Question Trigger not smooth on M66

I'm looking at a Model 66 no dash as mentioned in an older thread that no longer is getting attention, so I decided to start a new one to ask another question about the gun.

There is a click at about quarter travel of the trigger. It is not the click when the timing detente pops up and hits the cylinder. (I can see that is what happens in my 67.) This is something that you more feel than hear. I went back and looked at it again yesterday, and one of the guys working the counter and a customer that was a regular both thought it might be something with the sear. I've seen this word on the forum, but I don't know what it is other than it's related to the trigger and hammer. Unfortunately the owner/decision-maker was not there to ask about a price break because I suppose it will have to be looked at by a gunsmith, so I'll probably go back today to see the owner. Is this a deal breaker?

One other thing I noticed that I had missed previously was that the front sight had been changed. It looks like the red plastic was removed from the ramp and a black, notched sight had been inserted in that space. One of the guys referred to it as an elevated sight, I guess because it stood proud of the ramp. Any opinions on that?

I'm not sure about the sear issue or if the the problem is even related to the sear. I never have had the side plate off of a S&W revolver but there are many up here that have worked on their revolvers that can answer your question.

On the sight issue a lot of shooters have changed out the red ramp insert for a different color insert with black and yellow being popular colors. On my Model 66 the rear sight has had the v notch part of the sight changed out by the previous owner to a black with white out line version. I like it better that way and it's a shooter so I wasn't worried about any loss of value.

I don't remember your original post but I would ask the owner for a reduction in price if you really want the revolver or I'd walk away and look for a different Model 66. I say this because if your mind has already decided there maybe something wrong with the revolver you will always have that sitting in your mind. If the gun shop has an indoor range you might ask permisson to fire the revolver to convince yourself that all is well with it. I say this because on a used gun once it's sold they rarely ever will take them back.

sounds like a lot of trouble for model 66, if it were me I'd let this one pass and hold out for one without issues.

This sounds like sear "click" and is likely caused by incorrect angle or length on the bottom of the sear. It should be easy for an Armorer to repair.

I just bought a really extra-clean M19 4" that exhibits this behavior exactly as described. Is it OK to fire the gun or will that cause accelerated wear or any other damage?

Have an Armorer look at it. Again, it is not going to cause damage but it needs to be fixed so you can enjoy shooting your S & W.

It was the sear, and the gunsmith fixed in a short time. I dropped it off at 10am and picked it up at 2:30pm. The trigger is nice and smooth now. $45 total, and well worth it.
