I have my fathers model 36 and I am trying to date the revolver as well as get an idea on a good estimate value.

Model 36 38 special

Serial on the butt - 7J86XX

Can anyone help???

SCSW is not very helpful here. It shows "1983 1J18601-xxxx," nothing further. One of the collector folks will certainly know more.

With 5 numbers, not 6, plus the 'floating J', I'm thinking your gun is in the 1971-72 timeframe. But I advise waiting for verification from one of the true experts.

I am sure it is before 1976 that is when he became a police officer.

Per SCSW: 1971-1972 J1 - 999J9
Rule of thumb: four or five digit floating j = 1971-72, six digit floating j = 1982-83.
