Default 4" Model 10-6... a sweet shooter

FINALLY had an opportunity to take this Model 10 to the range. I purchased this some time ago from another forum member. Accuracy at ~ 50 feet was outstanding, even given my aging eyes. It is a Model 10-6, pinned with a heavy barrel and was manufactured in 1978. The cylinder has almost no line, and there is absolutely no play with regards to lock up. I limited shooting to standard velocity 38 Special. I'm still a bit concerned as to whether she'll handle +P, but I might run a few rounds through the next time I take her out. The photos were provided by the seller...I'm not any good with a camera...and I just wanted to share.

That is a fine looking 10-6. Mine is a beater (ex-LEO), but solid and a great shooter with a wonderful trigger. Shoot all the +P you want, but save the money and buy more standard velocity. Enjoy.

My son's 10-8 HB, an 85 NYPD issue, was only shot with +p's until he gave it to me. Standard pressure rounds for me though.

Hi,
Great looking 10-6. Reminds me of my 13-2 4 inch. They look alike except for my 13 is a 357 magnum. The 10-6 was the platform for the model 13. A few of the 10-6 revolvers were chambered in 357 magnum used by law enforcement. These were the pre 13s before the actual model 13 came out. Don't worry about shooting +Ps in your 10-6 if you can afford them. They were made to handle +Ps. Plus +P factory ammo has been downgraded by Ammo manufacturers. +P nowadays is really standard 38 special ammo when compared to ammo twenty years ago. In my opinion the only real +P is Buffalo Bores 158gr LSWCHP +P. In a four inch model 10 the velocity is well over 1100 fps. I use this round in my model 10 heavy barrel just like your model 10-6. I have had zero problems. Its a strout round but I like it.
Here is the two revolvers I use the Buffalo Bore the most.
Again great revolver.

I have a nickel 4" 10-6 and it is easily my most accurate, fun to shoot 38 spl. +Ps will be no problem at all for your gun. Enjoy it!

That's a really attractive Model 10 Heavy Barrel. Ought to shoot really well. They are always pleasant to use at the range and make great sense for serious self defense. Model 10-6s shrug off +P factory loads and are very kind to the shooter when fired with such loads.

My first handgun and favorite old beater is a Model 10-6 that was produced in 1971. Hard to believe it ever looked like yours. Here are the two best 5-shot groups fired from 10 yards, out of a bunch of groups fired during a recent afternoon of trying my best with it in single action mode.

It's fired a pile of +P in the last 35 years or so with nary a problem.

Hello. Like so many others here, the Model 10 4" HB may be a "plain vanilla" revolver, but it is one that just has that special something I find difficult to put into words, but I'll try.

I trust the thing and for my eye, POA has almost always matched POI at most (sane) distances and for me, these revolvers just feel right. Loaded with Remington 158-gr. LHP +P, it is my opinion that in capable hands, they can defend hearth and home quite satisfactorily. In fact, one of my Model 10's (a Model 10-6 that I bought used) is on constant "house duty".

My primary "house gun" is this Model 10-6 set up for DAO. It was finished with something called "Z-Coat" before I bought it. I've shot the thing quite a bit and trust it. It is loaded with Remington's 158-gr. LHP +P, which chronographs right at 900 ft/sec from this gun.

My first duty gun as a fledgling officer was a Model 10-6.

As can others here, I recall when these old service guns were common as the proverbial "hen's teeth". Sure wish that was the case now...

I hope that the OP enjoys his Model 10 for years to come. Somehow, I don't think he'll be disappointed.

Best to all.

Mine is an ex-state police gun, cosmetically challenged but very solid and accurate. +P ammo is safe to shoot with a Model 10.

I like to see that you all have used +P in you M-10's w/o issues.I have been a little nervous about trying to shoot some in mine. it is a 68 model and was worried b/c of its age.Everyone has pics of theirs so ill put one up of mine. I painted the front sight red for quicker targer aquisition.

I have a former NYPD 10-6 from 1967 that is my favorite shooter. Finish is a little rough as would be expected but I didn't buy it for looks. While all I've shot have been reloads I would not worry about +P in a 10-6. I use the traditional 5.0 gn of Unique and 3.5 gn of BE under a 158gn bullet loading.

The Model 10 is a great gun and I favor the K Frame .38 over all my other guns. I can't decide which is my favorite, though - maybe the 5 inch version. It's just hard to pick between the Model 10, 14, and 15.

Just got back to the PC. Thank you all, for the comments and photos of other Model 10's. Over 30 + years, I've bought and sold a variety of handguns, but at this point in my life I have come to believe the Model 10 is simplicity and perfection all in the same package. Others may not agree, and that's okay....

to jmathis84... one photo shows the Stock grips that are serial numbered to the gun... the other shows a set of Eagle Secret Service grips in Rosewood... included in the purchase was a Tyler T Grip that goes with the Stock grips.

I have several grips for this Model 10.... but today arthritis interferes with good gripping when use I wood grips...I currently have some Uncle Mike's rubber on this for now....makes it less painful....wish I had found this Model 10 years ago, before Mother Nature began taking her toll on the fingers.... but....oh well...

To everyone else.. enjoy the younger years....

I've come to the same conclusion over the same period of time. There was a time when I couldn't have cared less for any .38 Special. How things change...

Only have one 10-6 but it sure is SMOOTH. The front sight is also a bit worn down so it shoots 110 grainers dead on. I still have some +P+ Treasury Loads and it doesn't mind them a bit. A bit barky, though.

I've been fooling around with my Dad's old 10-6. He bought it in the 70's and I "borrowed" it. Didn't shoot it much until this past year when he passed away. Somehow shooting his guns make me feel good these days.

I put the Tyler T on it, might go back to the blue one.

I think I'm the only person on the Forum who loathes the T-Grip's appearance. It makes my Model 10 Heavy Barrel even uglier than it already is from wear. It sure does improve its handling characteristics though.

I don't like the appearance of the T-grip either, but from a functional standpoint I think it is a good product.
I prefer Eagle Classic stocks over the T-grip on a K-frame though.

I like the T grip. Been looking all over for one w/o having to wait forever from the factory. The eagle stocks are nice. I like the finger grooves in them. Just about all my stocks on my guns have finger grooves of some sort or another.

Eagle definitely makes some nice stocks. Mine are the smooth target grips without finger grooves which work great for me. For some reason I can't find a set of stocks with grooves that fits my hand quite right.
There is definitely a long wait on T-grips from the factory (I think it was 18 weeks on mine), but they are so worth it once you get them. Not pretty, but very functional.
