58... Loved them all. Also on a side note I have 3of the Ruger BH models in .41mag (I hope that isn't a dirty word in here,Ruger ?) . This cartridge is great in my opinion, I cast and load for it and am well pleased with the results.

NE and all...there are shotshells now available... I can't post the link because of the rules but if you go over to GunBroker and put in Petersens 41 it will pull right up...they are $27.00 for 20.
ayatee...that is a nice looking gun...wonder who did the modifications... The grips alone are worth $250-300.00. With the barrel shortened to 3" it would look like a Model 13 on steroids. The gun would have to be reblued for the whole thing to match...but who cares...it's a shooter!!!
That is a NICE gun...Bob

I found...
A second Model 58! Oh, boy! This one did not have a box or paper work, just the gun itself! I had been trying to trade for it but seller would only sell...so after 3 weeks he said yes to my cash offer and thru in a box of ammo! It does have a few light scratchs but was a lot less then my other one with box and papers. This one will be my carry revolver! And it was a police trade in so I may get this one lettered. Just not stamped. Serial is N54xxx while the new in the box one is N260xxx. So the 54xxx is from 69-72 I figure around 70/71. The 260xxx is from 74-77 so I figure75/76.
Would like a marked police one. And maybe a S, well no maybe, I want one! So the adventure begins...

Congrats Ray!
Very nice looking find. When it rains it pours on some models.
I got both of my 58's within a month of each other, after many years of searching.
I see your not far from Georgia Arms over in Villa Rica. I spend a good amount of time with family in the Atlanta area.
Let us know how the range test goes.

About two weeks ago I was lucky enough to find a H&G #256 bullet mold for sale. This one is the 210 swc design for the .41. I fired up the casting post last week, put them together earlier this morning, and hit the range with my 1965 era M58 later this evening. The bullets are fantastic, the accuracy was everything I could want, and the old hill in the background is Lookout Mountain.

The 210 gr. SWC over 15.3 gr. of 2400 is my favorite load for the cast .41 Mag. Good and stout and extremely accurate.
My problem is I just used up the last of my 2400 and can't find any to replace it. I'll probably start playing around with some Unique.

This S prefix 1965 58 will see duty tomorrow in a IDPA Enchanced Service Revolver match.
Or..How to make everyone stop shooting when you touch this bad boy off...
The addition of the Pachmayr Grippers helps tame the recoil when shooting rapid double action. And I will be shooting about 100 rounds through this as 2nd gun.
The loads will be 210 gr semi wadcutters @ 1150 fps.

Steve I will be using a Don Hume thumbreak belt slide. Very fast rig that I am pretty good with. Even from under concealment, which we have to wear a cover garment in IDPA.
The wife ran the pro timer for me yesterday and I ran the 7 yard draw and fire 6 rounds in 3.11 seconds. Not too awful bad for an old man..
My best time ever on that particular stage was 2.64 seconds with a Model 15-3. Much lighter gun to get into action.
BTW, I shot Fast Draw back in my Cowboy Action days..I wasn't as fast as Bob Munden but I could hold my own.

Scott that will cost me about $80 tomorrow to shoot the course. It will be worth it just to see the reactions from the other shooters..lol.
Steve..awesome choice and I would love to have one. When we were carrying wheelguns our department issued the 99T !
It was one of the best holsters I ever used. And I still have it. Administration tried to force the security style holsters on us back in the late 1980's. They bought Bianchi Hurricanes, which I hated with a passion. Ugly and slow.
This photo was taken before I went out on my last day..

That's very cool! We were never issued such nice gun leather until we transitioned to our semi-automatic pistols (the H&K P7M8) and got Tex Shoemaker holsters for them. During our revolver days, we carried old design Jay Pee swivel holster which incorporated 30 ammo loops (2 rows of 15) for our 6" barreled Smiths or Colts. Those holsters were junk.

I think you might want to start reloading 41 magnum ammo! I know I will be! I think I read in a book by Massad Ayoob where a friend of his uses the Model 58 for PPC shooting! Good luck on your shooting!

Well here are the results of shooting the 58 today.
I shot it as 2nd gun in the Enhanced Service Revolver class.
Placed 3rd in that division, shooting 7 stages, one of which was a all steel target stage.
Impressions- Even with the "reduced" 1150 fps rounds the 58 will tire you out during a match like this.
Accuracy was absolutely great.
I had never fired a 41 in these types of situations. Engaging targets from between stacked plastic barrels magnified the muzzle blast...to the point of rattling your eyeballs..
The concussion was severe to say the least. Rapid double action firing really heats up the forcing cone and barrel..use caution when reloading. I scorched a finger pretty good a couple of times..you don't want to drop your weapon during a reload and I could see how that can happen after firing a full cylinder rapidly.
When it was all said and done, I will do it again. Not on a regular basis, but once or twice a year just for the fun of it.
The comments from the others shooters cannot be printed here...everything from total disbelief to holy ****
And reloading is in my future

Glad you will be doing it again in the near future! I would have loved to have been there at the match! Nothing like real life experience.

Sorry it took awhile with the tax season and all but behind the combat grips lurks a converted round grip frame but the bluing is flawless. It has a 4" barrel even though it looks shorter. It does look like a 3" M-10 on steroids.
It also has target hammer and a target trigger with smooth surface, the action has also been worked on by a pro. All in all I am beyond satisfied.
Pictured between a factory round grip Model 29 and a Model 624 converted to round grip.

Aloha,
I shot IPSC for a full season with my M-57 using hard cast target loads.
They were clocked at 900 fps.
I considered that my every day load for the 41.
For fun I used a jacked load that is 1200 fps. Not as bad as a 44 magnum.
It was more Boomy than Barky and OK for not so fast DA work.
The BEST grips I have found for DA on the 57/58 was originally designed
by Bill Jordon and made by Pachmayer.
Sorry the belt and holster are new, not what I used "back then".
One of these days, I will get some made by Herrett in a nice showy wood.
Sad that many new shooters don't know how good the Jordon Trooper grips
are and how it will make their shooting experience more bearable(Sorry, I couldn't resist)

I have a NOS set of those very same Pachmayr Jordan grips. All I can say is, you must have huge hands!
Jordan DID have big hands and those grips are useless for anyone that doesn't.

Nice looking rig. I used one for a little while, but couldn't get used to how low it hung. I prefered the high ride Bianchi 5BHL or better yet, the Safariland M29.

Thanks! I got used to a low-hanging rig decades ago as our issued revolvers had 6" barrels and were carried in swivel holsters. Also, nowadays, the low slung holsters are a lot easier on my worn out wrist and shoulder.

I love the 99T as a duty holster. I used mine for years. My hand just naturally fell on my gun.
The thumbreak design was perfect for approaching a vehicle operator without the obvious motion of taking the safety strap off. Or in any other situation where I felt I needed to be ready.

I wonder if s&w offered the m58 with a full shroud and underlug. How much better would it handle?
So far I like the 4" barrel with jhp factory load.

Aloha,
About me and the Jordan grips.
At the time I started with the N framed 41s, I was Much younger and really did Not have friends who were gun guys.
I learned a lot on my own.
And I never knew the Jordans were too big for my hands. Did I know that they were too big, yes,
but really didn't think much of it.
All I knew was that they worked well for me and I liked them and got all that my LGS could find at the time.
I just adapted to them and used them to my best advantage.
It wasn't until much later and forums like this did I discover that they weren't supposed to work with my sized hands.
By that time I didn't care and forgot about it.
Same situation with Beretta 92/96s and women.
Many complain that the Beretta grips are too fat.
Well, I know 3 women who have small hands and love the 92/96 series Berettas.
When shooting the Berettas, I mentioned the grip size to the women.
Their response was, Yes they know it's big. So What. They like the Berettas and they will adapt to the gun as the guns
sure were Not going to adapt to their hands. All of them are good enough that I do NOT want them shooting at me.

It also has target hammer and a target trigger with smooth surface, the action has also been worked on by a pro. All in all I am beyond satisfied.

...I just posted the question over on the original thread where were the pics...I should have looked here first. Very nice gun. How do stock S&W N-frame RB grips fit?

" 58s could be ordered with Target Hammer and Target Trigger as well as Target Stocks. I have seen two guns that had the above in the original box with the proper markings on the label. Have seen quite a few 58s with a red ramp but no documentation as to whether it was original, sent back to the factory for modification or done outside the factory.
Iggy...those Dade loaders were fast, but if you dropped them one or more rounds of ammo usually dislodged...

....sorry I didn't see your question... It was in the 1980s in Dallas and really don't remember much about the guns. My feeling was that they were 1970s vintage guns as the stocks didn't have diamonds...

Found a new bullet for the .41 Magnum that looks good... Accurate Mould #41-215V. Supposed to be a 215 grain flat point that ended up casting out to 207 grain in my alloy. The meplat is .37!!! Almost a wadcutter... Pushed with the standard 8.0 grains of Unique/950 fps this is probably as good as it gets for those who like a low recoiling hardcast bullet for self-defense.
Shoots dead on at 10 yards from my custom 58....

I do not know how that shaped bullet would do for longer hunting ranges, but for up close shooting, it would be Bad to the Bone...
Just like the Hard Cast Full Wadcutters Buffalo Bore loads.

Whoever did the work then must have been a craftsman....
The meplat on the bullet is amazing... I had been out of casting my own bullets since 1981 but got back into it last year. Saw this mould in the Accurate catalog and thought it would be worth a try. This has a larger meplat than any .44 or .45 bullet around.
Some small problems...the bearing surface ahead of the crimping groove is supposed to be .05" wide. The bullets are sized to .410 and while they will fit into the throats on S&W and Taurus revolvers will not fit Ruger and Freedom Arms single actions.
The other problem is stability. If the nose isn't perfect accuracy degrades after 50 yards. For most people it would not matter but it isn't a great all-around bullet like a Keith or LBT.
Contacted the company and asked if they could add another grease grove and driving band...the result is the now listed 41-250F that should cast out in the 250 grain range. I think with the longer body it will be more stable at long range. Also when ordering the mold I can have the width and diameter of the forward driving band modified to fit the throats of the single actions...
