Default Model 19 Texas Ranger

Have a couple questions about the Texas Ranger commemorative edition. From what I have been able to find I believe that it is a 19-3 and that some were made with a matching knife and presentation box and some were just by themselves. Is this correct? We have had it for probably 15 years at least and I am almost positive that it has not been shot since we have had it. It is in excellent condition as far as I can tell. I would like to start shooting it but want to know if that would decrease its value a lot. I am not looking to sell it but since it is a special edition I don't want to mess it up alot when I could just buy a regular one. Is there anything else I should know about it? I don't know a lot about S&W revolvers.

Sorry for the pics took them with my phone

It will decrease it's value somewhat, but they usually don't bring much more than standard models.
Commemorative collectors are few and far between. Almost all commemoratives are never shot to save any extra collector value. Once you shoot one it just falls into the 19-3 catagory with the rest. Then you would have to find person who didn't mind having a Texas logo on it, if you were ever to sell.

It is probably worth about $2-300 more unfired than used, due to the collector status issue. Purely a personal decision as to shooting it or not, but you could sell it and buy a used model 19 and pocket the difference.

I recently sold an unfired Texas Ranger with all the boxes and paper for $525 and glad to get that. It really didn't sell for any more than a regular 19-3. No one would buy it since they "couldn't" shoot it. I would recommend shooting it and enjoying it.

They made 8000 with matching knife and 2000 without knife. The 2000 without knife are in the 4XXX and 9XXX serial number range. If you don't have the case and knife (if it came with one) you'll never sell it to a commemorative collector.

Thanks everybody. I'm not sure what the s/n is I'll have to check but I think I'll start shooting it since it isn't worth that much more and I'm not planning on selling it. I've heard that the model 19 is a sweet shooter looking forward to finding out

It has been my experience that a so called "collectible" ( marked guns ) guns have actually sold for LESS than the standard models have. If I had to guess as to why, I would say that in the state of Texas, a Texas Ranger gun may be desirable, but in Nebraska, Ohio, or Alabama, no one would much care. In fact, other than a Texas Ranger or a collector of LEO guns, most people would rather have a standard "unmarked" version. If you can sell it for some big bucks and buy a standard model, then go for it! If not, just shoot it and enjoy it. That's my .02 cents........

With the box sellers seem to want in the $150 range for the knife. Actual sales have typically been in the $75 to $100 range.

The Ranger Bowie was the first knife S&W made and that was in 1973. The fact that it was the first makes it a bit desirable to some collectors.

Shoot it! What's not to like about a Model 19 with 3 T's, red-ramp, white-outline, and smooth grips????? I don't own collector guns, I shoot them all. That's the fun of owning them, in my opinion. Bill
