Congrats! Just FYI, any gun that is at least 50 years old is exempt from the roster. So not all old S&W revolvers are unable to be imported into the state

Congratulations, I'll bet most of us would appreciate a range report when you get it out of jail!

I brought it home yesterday. Beautiful condition. Grips are numbered to the gun, but I thought I'd dress it up for the debut with a set of "No Bark" stags by Patrick Grashorn.

Very, very nice 3S16.

I have a 3 inch 657 that is partial to 8.0 grains of Unique and a 215 grain Kieth style SWC. Heck, for that matter, I use 8.0 gr. of Unique in my .44 Specials and .44 Magnum with 240 gr. SWC. Easy on the gun and easy on me. Win - Win.

Well after reading all 21 pages and picking up a s serial numbered 58 the other day I feel like I can officially be a member now! I haven't been able to shoot it yet, but that will soon change. I help out at a gunstore and the owner brought out this 58 and I had to have it being a HUGE fan of the 41 magnum. Unfortunately no box or anything else but this gun is going to be used so I'm not heartbroken by any means! I'll have some photos up once I get some proper photos.

Heck probably half the 58 owners don't have the box & papers.
Enjoy it's still a great gun & we would like a range report.
Congratulations.

Thanks and I'll be sure to post a range report! I fell into it by chance and man am I glad I did! It certainly has that old smith smooth and crisp trigger! Upon further inspection it appears the cylinder may have been reblued, it has a different tint to it but I don't mind. It's going to get some different grips(but keeping original) but haven't decided what route I'm going with that yet either. What holster are guys carrying this in? I'm thinking about carrying it for ccw and while out in the field hunting/fishing/hiking. Thanks guys for all the help!

...they were made to carry....

I like the DeSantis Speed Scabbard. Holds the gun high and tight. Has "ears" that protect ones clothes from the hammer (and rear sight blade if the gun has one).

That's a great use for the 58! I have a cheap aftermarket set of stocks that I've drilled a hole in in the butt one on each side of the gripframe. Attach a lanyard through the holes to secure when on the stream fishing. Doesn't bother the finish or integrety of a nice six-gun!

My favorite holster is the Simply Rugged with the inside out straps. With those straps I can use the holster IWB or OWB. It's a nice medium priced, quality holster, & made in America!

Default Nickle 58 w/ stags

Finally got around to taking a pic of mine (I've owned it since 1988). I have the original grips as well. It letters to 1977, Shreveport, La. The stags are heavier than elk, but am not sure whether they are sambar or something else. Hope you guys like it.

Sure, why not?

Heck we even have a fan club for the guys that can not buy a 58 because it is not on some 'safe & approved' list.

All those who appreciate the model 58 are welcome here

Ok question?

Why am I seeing more posts about the 41 Magnum on the other gun forums? What's going on is the popularity of the 41 Magnum soaring today?

Since ruger is offering the Redhawk in 41 Magnum in a 4.2" barreled Redhawk recently tells me there's still a growing desire for a 41 Magnum out there.

Do you think the desires /wants have highs and lows sales wise in certain calibers and models? These seem to go full circle?

I think the first time plastic gun owners are looking at what's out there beyond plastic. Wheel guns are still in demand.

Unfortunately while interest my be increasing the number of new models is decreasing.

It appears S&W is still making the blue 6" 57 Classic but have dropped the 4", 58 and nickel options..

Ruger still makes the Blackhawk in 4 5/8" and 6.5" but I believe the recently released 4.2" Redhawk and planned 7.5" Super Redhawk are a Distributor Special and limited numbers were made.

Taurus has dropped all their .41s....

Freedom Arms can still be had in both the 97 and 83

Henry has recently released their lever gun in .41...

American Derringer has a .41...but would you want to shoot it...

A custom barrel for a TC Encore or Contender...

...anyone I have missed?

Truly sad....

...and what is really ironic is that now there are more manufacturers making a bigger selection of .41 Magnum ammo then ever before!!!

I think that s&w hit the design of the n frame spot on over a century ago.
All they had to do was offer it in 357, 41, 44 magnums and in 45 long colt.
The N frame is a proven design for a longtime.

I think ruger hit it right with the Redhawk too.

There seems to be something for everyone in the 41 magnum offerings.
Why is the nickel finish being phased out I'm not sure.

After not seeing the new 41 magnum ammo being offered we have a supply again. This tells me there are more 41 magnum owners than we think.

Heck for what S&W is asking for the "classic" often you can find a nice old one for less money & it won't have the ......!
That's the route I'm going when I buy another.

You can still buy a double-action revolver from out of state if you live in Kalifornicateya. FFL to FFL. Sending FFL has to send a little extra paperwork to receiving FFL. Rvolver must be converted to Single-Action only. Either before arrival in Kali, or at receiving FFL. Been there, done that.

Also, you convert it back to DA/SA once you complete 10 day wait. Usually receiving FFL can do that. But you may want to discuss the Smith's knowledge of S&W work BEFORE all of this takes place. Ask how I know...
LOL.

Some think if you buy the 44 magnum we cover it all. Not such the case.
They have 22 shorts, longs, long rifle, the three magnum calibers are unique to themselves. Each one is different.

And the .41 is one of the "uniquest" of them all. I'd hate to be without the .22!!!!!

For the ones who want something more than the 357 magnum but don't like the recoil of the 44 magnum there is the 41 magnum. Or if you just want another different caliber to shoot.

..so has anyone bought a new to them 58?? Except on the auction sites I can't even remember the last 58 I saw for sale in person...two maybe three years ago when the last of the 58-1s were being sold off.

Fired the Custom 58 in an IDPA shoot last Wednesday... Although I am slower than I used to be I still had more A zone hits than almost everyone else...

Nothing around here since I bought the nickel 58-1 from a local store in January. I need to do an updated group photo of my five, a blue S prefix, blue and nickel N prefix, and blue and nickel Classics....or maybe I should wait until after I find a S prefix nickel so I have a complete set.

I haven't seen a 58 in a shop for a long time. I hear about one being traded now & then, but other than the auction sites??????
Too bad that's a great gun. Even an old beater is pretty desirable.

I have seen one in two years of local shows. I have sent some PM's to folks that are looking for them when I find one. I have been toying with letting my first year nickel 58 go to a new home as I have been really using the blued on more. The blue one even got carried this spring on a predator hunt and had a chance at a very large Axis Buck, but I deferred the shot to a visitor (which he missed).

I have seen a few show up here on the forum and have pointed the new owners towards this thread for more information on their new "M&P on Steroids"
