new kit gun info
Hello,
i just got back from the gunshow with my latest addition to the safe. i will start by saying that this is only my 2nd S&W since i am mostly a rifle guy but am getting more interested in pistols, hence this purchase. anyway, i bought a model 34-1 blue with square butt and 4" pinned barrel. it came with the original matching number box, papers, cleaning kit and even the registration card never filled out. it is in really good shape with only blue wear around the muzzle and very little cylinder markings but it does have a very small tight crack on the right stock. it has the diamond shape in the grip. my question concerns the serial number. on the bottom of the butt is a serial number 10397X, however on the swing out in front of the cylinder is another number 2232x along with th letter B and upside down j. it also says in the same area Mod 34-1. my questions are
1 - has this gun had a cylinder swing out arm on it from a different gun?
2 - when was this gun made?
3 - i paid $300 for it. is that about the going price? not that its really important to me. i just like the heck out of it and don't ever plan on selling it. it will be in my coat pocket when i'm squirrel hunting from now on.
i gave it a good cleaning and took it out back and shot a box of shells at various ranges and it shoots pretty good but needs the sites adjusted a little.
i really like this gun and have been looking for one of these kit guns since i read about them some time back. it is a good match to my 586. any info would be really appreciated. thanks.

The 2232x stuff in S&W super secret internal code that they don't even know what it meant back then - my understanding, but I'm about 2 months ahead of you.
You've come to the right place, so welcome aboard. Pictures are always aprreciated as well, so we all learn. Sounds like a winner.
As far mfg others will help.
Price, seems reasonable if it has all those goodies with it. Maybe even a steel.
Looks like they started them in what '36
What's your other one?

heres some pics of "the boys" 34-1 and 586. i bought the 586 in 1982 when i was in the air force. i can shoot it better than any other handgun i have tried. i have others, rugers, h&r and can't hit a barn with them. these smiths are the ticket. next up on the list is a model 29.

Pumpgun,
Welcome to the forum. And so the addiction starts.
$300 for the 34-1 is a great price. I’ve seen them going for $450. Maybe the problem with the Rugers, H&R you’ve tried is that you weren’t aiming at the BROAD side of the barn.

thanks for the info rock doc. i kind of thought it was a good price when i saw it and almost passed on it but then thought better. i'm glad i did. i haven't ever seen another one like this before. i've seen the k-22's, 17's and a model 43 but never one like this with all the stuff included. i think my gun money is going to be spent on s&w's for a while. besides, you can fit more of them in the safe than rifles.

The number on the "swing out" in front of the cylinder is an assembly number just used for keeping parts together during manufacture and assembly. It means nothing after completion.
The 34 is one fine revolver. About the handiest little .22 made. Now look for a K22/Mod 17.

Welcome to the forum Pumpgun. Yes, I agree with rock doc 100%, that is one heck of a deal you got there. They are hard to find in my neck of the woods for under $400. The number on the swing out, or yoke, is an assembly number used during manufacture, and assures that the yoke is matched with the frame. It is always different from the serial #. The serial number is stamped on the bottom of the butt, underneath the barrel above where the ejector rod is, and on the back of the ejector star itself (difficult to see). Your gun is a J frame version and was made sometime between 1960 and 1965. My guess would be 1964. The J frames are a modification of the earlier I and improved I frames. It looks like you may also have the square butt version, which I believe to be less common than the round butt. A very nice gun! Have fun with it.

thanks guys. even to my (currently) uneducated eye i thought that $300 was a good price. heck, i know people who spent a lot more than that going to last nights steelers game. (go steelers). however, i am afraid that finding a bargain on this one will end up costing me money in the long run as i am now somewhat obsessed with these little guns. i'm sure i'm preaching to the choir on this forum. at the same show i saw a really nice model 43 for $695 which i understand is the lightweight version of the 34. i have twin 14 year old boys who share my love of guns and they have really taken to the 34-1. i now will be looking for a K-22 6" (or three) to add to the collection. i am going to order the standard catalog of smith and wesson book today as well so that i can come up to speed on these guns. my collecting to this point has been towards remington rifles but i think i will switch for a bit.
thanks for all the info guys.

Hey there,
I am a Remington Rifle collector also (mostly old pumps) and came down with a serious case of smithwessonitis. Yes, it does cost money to remedy, but I am not sure if I want to be cured. I have 2 39-2's, a K-22 Masterpiece, and a 10-4. They are all well built, classic guns. I am keeping an eye out for a nice model 34....welcome to the forum.

I think $300 for a gun with box and all accessories is a great price. If you like that 586 you will probably love a K-frame 17 (6" and 8 3/8") or 18 (4").

you and me both moose. i collect 14's, 141's, 760's and 7600's, now mostly just the carbine variant. now that i have a decent stash of them i may be selling some of the rifles to fund my s&w habit. i put the old 22 smiths right up there with the old rem pumps for style and quality. not to mention coolness factor.
