Default Holster Rig

Xfuzz, I guess I will be the one to ask-who is the maker of that holster rig ? Very nice, very traditional looking- looks like something I really, really need. Thanks for sharing.

Thumbs up

Basketweave & bone.

Nothing classier than a S&W in good leather and a fixed blade knife.

It's so much better lookin' than a Glock in a Fobus holster and a Spyderco!

Thumbs up Xfuzz, that is too pretty to carry in the woods!

That 19 with those stocks, and the Buck with that handle, are beautiful. I would not expose the gun or holster to the ****** conditions of these Ozark hills. I have two different rigs for summer and winter. Both have seen the blackberry bushes and snag weeds. In the winter I carry that 65 in a gun mate nylon holster and put the Grippers on. I love my targets and Alessi belt slide, but don't want to trash them. The 37 and the Brauer Bros.
are my mushroom hunting and general all around friend in the woods. It loves shot shells, snakes don't. The knife with the 37 is an Ontario pilots knife.
The knife I carry in the winter is my grandfathers MSA cutlery co. with a 6" blade. It holds it's edge better than my buck, plus it will clean a deer and still have a good edge.
I know this equipment looks rough, but it has served me well in the woods for many years. These woods are far too rough for a beautiful rig like yours. If I owned your rig I would only wear it to church or weddings or whatever. That 19 is 'bout as nice an example of S&W hardware I've seen.
Stay out of the briers please
Peace,
gordon

XFUZZ, nice looking outfit. I have been been a collector of classic guns, leather and knives for many years. I am not a Buck knife collecter but am unaware of them ever building this model with a bone handle. Could you post some close ups of the handle for us. Thanks

Good looking setup.

I'm not as nice to mine. Been dragging this one around since the early 80's.

I like this one a lot also, a Ruger 45 Colt and Randall,

The nice rig is the Bianchi No. 2(?) BHL. May be Model 10. I can't find my old Bianchi catalogs. The model # is on the back. I have one in black with the thumb- break strap, Model 5 BHL, with their River Belt. I do really like their and Safariland's older leather like this.

The Buck No. 105 Pathfinder knife may be of recent production with a white Micarta handle. Their Custom Shop puts together some nice knives. If it is an original white production handle it's a more fragile substance that sometimes cracked in extreme cold. Buck discontinued it in the early to mid 1960's, and the knife is very collectible if one of those. Subtle blade and spacer details make me think this is one of those older knives.

Contact, Knife World and ask to buy the issue that they published about those white Buck handles, within the last year, I think. (Look up the publication; I'm afraid to post addresses here now.) I'm not really a collector, so didn't keep my copy.

The knife that one poster calls a MSA may be a Marble's? (Marble's Small Arms?) Those, too, are collectible. But if it gives joy in use, use it!

That Bianchi setup is about my idea of a good woods outfit, although I prefer my Combat Magnum in stainless, Model 66. If reasonable care is used, nice leather doesn't get beaten up too badly, although one man's account of briars has to be considered. Where legal, a jacket helps to cover the gunbelt.

This is a good topic, with some of the most practical woods rigs yet. The mid-frame .357 is a good choice when you don't know what may arise. If grizzlies are present, I think I'd wear a M-629 with six-inch barrel and the same basic Bianchi holster. But I know of one grizzly dropped dead by an M-66 and 158 grain .357's. I think that one was heart-shot as it tried to maul a game warden. There were several official witnesses and a magazine editor present. The warden survived. Actually, I don't think he was roughed up much before he got in the killing shot.

Texas,
Spot on regarding the rig... Bianchi number 10.
The Buck blade was just received and I do not think the
handles are micarta...they are more "glass" like.
I may re-think it's use if it is somewhat scare...I was told
they were hard to locate.
No bears in my roamin area.
My lease is 10 sections of piney woods/timber land with many old loggin trails.
357 will do.

Great thread. I am currently in the process of putting together just such a rig for mountain cruising and woods loafing out here in the Rockies. Up until now I have used several different combinations but want to settle on a single "go-to" outfit.

I subscribe to the "honest use" philosophy: Put together good quality tools/accessories and use them as needed. Honest use and good care will show over time but it only adds character.

It looks to me like Malamute embraces the honest use approach, too. The rig in the OP is terrific and I would use it as needed if it were mine.

Each time this topic is discussed,a lot of nice lookin' rigs are shown. I just WISH I could find a 29 that looks like Malamute's for sale. I'd buy it in a heartbeat!

Yeah, the MSA in my picture is used every deer season. I know it is a collectible, but it works. I watched my dad use it to cut bone by placing it on the bone and whacking it with a hammer. I have done the same thing cutting catfish heads off. I will use it till I can't hunt any more then give it to my son. The back of the blade near the hilt is bradded slightly. Hey, I didn't do it.
Peace,
gordon. nice rigs guys!!!

Note/Update on Buck Knife.

Found on the web that it is a 1987 mfg not a 60's
vintage.

It goes to work...
