It is an S series, I do know that, and the first three serial numbers are 257 which probably makes it a first or second year gun. The Smith book says the model started at 256500 so in best case it could be one of the first 500, number 257000 or in worse case, number 257999 making it one of the first 1500 guns made.....if you trust the big book of Smith. So I would guess it is a 64’ or 65’ Model year. I am liking this deal more and more, thanks to you guys.

The 'unofficial' 58 Club
Under the grips looks good and I should be picking the gun up tomorrow and won’t have to drive but half an hour from my place of work to get it since the seller has offered to come my way......maybe this deal is sounding too good to be true.....maybe I should meet him at a gun range to try it out first.

Now, please excuse that it does not still have the proper form (58 frame, 4" non-lug barrel, 41 mag goodness), but I think that it still qualifies for the club.
This gun started life as did every other 58, but somewhere along the way somebody made it better! They round butted it, the original barrel was removed, a shortened and chopped 57 barrel was installed. Also, the hammer was bobbed, and the trigger rounded and polished. It has had a wonderful action job as well. I added the Pachmayers because the stocks that were on it when I bought it were horrible. We have had a single range session together, but there will certainly be more in our future.
What do y'all think? does she still qualify as a 58?
Here is with new shoes and a range session under her belt.

Stop it Scott, you're killing me.

Picked the 58 up today and now that I look it over more closely I think she is a keeper.

Got the gun from a young man who really is into the classic wheel guns but ran into some hard times and needed the cash. I felt bad getting it at such a low price but offered him the chance to buy it back in the future if and when he was ready. In the meantime I will take care of it and shoot it.

Young guy with a family working hard and loving old guns, but has his priorities straight. I will be a good steward of the gun.
Serial number puts it at just outside of the first 1000 guns. Not sure how many were produced in the first year but if it is not part of the first batch from 1964 it is definitely from early 1965. Barrel and cylinders look pristine as if it were shot very little. All of ,my reservations about the gun have been put to rest regarding its appearance. It would be cool to restore the old gun but I am going to leave it alone and enjoy it just as it is. I will however letter it to see if the LDC part of the story can be verified. Thanks for the encouragement to get this old gun.......

I am glad that you ended up with it. If you get your letter request out in the mail this week, you should have a historical letter back within 2-3 weeks. If you look around some, you may be able to locate some diamond PC magnas that are correct for the gun. Heck, if you are really lucky, you might end up with #'s matching stocks
So, when can we expect a range report?

I like that you will leave as you bought it. Good story great ending especially the part that you offered to return it to the young man from whom you received it.

I was a little surprised at what diamond pc magnas are going for on eBay, but I will definitely get a set.....getting matching serial numbers is probably a stretch but you never know.
I may get out to the range this weekend if the weather doesn’t hit the 90s hear in north Texas. I am going to take my 57 along and finally shoot that one as well. I will let y’all know how they shoot since I have never shot a .41 before......

Well the way I see it, there will be enough guns left behind for my grandchildren and their parents so if he wants this one back in the near future and he gets squared away why not let him have it back.......we are all just temporary stewards of these fine guns while we are here on this earth anyway. But in the mean time I am going to enjoy it. Thanks for all the kind words and for your help in creating the narrative around this gun.
Now one to the next chapter which is to letter it and see what kind of history it has, if any.

I had my 58 out this last weekend (Easter wknd). We rent a little cabin out in the country and he has a shooting range that comes along with renting the cabin . It had been awhile since I shot it . Took a few rounds to get good groups again . It is very accurate when I do my part . With a 220 gr swc (HG258 , Keith design) and 8.5grs of WSF I find it's one of my 2 favorite loads . Same bullet using 11.0 grs of HS6 and full magnum primer this time for a little more power is my 2nd load . Regards, Paul

Had my Model 58 at the range yesterday. Some 215 grain SWC at about 1000 fps went down range. I was having so much more fun than the folks shooting 9mm and .22LR around me!

I purchased the m57 & m58 because I couldn’t find the Redhawk in 41 mag and in 357 mag. I gave up trying to find them, but I did find the m27 & m28.. But of course soon after the Redhawk in 357mag & 41 mag show up. No I’m not selling my new m58 & m57.

These m58 in 41 mag are sweet shooters. TheN frame handles the caliber well.

The first trip to the range with the m58/41mag the range was so quiet with the 9mm’s, so quiet a mouse wouldn’t be bothered. I had the misses shooting her Taurus 94 in 22lr. I took out the m58 and after firing six rounds it was all eyes on me. I woke up them all. I was shooting new federal 210gr just ammo.

here is my model 58 which i just picked up a few days ago. It came with rubber Hogue grips. Since it has a target trigger and a target hammer, I put target grips on it. Whoever had it before me took good care of it. Except for some holster wear at the muzzle and the turn line it is in very good shape. The lighting in the photo doesnt do it justice.

OK, I recently got my 58 from my local gun pusher emporium. It had been electroless nickel plated over what looked like sand. The surfaces looked like it had acne. I had it stripped and redone in hard chrome, since it is intended to be a working revolver. I have a left handed holster mounted under the steering column of my truck, and when I have to go into some of the less civilized areas of Dallas, the 58 accompanies me.
It is fun to go to the local range (indoors) to practice. With the first shot, a deathly silence descends over the lanes, and the dust slowly drifts down from the ceiling. With the second shot, if I am in the public lanes, the person next to me quickly packs up and leaves. I swear the muzzle blast is worse than my wife's model 29, and it also lets everyone know it is out for the evening.

Picked up a Model 58 with no dash and my limited research says its around a 1971 model.
Ser. number on bottom of the handgrip frame is N54887 .
Is that about a 1971 model?
Thanks

Being a ruger Redhawk 44 mag guy all my gun life. Being new to the s&w n frames and shot my new m58 I have to say I’m impressed at what a well balanced revolver it is. I ask myself why did I wait so long to buy s&w revolvers.

I took out a few S&W's today including the M58 pictured above. It sure is a nice, sweet shooter. I really liked it. I like it better than my 6" M57 for sure. Earl

I just didn't feel fulfilled, never owning a .41 mag, until I got one of these 58 beauties in my favorite finish! Now, for some range time. I feel much better, already!

I am glad that we could help
Is the 58 old enough to off of, or not required to be on the 'we say that it is a safe handgun' roster there in Cali?

Hey SA! Serial #N261XXX, so I'm guessing 1975 on mfg. date.

Here is my 58 S314xxx. I have posted some other pictures of this gun in other threads, but I also wanted to contribute to this thread. Thanks for looking.

IIRC the cut-off for C&R guns is 50 years, so in 2025 it will be eligible. Yay!

Good afternoon, fellow 58 fans. A lot of nice revolvers here.
Quick question for any one of you - could you please measure the height of the front sight on your revolver for me?
I'm looking for the measurement of top (flat) of barrel to extreme top of the front sight.
I had traded for a great model 58 in Montana, that I found later belonged to a fellow member here on the the forum from Missouri. Apparently, if I remember correctly, he had sold it to another member from Texas.
Anyway, this model 58 had the original front sight drilled and fitted with a speck of glow-in-the-dark luminant that was filled with dust and whatnot, and because it was so far in to the sight, never saw any light, and thus would never glow.
Being that I obsess over things too much, I just had to "fix" the thing because all it was was a hole right into the front sight.
So, I sent it off to the factory for replacement, and I just got it back recently, and I'm really disappointed in the work.
The sight does not lay flat against the top of the barrel, so that now I constantly get a rag wedged under the leading edge, and it also appears to be way too high compared to the pictures I see here of original ones.
I thought about taking it out back and shooting it to check elevation, but I'm not really happy about the whole thing, and can't bring myself around to running expensive .41 mag ammo through it, being that the front sight isn't sitting flat against the barrel, to begin with.
So with all of that said, could one or two of you put a caliper on your front sight and let me know what it should be? I'm going to have to get this one replaced too, and I want to fit it with the correct one.
Thanks much, in adavance.

I may get out to the range this weekend if the weather doesn’t hit the 90s hear in north Texas. I am going to take my 57 along and finally shoot that one as well. I will let y’all know how they shoot since I have never shot a .41 before......

I had my model 58 for many years never thinking about the original grips . When I realized how much they sold for (thanks to this site) , I removed them, put them away and replaced them with Cocobolo Retro Combat Ahrends for everyday shooting. Heck , I didn't pay as much for the model 58 with the grips on it than the grips alone go for...why so much for grips ?
I must say I have really been enjoying the unofficial 58 club thread...so very interesting.
I wish we had a 58 Club Tee Shirt...or do we have one and I just don't know about it ?

David LaFleur makes a real nice shoulder holster rig for the N-frames . He made a lefty rig for me that I use to carry my 58 . I bought a set of PC magnas to help it look more authentic . His website is " Cochise Leather Works " , in SE Az . He is a " one man " shop so don't call wanting to talk for 1/2 an hour . Time is money so go to his website and order what you want . It really is the fastest way to order from him . Regards, Paul

After writing this, I was able to remember how to add photos. Here's the pics of my 58 before sending to S&W (with the hole drilled in the sight), and after (with the unseated sight).
I've since removed the unseated front sight, but I'm still waiting for someone to put a caliper on their revolver, and tell me what the height is suppose to be so that I can purchase a replacement.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Just checked mine. It appears to be .210, as best as I can tell.

I have a question for you guys. I have a 58 I picked up a few years ago from the original owner. SN S327XXX. It did not have the box, so I have no idea what the factory configuration was. It has a service hammer, target trigger and target grips. Is it possible came from the factory that way? I would think not, but wanted to see what you guys think. I don't recall if the grips were numbered to the gun, but they are packed away and are not easily accessible right now.
Also... I need to have it worked on. The timing is possibly off, as it binds up in both SA and DA. Any recommendations who to send it to? There are no local 'smith's that I trust to do the work. Our local guy seriously goobered up a simple sight install on my M&P22C, no way will I trust him with my 58.

That One Guy, thanks much for getting me that measurement. The one the factory put in as a replacement was .241, and just appeared way too high.
I found a front sight on ebay, and have it on the way.
Also as for configuration, I have an early N serial number, and it has target trigger, service hammer, and PC Magnas numbered to the gun. My knowledge of the 58's is pretty limited, so perhaps others can help you with more.
As for repair work, I have always had the best service with S&W itself. They have worked on almost every revolver I have as I send them all in to the factory, once I find a new one. The trigger work I get back has always been excellent, and they'll always find and fix things that I didn't even know where issues, and not even charge me for them.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure what happened with this sight replacement that I wrote about, as it was just wrong in more than two ways, but I wouldn't stop sending stuff to them in the future because of this one thing.
Thanks again!
