Default Is this a fair price for a model 34 .22 kit

I'm wanting to sell my 22 that I've had for about 20 years. Someone has offered me $400 for it but I thought it might be worth a lot more. Is this a fair price???

Model 34-1
Nickle finish
2 barrel
serial number M168xxx

I have the original box, cleaning kit, paperwork it came with and a set of ivory grips. There are no scratches.

Here's the photos I just took:

Alamogirl,

Welcome to the Forum.

I believe that would be low for the gun as you describe and picture it.

That gun was probably produced in 1981 and hasn't been produced since 1991. It is certainly collectable in that condition.

I haven't bought one in some time but I would think that it should bring in the neighborhood of $500. Perhaps some of the .22 collectors who are more current on the values will chime in soon.

Of course they offered you $400. I agree with bettis1. Your Model 34 is worth $500 with the original box, cleaning kit, paperwork & set of ivory grips.

BTW, Welcome to the forum.

If it helps, last year I paid $500 for a 34-1 almost identical to yours, in almost mint condition but without box or papers. $400 is too low IMO.

Default Mod.34-1 Nickel

Not able to advise on the price except $400.00 is not enough and after you sell it you will have sellers remorse and want it back! If you were trying to purchase one of similar condition with all the accessories and second set of stocks you would have to shell out more than $400.00, in my opinion.

I'd break my wrist grabbing that for $400. That condition, it could go to $650 in my neck of the woods.

So I'm understanding that the guy is way underpricing me. Where's the best place to sell a gun? I'm a young female so I really don't just want to walk into my local pawn shop....

You can probably sell it here, but shipping charges will diminish a maximum total somewhat. But you're more likely to get a fair deal and better price overall here.

A popular place to sell guns is at Gunbroker.com. But as NFrameFred said, you can sell it here in the classifieds section. Start high, say around $600 - $650 and see if anyone bites, and reduce from there as time goes on. BTW, we're all friendly here, as opposed to anyplace else.

If you do sell it here, or anyplace else, the buyer will need to give you a Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) dealer to ship it to. From there, it will be legally transferred to the buyer.

By all means, STAY AWAY FROM PAWN SHOPS. They will not give you the best price.

Alamogirl,

If you go to a pawn shop or a gun store and try to sell the gun they will only offer you a small fraction of the value since they want to make the profit. Your best bet will be to find a collector who will pay you as near as possible to it's value.

If, as your name might indicate, you are in Texas (S.A.?) I would suggest going to a large gun show. If you start walking with that box and gun I don't think you will go very far until someone asks to see it. When they ask you what you are asking for it, tell them whatever you believe is your top price (maybe $600). If they hand it back keep walking. If they seem interested, let them make a counter offer. You can then take it or "negotiate" some area in between. If someone makes you an offer that you think is too low, just thank them and keep walking and looking. If you find a legitimate offer, remember who made it and return after touring the show and see if they are really interested.

If you aren't familiar with the gun show culture, please be reassured that you will be welcomed there and the vast majority of folks will be courteous, helpful to you and understanding of your desires.

Unless you are in a hurry for the cash, take your time. Good luck and keep us posted.

Bob

Yea, y'all are all very friendly! I can't tell you how much I appreciate all this information and advice. Someone else told me to just take it into a pawn shop but that just didn't seem very smart.

I'm not very sharp on prices, but it is nickel and it is clean. $500. Then one notices the first picture - box and tools! Then NICE extra grips with medallion. You may have to settle for $600, but I would start at $650. Or keep it. Nice gun!

It's $600 easy. Assume the extra grips are imitation ivory?

Default 650

Ask $650 for the whole package, accept $600. It will sell easily.

alamogirl,

fellow texan here from houston area.

ok you have had it for 20 years so I am guessing with your age in mind you inherited it from a family member. great way to acquire a very nice gun like that. would it be rude to ask why you are wanting to sell in the first place? you don't have to answer but just asking.

all good advice in here so far and yes please don't ask for anything less than 650. that gives you 50 worth of bargaining and I would not take less than 600. I don't care if he/she offers you 575. this is the art of it all. you have a nice gun so don't let it go cheap. and at 650 that is fair and not a gauging price.

I think since you are new to this you should take those pics and post on this site. ...

Texas Gun Trader. Classifieds - Rifles, Shotguns, Pistols, Revolvers, Ammunition

several reasons:

1. you should put in ad that you will only sell ftf.(face to face, meaning in person at a local gun shop) very safe for this type of transaction. go find a local dealer and inform him of what you want to do. there is no charge for this. they accommodate these transactions as a nice gesture to the gun collecting community.

2. advertising on this site is a non threatening way to feel out the market and also get a feel for who you may be dealing with. no pressure on you and you set the guidelines for the sale if you get an offer you can live with.

before you transfer the gun in this manner you will need to satisfy for yourself two requirements.

1. insure that the buyer is a tx resident by checking driver license.

2. ask him if he is legally qualified to purchase a gun in the state of texas.

if both of these check out then you can make the transaction.

lastly I really hate to see anyone have to part with a gun like this. especially someone of your description because it's a great entry gun into shooting and self defense practice if you ever have a desire to arm yourself either at home or on your person as in a carry license. but i realize that's really not my business. just want you to know you have a great gun and hope whatever you decided is the best thing for you.

I hope this helps. good luck and keep us posted.

Alamogirl, I had a gun exactly like yours 2" nickel perfect condition no box, docs or tools and did not get any interest on this forum less than a week ago for a price of $525.00 shipped. The box and tools do add value probably get $600 shipped. IMHO

Default Model 34 "value"

Hello Alamo Girl and welcome!

You have recieved alot of good information here and all of it is accurate.
While I agree that $650 may be the highest end of what you might be able to get for your gun with the benefit of time and knowledge of where to go etc ,

The definition of a "good deal" is one where both you and the buyer are happy.

If you bought your gun 20 years ago paid maybe $200 you might have been happy using something 20 years and earning 100% profit....
Chances are now after hearing you might could get $650 you would not.

Many people walk into a pawnshop with a inherited gun or one they payed $200 for years ago and are happy if they get $200 because they have an emergency and need that cash now,
That is how pawn shops exist.

Yes, you can get more by advertising it If time is on your side but that usually goes for everything.

You may get lucky and find the right buyer walking around a gunshow depending on the buyers that day but that takes time and a certain degree of courage to go to the show, park, pay admission then approach strangers with your gun and even then expect alot of low offers.

If the sale involves shipping out of state (FEDEX) gets their $30?, The sending FFL dealer gets his $40?, the recieving FFL dealer gets his $40? and unless you use free advertising the website gets their % cut too.

While $400 would make for a quick sale on the net $600 may sit unbid on the web for quite a long time if ever.

Suddenly $400 starts to look good to me.

The cardinal rules are a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush and
something is only worth what people are willing to pay for it.

Where you live and how much time and money you are willing to spend to get the gun to the people willing to pay the most directly affects the final selling price and your total profit.

IMHO the easiest most profitable way would be advertising it free here but only in a FTF (face to face) transaction,
Check your local laws on what is legal and what is not in a private sale or you could get in trouble.
Also have a friend present and meet in a safe place like the local PD if you do a FTF.

Again all this is my opinion.
Good Luck with your sale.
PS...My opinion is keep the gun LOL!

A common malady around here. . . a lot of helpful "experts" opine that a gun should sell for a premium price, however, they never seem to be interested in paying that for one . . .

I sold one online like it with box and papers but no extra grips
for 550.00 and the buyer was pleased with it. You could sell the extra grips seperately if someone gets close on your price.
