I'm thinking of selling a 66-1 I recently picked up. I fear it's just too big. Thinking of selling and reinvesting in a smaller S&W revolver or maybe even an M&P. Can anyone tell me what they think this is worth. Many thanks in advance:


Smith and Wesson model 66-1, K frame .357 revolver with a 6 inch barrel. Here's what the previous seller told me:

I bought this stainless steel, six-shot, S&W revolver new in mid 1980 and have owned it ever since. The serial number is 58K18**. It was used very little, approximately 120 rounds of .38 Special were fired. It is in excellent condition, with the only visible wear being a couple of minor scuffs on the grips, which are the original checkered wood grips with S&W medallions. It locks up tight, indexes correctly, and has a very smooth trigger. It has a pinned barrel and recessed cylinder chambers. It has a grooved target hammer and trigger.

Since I've had it I put about 10 rounds through it at the range and cleaned it up.

I love the aftermarket Millet rear sight.

OK, Since I bought one recently I will shoot... The prices for these have a bit of swing these days. I know of a person or two that got this model for $450 ftf within the last year. I did not have any such luck, and paid $600 for as new, all original, with original box, screwdriver and papers. My estimation is you could get between $500 and $550. Maybe $600 id you have box and stuff. Some would argue less, maybe $450, but if you check the last few sold on the forum, that would make for a very lucky buyer.

Thanks for the reply. Certainly appreciated. If anyone has a comparable revolver in a shorter barrel I'd be interested on a straight up trade.

I paid $380 for this at the end of 2009. I don't know if that's really a typical price. I just knew I couldn't pass it up.

Even with the after market Millet rear sight around here it sell for $500 to $550 and wouldn't sit very long before it was sold.

As I mentioned in the post, the reason for trading: Primarily looking for a similar revolver in the 3-4" barrel range. I'm looking to trade because I picked up this revolver for backcountry use. It's manageable, but a little difficult to carry in a place that's easily accessible when carrying a pack, hunting, etc. Hence the hope for a shorter barrel.
