I was t a local gun shop the other day . He showed me a 58 he had for sale . It had been refinished , chromealloy type or something like it . What was interesting was someone in the past had round butted the grip frame . He offered it to me for $650 , " out the door " . I told him I needed to think about it . I would have to remove the grips and see if the grip change had been done professionally or another " bubba job " .

I guess I'm just too much of a purest, I do not own a model 58 but, do own a nice model 57. I'd have to pass on this modified one but, that's just my $.02.

Over 40 years ago I won an 8 3.8" 57 at a shooting match (it had been fired and came with two boxes of ammo).

My intent was to sell it since I already had a couple .44 Magnums but I made the mistake of shooting it - one of the most accurate revolvers I've ever encountered.

So I started handloading for it. Then a good friend who I boar hunted with (he was an engineer in the ammo dept of a major manufacturer) showed me his model 58 converted to .45 Colt - every time he shot one it just fell down on the spot and I wanted to make one so I started looking for model 58s.

In short order I found deals on 3 of them. One had been roundbutted, one had a lot of wear on the finish, and one was pristine.

I left the pristine one alone and it turned out to be very accurate. I picked the one with the less than perfect finish for conversion but came upon a deal on a .44 Magnum barrel and a cylinder for free so it sort of made its own choice to become a .44.

I cut the barrel off at the ejector rod housing (3.25" I think) and round butted it - alas the most accurate load for it is full charge Federal 240 gr JHPs - they hurt! I sort of shelved the project and have not refinished the gun yet but some day.

Yes, it is possible that it came from the factory that way. I have seen one at a gun show that had the properly marked box. I also saw one I believe here on the S&W Forums...

When you say "binding up", you mean the cylinder gets sticky turning? Is it only on some of the chambers or all of them? That usually isn't timing, it is usually a cylinder gap issue when the cylinder face is dragging on the end of the barrel.

Here is my first year model 58 no dash. I got it off of GB.com from a dealer in Alaska. I assume it must have been carried frequently due to the finish that was applied to it. To me the finish looks good on the gun. Looks like a model 10 on steroids

I don't know what the finish is, it came that way when I got it. I wish I knew though as I like it too

I don't know how he did it, but I sent a 581 to Carl Sokol years ago for some customization and he had to re-blue it and it came with a flat black bluing too - just like that M58.

I might just as well admit it, I'm more into adjustable sighted S&W I can move the sights on to adjust for different loads for. Could never see the high prices on 58s, especially the few that surface every once in a while, I've been looking. I'll stick with my model 57 in four inch. You guys have fun with these.

I have just one 58 . I dropped a pin gauge down the barrel and it stopped where the " roll stamping " on the barrel was . That told me there was a tight spot . 12 rounds of " fire lap " bullets fixed it . It is even more accurate now than before . I fired rounds from mild to wild hand loads , all shot well . I have found owning a set of pin gauges a worth while investment if you shoot revolvers . I went to amazon and got a set for about $100 . I can determine , accurately cylinder throat size and ck a barrel for tight spots from the muzzle to the forcing cone . My group size on my 58 went from almost 5" to 1.5" @ 20 yds after removing the tight spot in the barrel . This was all done using a bench rest , for consistency . Regards, Paul

The serial # is S329. What would the ‘correct’ typical grip be? It has a rubber grip on it now, which will be removed immediately.

Issue grips for that gun were PC Magnas. See post number 1245.
They are rare as whale **** these days.

Is it wrong to put Combats on it?

I shopped gun broker and in the past have found them . I have purchased 2 sets there . go to " gun parts " scroll down and find " pistol grips " then type " Smith and Wesson Grips " . I actually contacted several of the vendors and asked if they had " PC Magna's " , even though they were not listed . I always got , sooner or later what I wanted ,but it took some patience and effort . Yes , they are very scarce and are getting quite pricey . I doubt you will find anyone here willing to sell a set , but you might . Good Luck , Paul

Built by Bill Davis Co. Big as era IPPC builders. This gun not; nor built for me. Simply incidental purchaser in late seventies. Pix below & pretty self-explanatory omitting question of 'why'. Nice gun and 'unusual'! SN S2604xx. (Sorry, no essential 'top shot' in my file pix. But looking completely factory-stock'.) The firm made a good job of it!

Belated return to be quite clear on this customized 41 Mag 4" gun description. It IS a Model 58, converted to the adjustable sights. The 57 target model was with barrel underlug. Model 15 is a better descriptor because all Mod 58 in the model number era. Otherwise Combat Masterpiece apropos. See my pre-15 CM below (From 1949 - first year production) as K frame 'look alike'.

well, you certainly have good taste in handguns.
i wanted to point out the difference in the size of the sfpd markings on my gun and the sfpd owned by mikeruns on page one of this thread. my serial # is s3142xx. is this a fake mark? i bought this gun at a great western gun show in los angeles back in the '70s and it is still the most accurate revolver i've ever shot.(8grns unique+210gr bullet)
i've already stretched the hand once and started to worry about wearing it out so i got this other one a couple weeks ago on gun broker that looked less worn. these things beg to be shot.

I just (re) joined. I had a model 58 years ago, cannot recall the dumb reason for parting with it but I just remedied that. I shoot a model 57 and an old model Blackhawk .41 Magnum and will shoot this as well.
Serial number S2579XX, the grips are numbered and it came with a worn but original box. My Heiser holster tops it off, I wonder if I lived where I could wear a coat if the PC grips would help it not print ?

I found the blue one with the numbers matching grips still on it. Lucky to get the nickel one with cokes. Both are S prefix. Proud to own them.

Yes, Dade Screw Machine Prod.Miami,Florida. By using special length cases, grinding the bottom corner of the cylinder latch, bevel the back corner of the loader, and gouging the grip, i got two second reloads in the practical matches i attended. i actually won one match in a field of .45 autos using that sfpd, but had to switch to 1911 to stay competitive. the dades were straight push thus faster than hks but prone to spill when dropped. safariland came out with a push type, but they were much larger and these matches were c.c.
i don't live in huntington park,ca. anymore, so self defense is more about bears and mountain lions now. an 'N' frame revolver with magna handles and fixed sights suits me fine.

homuser6, IIRC, Dades were prone to spilling when dropped, HKSs weren't?
Need grips to use Dades, I've a set of Rosewood S&W Ns that are tastefully done for this Had a bunch of Dades till I moved now not many.

In 1977 when I was in the police academy one of the presentations I made was on speed loaders. I dropped a Dade and it spilled out half the rounds...I threw a HKS against the wall and it just laughed....
