Default S&W Highway Patrolman

My neighbor has passed away and I told his widow that I would sell his guns for her. I would like to get an idea of the value of a S&W Highway Patrolman with a 6" barrel and replacement wooden grips. It is in very good - excellent condition. Thanks.

If you are speaking of a non model marked HP it could easily bring $600 or more if the condition is in the 90 % or better range with orig box and tools. Any chance of photos? Of course your location will have a bit to do with it. Kyle

$400 to $450 is a reasonable price unless it has box, tools and papers, but these days a lot of folks are attempting to ask more (some a LOT more ) and some are apparently getting it.

Some will say the base price of a 95% or better 28 w/original grips has crept up to the $500 range. Not for many of us. In the last two years I have paid less and I have paid more, but for the "more" it was a 5 screw "S" numbered gun in prime condition. The "less" was over $150 less for a shooter with a worn finish.

Most any 28 in fair cosmetic condition and good mechanical condition should bring $400 these days. More than that, well, a lot of folks are convinced they will keep climbing in value. Buit the market overall is "soft" right now. I see people asking more, but I also see a lot of them sitting at those prices. YMMV.

All great answers so far and it all depends on condition and what version it is. If it's none model marked on the crane it's worth more and if it's a 4 or 5 screw it's also worth more. If it's a 28-2 with 6 inch barrel then I think if it's a 95% condition revolver it's worth $400 to $450 depending on where you live and the demand. Most S&W people will also ask for a discount on the price for the none S&W grips.

The model 28-3 Highway Patrolman was made from 1982-86 and has the less-desireable non-pinned barrel and non-recessed cylinder. Priced around $450.

The 28-2 was made fom 1961-81 and is the most common version found. Prices range from $400 - $550.

The 28-1 was only made in 1960 and would certainly command a premium. The entire Forum would LOVE to see one.

The 28 was made from 1957-59. $550 - $650

The non-model marked Highway Patrolman was made from 1954-56. I estimate $600 - $750

Prices will vary depending on condition, presence of original box/grips, location, barrel length, etc. A 4" barrel seems to be preferred over a 6", but be on the lookout for an 8 3/8" barrel (fewer than 100 made). Also, a pair of "Coke bottle" grips can be worth hundreds themselves, although not original to the model 28.

Dates per the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson 3rd edition, page 196-197. Other members please revise my $ numbers if they seem out of whack.

Default Highway Patrolman

The Highway Patrolman is the 28-2, the common one without box, so the $400 to $450 range would be the place I'll start. In looking at it more, I thinking that it just might join the 4" Highway Patrolman I already have in my safe.

I appreciate the replies as they helped me get some idea of it correct value.

If you are interested in the 6" joining your 4" I would offer her $450 out of respect. It is always good when you are able to help a neighbor in need.
