Default Model 37 Serial number Question?

A friend picked up a Model 37, 2" Square Butt on Saturday. Like new with " A Box"(not THE box).
How much? Well trades get confusing. But I have traded guns my friend before. He may look like Santa, but take my word for it, HE AIN'T. Anyway, my friend's happy. The other guy,,, He may think the same thing, but I don't think so.
OK here's the question. The serial # makes no sense. There is nothing anywhere close in the book.
"""230J8X""""
The stocks are marked, ' 230 8X' (230(space)8X)
Confusing, isn't it? The gun has to be '66-'80 vintage. Pinned barrel, Magna Square Butt stocks. I will try to post pics later.
Ideas anyone?

Yep, makes no sense. Does the model have a dash (ie...37-1) or is it a straight model 37? Any sign of unusual features to indicate a custom job or limited edition? My square butt 37 is 649XXX which puts it in the late '60s.

Marked "MOD.37". Just a standard Airweight. Factory finish, like new and appears unfired. The mystery continues.

Default Clear as mud!

It appears you boys are a little confussed! Understand, when you ask for a serial number of a J frame, all the J frames are numbered in the same series. In 1968 our goverment enact the Gun Control Act of 1968, for our protection! This is part of the confussion of the J frames. In 1950 they started the J frame numbering system at #1 until 1969 when they changed to J1xxxx and continued thru 1Jxxxx, 10Jxxx, 100Jxx, until they reached 994J94 in 1973. They then changed to J100,000.
pilgrim, I would estimate your gun to be sometime in the early 1970s. The number stamped in the right grip indicates the grips are original to the gun.

jcelect, Thanks for the info. If someone beats me over the head long enough it sinks in to my little brain. Now I see it in the Book.
It was a good excuse to post pics of a nice Airweight though.
