That I don't know, haven't received her yet found and bought via GB should be here by weeks end. How are his grips marked? I saw the posts on his grips on here and told myself I'd get a set of them when I found the right gun to put them on. Wasn't really looking for a nickel, but the price went lower than I had expected and reading every post about the 58's I had to have one. Love the fixed sight pre locks. Own a 4" model 13 and well carried 581. A blue 58 and then a 520 are next on the list...sn on the nickel is N15357X, if I'm reading the post on N frame serial numbers it was produced somewhere 73-74? I'll post more pics when I get it.

Thanks.
15 pounds of range scrap or wheel weights and two pounds of lineotype metal...have had no problem with leading. If you are asking about the mold, it is a four cavity aluminum...just a joy to cast with.

If you write I believe it's Tom and tell him you want the 41-250F cut back slightly to 240 grains and a gascheck base he can post the design in a day...

...great...I would only advise not to make the first ones too "warm". Those grips will chew up your hand in a heartbeat....

I've already got a set vintage pachmayrs presentation grips to put in it, and it's ported so it should mild it down a little. Guess I'll need to contact S&W to see if it left the factory that way.

I would say that S&W did not do that porting. You can always spring for the letter from Roy Jinks if you want to know where and when it shipped, and the configuration.

I did notice a post from 2013 where a member posted he had looked at or purchased a ported nickel 58 sn N153xxx. Thougt that was interesting since it matches mine except for the last 3 digits. I sent him a message will be interesting to see how close they are. As for the letter we'll see maybe later down the road. Anyway if the porting is aftermarket or not I wasn't looking for museum piece, I like trailer park queens that shoot and am looking forward to it....

This is how it started with my first S&W model 13-3, then I found the really worn 581. Was never a big fan of revolvers was issued a 4" stainless model 66 24yrs ago but immediately traded it out for G21 since wheel guns were for the "old timers." LOL wish id've bought the 66 when I had a chance

I definitely will be at least a week weather turned cold and my range buddy is in Texas killing pigs. I'll include lots of pics. The wait for the 58 to get here is worse than any Christmas wait I can remember as a kid!

Grips are unmarked. Finish is not perfect but is in the condition I was hoping for since I wanted a shooter. Thinking about buying Tyler T grip in the bronze to put on while she wears the stags. I contacted Magnaport and they confirmed that the work looks like theirs but couldn't say for sure since they have no way of looking up by serial number. Will post more pics after she goes to the range.

Default Grips

I will. These are my first set of stags, and I like the way they look and they feel pretty good. Have some nice grooves on the outsides, so they're keepers. I'm not shooting any heavy loads through it so we'll see how they feel, and YES I'm chomping at the bit to get it out!

Very nice.... One of my two 58s has been ported but this one has two ports per side... Shot side by side with the other one, one can feel the difference...

Time to join the club. This one showed up today. S serial number, stocks are stamped January 30 1964. When I carried my 686 at work my partner carried his M58. I always loved the way it shot.

I can tell you from my own personal experience: Extra Bark Stag stocks and magnum loads DO NOT MIX! Great to look at, but hard on the hands.

I had Patrick Grashorn make me a set, they are perfect in every way, except that they are very hard on your hands with stout loads

Just retired after 25 years law enforcement and my guys were paying attention cause I have always wanted a S&W Mod 58. It has always encompassed my idea of the perfect combat/outdoors handgun. They presented this to me last Saturday.

Couple questions,
I have a different number on the crane then the bottom of the grip frame, number on inside the grip frame under the stocks is same as the one on the crane. Which is the serial number?

number on the butt is #S 257791
number inside the crane is #23597

I was told the gun came from the widow of a Montana LEO, the gun came with Pachs and my boys switched them out for some Altamont Magnas and added the T-Grip. Not a scratch and only minor turn ring and bluing rub on the muzzle.

RETDOE...looks like they got you a first year of production probably late 1964 vintage gun (S prefix)...and congratulations on your successful move to retirement.

The matching numbers on the frame are the assembly numbers.

If you are not a .41 shooter or reloader I would suggest some of the HSM ammo from Midway...

HSM Cowboy Action Ammo 41 Remington Mag 210 Grain Hard Cast Lead

It duplicates the original .41 POLICE load that Remington and Winchester marketed with a 210 grain bullet at 950 fps from a 4" barrel.

Some more reading if you like the .41...

.41 Magnum / 41 Special Load Data Center

May it not be your last .41...welcome to the forums and welcome to The Cult...

Bob

Roger that, thank you. I did do some research on ammo since I do not yet reload but plan on it in the future. In the mean time I already purchased 500 rds of the exact ammo you cited, HSM Cowboy 210 gr. All I have fired so far are some Rem 210 JSP and a couple of the Grizzly they gave me with the gun, Wow! Great stuff, looking forward to my new relationship. Looking for a good chest rig for backpacking, checked out the Haugen, Clark and Diamond D, any others you guys know about?

And my wife carries her model 66 the same way for woods carry. We got the 1942 tanker rigs from El Paso Saddlery. They have been up and down about every trail in the Blue ridge mountains at least once. Comfortable to wear all day long.

Take a look at the Hill People Gear chest pack... Several of my backpacking friends use them and they keep the gun out of the weather and out of the way of the backpack straps...

..also if you want a defense load try the Federal VitalShok round that uses the Barnes all copper HP bullet... Barnes, CorBon and several others also use that bullet. Much less kick than the 210s and lots of expansion....

Congrats on the retirement! I've been happy with LAX Ammo's factory new ammo. 210gr copper plated, about 950fps; mild recoil in a 58, fairly clean, and brand new brass. 41 REM MAG NEW : LAX Ammunition Factory New 41 REM MAG 210 GR 250 RDS W/FREE AMMO CAN

For SD, Reed's Ammunition has the Barnes XPD and the Speer Gold Dot in .41 Magnum, and also has .41 Special. I've shot about 100 rounds of the Gold Dot, and am very comfortable with it; the XPD is a great alternative. 41 Magnum - Reed's Ammunition & Research, LLC

For carry, Simply Rugged's Chesty Puller might work; high quality work, and not outrageously priced. Chesty Puller Suspension System

Nice gun patio...

If you would like a pleasant shooting load that duplicates the original 210 grain POLICE load try 8.0 grains of Unique with any jacketed or lead bullet from 200-230 grains.

I've mainly been using the Berry's plated 210 but EXTREME Bullets also has the same one. No smoke, no leading and much less than a jacketed bullet.

If you are looking for a holster try the DeSantis Speed Scabbard...conceals nicely and smooth draw...

Look around and you can find them for about $45.00.

Have I missed something.... Inquired about a 70s vintage NIB nickel 58 that has square bottom standard Magna grips...not PCs... The Shop owner says that the grips are serial numbered to the gun and that more 58s came with square bottom Magnas than PCs...

Thanks.
My question would be why? I've shot more than my share of bullets in .41 at higher velocities than this without any leading.

I am not an expert, but one will be along shortly. I have seen a lot of 58s with standard Magnas. None of them came that way.

I take no offense if someone corrects me. To my knowledge all M58s came with Modified (also known as PC) Magnas.

I have never seen one either... After the second email I sent him I really doubt the grips are numbered to the gun. There is a "NIB" blue one also for sale but it is a "S" prefix with non-diamond Magna grips...when I asked that Seller he checked and no the grips were not numbered to the gun...

Different guns are different & I've scraped my share of leading out of different guns usually .357s. A gas check will eliminate leading 99% of the time & to me that's worth it.

Maybe, you should start casting and learn about bullet allow? IMHO, this is just one of the many reasons bullets deposit lead in the bore.

Default More 58 pics

Here is a couple of pics of a original Tyler T- Grip I picked up for my 58. Nice tight fit and sure makes the grip hold feel better, guess we'll find out how it holds up when I get to shoot it. I'll send my pics and range report as soon as it happens!
