I just got the 63 no dash I won on Gunbroker a week ago. One thing I was wondering about, is the serial number on the stocks are one number off. Could this be a factory goof? The last digit is a 4 on the stocks and the gun is a 3, the rest are the same.

Also, could someone give me a rough born-on date? The serial number is M160xxx.

Your gun was shipped in 1981.
One number off on the stocks is not uncommon, probably a factory goof. I wouldn't worry about. Doesn't make it any better or worse gun.

I have a 1982 model 63 and the numbers on the stocks are off by one and there is a pencil mark drawn through the incorrect # with the correct number pencilled in right above it. My serial # is M182xxx. Sounds like the guy in charge of numbering the stocks to the gun that year in the Model 63 line wasn't too bright

Even though we got a ton of snow last night which is now melting into mud, I couldn't resist taking it out in the desert and get acquinted with it. I went through about 60 quick rounds and was impressed with the accuracy at some cans. Fun little shooter for sure. The magna grips were a bit awkward when I squeezed the trigger, so I will most likely find some targets or combat type for when I take it out.

I mainly bought this to blow through a bunch of ammo without busting the bank and being rough on the hand like my K frames are. It will be a much appreciated addition to my small collection.

Another thing I wanted to ask. Is it normal to have the number on the grips only on one side? Also, Cajun, they didn't bother correcting the mistake on mine.

I don't either. I see them as a tool I can have fun with during the day and fondle in the evening, all 4 that I own! But the wife is starting to show hints of jealousy.

Mine is 5 digits off M1591xx. Weird.

Mine, which came with it's original RB magnas as far as I can tell, doesn't have a serial number stamped or written on either grip.....it probably shipped in the early 90's though, so that may have some kind of bearing on whether or not the grips would of been numbered to the guns at all.

If your 63 was bought as a shooter then the serial number probably only matters to you. Enjoy it and shoot it every chance you get they just get smoother and better with use.
As for the comment about union employees goes,I don't know if Smith employees are union or not but to imply that is why the stocks are misnumbered is just plain ignorant!!
